I admire the desire to reward the paying fans immediately, but given that the album was uploaded within about ten minutes of this offer you kind of have to wonder if it was the smartest way to go about it
| | | true. albums invariably get uploaded eventually though. a full stream would have been a good idea.
| | | thank you deathwish
| | | really can't wait to see the artwork on the vinyl
| | | Deathwish is always on top of their shit. Always try to support the albums I check out and love. Plus they have great vinyl colors.
| | | and the album is actually really good, what do you know
| | | Sweet.

But then illegal downloading is great promotion for people who consider to buy a physical copy.
| | | already pre-ordered (red and gold, baby)
also, see you guys at the July 2nd show
| | | yeah i downloaded it and i'm now probably going to buy the vinyl and i wasn't originally, so
| | | damn no shows in Canada, I'd like to catch this tour. Surely not worth me driving to Seattle.
| | |

Yeah I get all of this and agree, but from a business point of view (and even from an artist point of view) I'm sure no one wanted the decision for the internet to be able to hear the album taken out of their hands
| | | and the album is actually really good, what do you know
I thought you rated their first album a 1.5 and yet this sounds so damn similar?
| | | Might listen but I haven't heard Roads to Judah yet
| | | Don't fall into the hype fish, alot of people over-rate the hell out of this band.
| | | I'll overrate you in a minute
| | | Have you ever seen me fall into sputnik hype
| | |

I thought Sunbather was quite different tbh
| | | Will just wait for a torrent to become available.
| | | is Please Remember supposed to sound like absolute shit halfway through?
It's supposed to be staticy, yes.
| | | When I first saw that album cover I hated it. Love it now.
| | | The cover art goes nicely with that of their EP and demo. Roads to Judah is the odd man out in their discog, art-wise ha.
| | | Wait, you mean Deafheaven ARENT on Captured Tracks?

"I'm sure no one wanted the decision for the internet to be able to hear the album taken out of their hands"
yeah but they had to have known exactly what was going to happen when they decided to give out downloads to people who pre-order it. It's a questionable marketing strategy to be sure, but I don't think it was a mistake. They knew exactly what was going to happen.
| | | I don't get what the controversy is, exactly; the album was going to leak in a few days anyway. At the very least this gives Deathwish some brownie points with the fanbase because free stuff always = good. I like this label a little bit more because they gave me the album early. I'm more likely to give them money now, because they seem like a respectable label that is "with" the times.
| | | yeah i bought the vinyl just to get the download. well, i likely would have bought it later anyway though so idk.
either way i could have downloaded a leak but i didn't because i wanted those 320 files and that was enough to get me to buy the record. "package" deals just work on people.
| | | the leak is 320.
| | | the first leak was 160, the second leak is just the 320's from the vinyl pre-order
if your leak came with a pdf, it's the 320
| | | oh well mine has a pdf so that makes sense. i didn't even see it there until now.
| | | yeah but this is def an album that is worth my money
| | | true.
| | | Mine's 320kbps but has no pdf.
This isn't really a leak anyway. The album's simply been released and for some reason they decided to do that several weeks before the official release date

I see it this way: They are well aware that the albums they release will leak and they give the customer the download as an "extra bonus" (if that's the proper analogy for it) for buying the physical not caring if it gets out there early or is pirated or whatever as long as people hear it thats all that matters.Deathwish recognizes the time in which we live where alot of music fans like the download concept and this gives them the opportunity to give people what they want but also maybe introduce them to the physical copy concept if they were never introduced to it ( in these terms I guess more so to the younger generation). It's probably one of the more promising marketing things you could do now a days for a small independent label.
| | | Really liking this a lot more then RTJ much more variety.

No I get this, and also think that the mentality was probably along the lines of "well fuck it, it's probably gonna leak any day now. At least this way we can kind of control it to a degree". I'm literally just thinking (typing?) out loud here, I'm certainly not responding to any one thing in particular. For instance:
I don't get what the controversy is, exactly;
There's certainly no controversy here (wtf???)
| | | should i check this? band has always struck me as intriguing and my kinda queefy bm, but i've been cautious. this seems like a good place to start
| | | Album's streaming now anyway

| | | There's certainly no controversy here (wtf???)
I was loosely using the word to refer to the conversation regarding the label's business practice in question. "Controversy" not meaning "scandal," but more simply a "debate" or discussion of some sort. :-]
| | | that's not really how the word is used though.
| | | That's pretty much the basic definition of the word, though. Its use may now be synonymous with "scandal," but pop culture shouldn't pigeonhole any one word to a specific meaning.
| | |
but pop culture shouldn't pigeonhole any one word to a specific meaning.
wut
| | | Pop culture, society, whatever. Political pundits and newscaster people have given the word a pretty overall negative connotation, which it should not have. Debate isn't bad, nor is it a sign of weakness or scandal.
