Andrew Jackson Jihad renamed

2016-02-24 by judasgoat | 246 Comments
Folk punk band Andrew Jackson Jihad are changing their name officially to the abbreviated AJJ.
In a posting on the group's Facebook page (still bearing the old name as of this writing) the band elaborated on their choice:

"The two biggest reasons for this are:
1.) We are not Muslims, and as such, it is disrespectful and irresponsible for us to use the word jihad in our band's name.
2.) We no longer wish to be a living reminder of president Andrew Jackson. Interesting historical figure as he was, he was an odious person and our fascination with him has grown stale."

The full statement can be read here: https://www.facebook.com/ajjtheband/videos/1093989677300088/

The statement is accompanied with a video for a new song, "Now That I'm at the Top of My Game", which can also be viewed at the post above.

The band is working on a new album in Dallas with producer John Congleton.

they don't want to be associated with Andrew Jackson, but they're keeping the same initials. if we all know what AJJ stands for then they're not really changing the name. i guess they don't want people to completely forget who they were/start from scratch? idk, just seems like you might as well use a brand new name

Okay, listen, fellow non-Muslims. Whatever you think jihad means, it doesn't. We'll probably never fully comprehend its meaning no matter how hard we try--and it's clear from some of y'all's comments that you don't intend on trying at all. There are plenty of Muslim people who feel actively dehumanized whenever non-Muslim people use it in whatever context without grasping its cultural importance (one of them is a close friend of mine who hates this band for that very reason). And juxtaposing the word with a genocidal white American president just adds insult to injury. The band isn't changing their name to serve some abstract, intangible idea of "political correctness", they're doing it because their old name hurt people.

And honestly I'm getting pretty fucking sick of this prevailing idea that punk or comedy or whatever needs to piss everyone off indiscriminately or else it's lost its spine. Wild idea, but what if political art is most effective when it deliberately and carefully targets its anger or ridicule at systems of power, and *GASP* tries to right things when it inadvertently hurts people who already deal with enough bullshit from the rest of the world?

@hesperus cmon dude. It's just absurd to think the usage of the word "Jihad" in a band name is liable and responsible for dehumanizing, discriminating and/or discrediting moderate Muslims in any meaningful way. Of those same Muslims like your friend who feel like the term is getting hijacked by a bunch of white guys playing indie punk, well they should really redirect their efforts and attentions to redefining the term from the religious conservatives who use it as a name for waging war against infidels. But even then they have to perform historical and theological acrobatics, because the term is unapologetically used in the Ko'ran and the Ha'dith in exactly that sense, ad-nauseum. And it even more absurd to make the argument that non-devout Muslims can't possibly understand the term Jihad in any real sense because it's an infinitely interchangeable, intangible, abstract concept.
Overall, your friend and any other Muslim who has similar feelings on this are losing perspective if they are getting offended and defensive over a problem which is not given immense impetus by white people, but by their own religious fundamentalist sects. And to be clear I don't mean this in a "collective blame/punishment" sort of sense, only that there is a steady stream of people like yourself who are more quick to put the blame on the Andrew Jackson Jihad for perpetuating a problem of which 99% of the energy is given to by the fundamentals of Wahhabi Sunni Islam itself.

They retweeted something like "only white irreligious dude bros don't like the name change". Err isn't folk punk pretty much the epitome of whiteness? Oh I forgot, you can vilify anything by relating it to the opinion of that old boogeyman the white male.

I don't think most people really care that much. I just think it's pretty tacky for a band to go by an abbreviation, especially after I had called them by the same name for about half a decade.

No, it's not that. I mean, PC gone mad would actually be them censoring and changing everything, like refusing to play "Be Afraid of Jesus" because of "I had a dream tonight that I cut off a piece of the baby Jesus to offend my friends"

it's natural for listeners to be bugged or even upset when they revert and/or hide a part of their namesake. A band that is not very politically correct to begin with is likely going to get backlash when they make a decision like that, it's just inevitable. It's literally as if the Dead Kennedys changed their name because they didn't want to insult the further generations of the president.

Was it really offensive to begin with? Sure, I always their name was a bit quirky, but never offensive, which is why I don't get the decision to begin with. I always thought that their name was a dig at Andrew Jackson in the first place, saying how his actions were a "jihad" against the Native Americans. Besides, it's not as if the word "jihad" is offensive to begin with - it just means "struggle" in Arabic, and its usage never was problematic to begin with. I disagree with Viet Cong's decision to change their name, but at least they had people who felt extremely publically uncomfortable with it.

I dont think thats the point. People found it offensive, and thats fine. Youre entitled to feel that way. But this PC culture we live in gives in to the demands of whiners who are so sensitive that they wouldnt even let a band play because of their name (talking about viet cong). Now, in andrew jackson jihads case, idk if they were pressured into it or not. But if they werent, thats even worse. Theyre perpetuating and enabling PC culture by giving in to crybabies who think they should never have to go through the horrors of being offended. And in viet congs case, they were forcibly censored because of their name. That is not ok.

Ever thought some muslims on the other side of the world do possess systemic power? Or do you have some convenient SJW definition like "system of power = white people + America/Europe." Check out the Iranian metal band Confess. They are under arrest and might be put to death for "insulting the prophet." They can't even fight the man themselves, which happens to be using extremist jihad. I still don't see the problem though. Yeah, it's what they've been identified as, and changing the name isn't going to make people forget the old name, especially the way they're going about it.

But people change as they get older, and being edgy for the sake of being edgy is just silly. There's no winning situation here. Either they themselves are unhappy continuing on with the name so they change it to satisfy themselves and get shit on for being "pc pussies," or they go on with the name being unhappy with something they no longer think is cool, funny, edgy, or something they just no longer identify with.

Made the mistake of wearing a shirt of theirs in public once or twice and ended up explaining the name to way too many people at once. I understand controversial names are used to spur greater conversations, but people's ignorance is a bit exhausting. And even for those who don't care for the name (anywhere from bonafide offended to "really, dude?"), I get that. I was personally not offended, but taking steps to possibly offend fewer people, regardless of motive, isn't really a bad thing.

For Viet Cong they changed their name because they did feel like it was very offensive for the connotation it carried (though apparently it was just because they couldnt land festivals with the name) but for these fellas it couldve just been for themselves and literally no one else.

It's wrong to conflate changing the name as a pure reaction from political correctness, like Parallel said;
"I mean, PC gone mad would actually be them censoring and changing everything, like refusing to play "Be Afraid of Jesus" because of "I had a dream tonight that I cut off a piece of the baby Jesus to offend my friends""

But at least some element of political correctness is in the equation and let's face it, political correctness is as infuriating to see tickling the feet of any entertainment medium as any pissfuck concept but hey w/e just go home and have a beer.

So they don't want to be associated with Andrew Jackson, who all in all was a pretty decent president but is one of the latest victims to the "lets focus on what a historical figure did that is not okay by today's standards, rabble rabble." Ok.

Yep most muslims disagree with this. However due to the ignorance of the general public and false extreme stereotypes of Muslims the general public is likely to associate Jihad with all muslims because of extremists and so that change saves the inevitable controversy the name could cause.

Why is that? I can agree that using such language as "faggot" and "pussy" is childish, but personally I have no problem with anyone calling out this decision for what it is - needlessly apologetic. I could care less what the band calls themselves. What bothers me is that they let the possibility of offending a religious group - a group by the way, whose beliefs go largely under-criticized by leftists - dictate their actions.

'I could care less what the band calls themselves. What bothers me is that they let the possibility of offending a religious group - a group by the way, whose beliefs go largely under-criticized by leftists - dictate their actions.
'

so firstly you say you could care less (i believe you mean couldn't) what the band calls itself, but you are getting all butthurt that they have for the 'wrong' reasons, even though you say you don't care. secondly, you lump over a billion people from all far corners of the earth and many different backgrounds into 'a group' as if they were some hivemind little congregation who all believe exactly the same things across the board, which is pretty ignorant. thirdly you make the incorrect assumption that leftists do not criticise using islamic texts as law or questioning islamic beliefs, which we do, we just have the decency and insight to realise one billion people aren't the same and the average muslim isn't planning to blow up your town hall. finally, you say that 'the band are letting muslims dictate their actions' when no muslim has visibly objected and the band have said that they made this choice themselves because they no longer want to be known that way. so all in all, learn to read and don't jump to ignorant conclusions

Sinternet
February 25th 2016

'@sinternet theres a great example in this thread: viet cong being forced to change their name because they couldnt play shows.'

i can't remember the exact reasons behind their name change so I could be wrong, but i would imagine that considering most left-wing interpretations of the Vietnam war paint the Viet Cong as the 'good' guys, wouldn't the reaction come from more right-wing beliefs that they were 'evil commies' and a threat to America and so the band was glorifying them?

Qorx
February 25th 2016

First off thanks for correcting my grammar. Secondly, ultimately I don't care what the band calls themself. In the long run it doesnt effect me. Thirdly, I never lumped together every single Muslim together. But the Quran says some fucked up shit, that's a fact. That doesn't mean EVERY Muslim is bad, but Islam itself is irrational bullshit that completely deserves criticism. My main issur is that, when people do so, people like you step in with your "Not All Muslims" bullshit. NOBODY except extreme right wingers
is saying ALL Muslims engage in such behavior. So it becomes irritating whenever the focus shifts away from legitimately criticizing and trying to do away with bullshit ideas. I know not all Muslims are evil, I'm just sick of people defending such nonsense.

Friday13th

Sinternet, being "butthurt" is no the point. Read what the band said. Is what they said logical and are the ideas defensible? "We are not Muslims, and as such, it is disrespectful and irresponsible for us to use the word jihad in our band's name."
How many words would we have to stop using in order to be "responsible" given this faulty logic? Every word that was coined by a religious group if we're actually being fair. Using a word with a completely different context is "disrespectful?" How so? If I say "gun" does it make you instinctively wanna shoot someone? Why would saying "Jihad" hurt anyone? It's inconsistent and absurd.

Now obviously I'm playing devil's advocate here, but they've changed their sound from folk-punk to a more mainstream "indie" one, so perhaps the name change has nothing to do with "offending Muslims" and simply the fact that "Andrew Jackson Jihad" sounds too wacky to appeal to a larger audience, while "AJJ" works just fine for that purpose. The guise of political correctness would warp it into that they changed it for sensitivity, not because they were selling out.

i wouldnt say their reason is dumb at all. reading their statement right now and all it said was it's disrespectful and irresponsible. they didn't even say that only muslims can use that word. but, as a muslim myself i'm not particularly fussed about the word being used, not because it's not wrong but because its meaning has been grossly misconstrued in the westdecades ago...it's basically a meme now so it's w/e

@Keyblade okay you're right about it not having to do with freedom of speech. Most people assume if it has to do with pc it's also infringing free speech. But think about the statements made by the band. Saying something is "irresponsible" and disrespectful" under the condition of not being a part of that religion is something in line with pc culture. We need to reject these rigid social rules and start looking at the motives of people. Sensible people are offended not by words but by the motives behind them. No group should have a monopoly on a set of words. But pc culture will tell you it's "cultural appropriation" and it's bad and our lives must continue to be segregated.

you're right people need to look at the intention but some people are going to be offended regardless, unfortunately not everyone can look at these things in a nuanced manner. it's simply being considerate to choose to not offend those people

honestly it should be lauded if anything. why is 'pc culture' considered so insidious? this is literally a band who made a decision of their own free will, not coerced in any way on their own name. even if the reasons are completely illogical and stupid...so? it's such a non-issue, and i find this backlash completely baffling. well not really cuz i know where it's coming from but still. completely ridiculous

I wasn't offended by the old name, and I don't really care that they changed it. What really baffles me is how such a small thing can be such a big deal to some people.

'Pc culture' seems to be a catch-all term nowadays for anything that doesn't personally benefit whoever says it

I love how people are giving AJJ shit for compromising to avoid offending people, while theyre getting more upset about their name than anyone else on this entire planet. lol.

i wonder what their reaction would be if ajj rescinded their change in an effort to appease them lmao

I feel like a lot of the people complaining that this isn't very punk of them has a shitty concept of what punk is. Most of the punks that I know here in the UK are left wing, so I really don't see a conflict with them doing what they're doing.

lol so let me get this straight. they're changing their name to ajj, which is an abbreviation for andrew jackson jihad, because they think it's offensive to muslims and they don't want any association with andrew jackson... but the name is still the same, just abbreviated.

besides the fact that the name is basically the same thing anyways and people have been using the ajj abbreviation for years, this is pretty stupid. it's offensive to use the word jihad in a band title? this is the kind of conformist, rearguard-defenses that people feel obligated to because of ultra-liberal pc advocates. everything is fucking racist these days

A lot of things are racist; evening in general terms, "most things" is a bit of an exaggeration. That said, it depends on where you live, and perhaps your reality is far different to mine.

But the term "Jihad" isn't racist, and the name change isn't "wrong" as much as it is incredibly odd. For a band that's name was designed to be offensive, and whose music sometimes relies on being offensive, it doesn't make too much sense and is likely indicative of changes to their lyrical content. Which isn't too important or a big deal, but it's why it's gotten so much backlash. And why I wouldn't be too surprised for them to reveal this as a joke.

"(among Muslims) a war or struggle against unbelievers."
"ISLAM
the spiritual struggle within oneself against sin."
