Fuck yes this rules. Wasn't overly fond of Ohms but this is hitting right off the bat. Insane production too.
| |
DOA
| |
the kings are back
| |
I think its a good start for the album. It's simple but catchy which is their bread and butter, and the production I'm already enjoying more than Ohms. Looking forward to this one.
| |
You can definitely see they have a certain formula when it comes to their opening tracks.
| |
It’s pretty good but why is Chino mixed so fucking low? Is his voice really that shot
| |
@christbait: aside from similar production sounds to Genesis, I don’t see it
| |
It sounds like a mix between KNY, DE and something new. Very cool opener and can't wait for more!
| |
nice good track
| |
@Relinquished: For me I also get some Diamond Eyes vibes from it. Maybe it's more specific than what I suggested.
| |
New Deftones and Hot Mulligan out same day. Good times
| |
ok i will be the first to aknowledge that Deftones and Loathe are releasing in the same year... again... just sayin... |-)
(and I like the cover art but that green though o.O)
| |
I'm team fuchsia
| |
Digging this track but yeah, seems like Chino is lost in the mix a little
| |
diamond eyes somehow got so underrated with time
| |
the hell it did
| |
wooooo
| |
yeah chino being so low in the mix here is so baffling
| |
Give it a headphones or car listen, he sounds more prominent that way.
| |
ya it sounded fine on my PC with headphones
| |
i always listen with a high quality headphone, just think he sounds buried in a way he wasn't on ohms
| |
Going back to Genesis and, even though his voice is basically altered through about half a dozen effects, he's way more prominent in the mix than on here. In my headphones, it's not as significant as it was when I listened it on my soundbar last night, but he's either drowned in the mix or the gain needed to be dialed back. There's honestly a lot of noise and feedback the more I listen to it. Kind of fucks with the whole song to be honest.
| |
i think you guys might be hindering your enjoyment of deftones by overanalyzing them
| |
It’s as if the vocalist must present himself with the same intentions in the same levels and not use the mixing for dramatic effects
| |
ofc it's an intentional choice, just one i don't dig at least for this track
| |
“ There's honestly a lot of noise and feedback the more I listen to it”
that’s all frank delgado with his synth and ambient work, it’s not “noise and feedback” lol
| |
not overanalysis to note the very first surface level thing you notice upon playing the track lol
anyone with ears can tell in 40 seconds
1. prod is clippy and messy
2. chino is factually super buried compared to everything else he's ever been on
3. it's jarring, and could've been done better
4. song is still good
| |
Really like that production
| |
Synth and ambient work is not what I'm referring to. There seems to be very little noise gating on the guitars and there's just this incredibly LOUD wall of sound through the whole song. It's messy and raw in a way that is not typical to their other stuff. Regardless, the song is still very good but it is not without its problems.
| |
they got Nick Raskulinecz back for the production, the guy who did Diamond Eyes and KNY so no wonder this sounds good
| |
Yeah the mix sounds incredible. People nitpick the everloving shit out of this band smh
Song rules and the album will undoubtedly rule. Also the artwork really grew on me
| |
The more I hear to this, the better it becomes. The production really shines in repeat listens. Still wish it was a little longer -- could have used one of their thumping outro riffs but I guess they've played that out quite a bit already.
| |
Song is pretty good and I can't wait to hear this new one in full
| |
Song isn’t mindblowing but it clears everything on Ohms pretty effortlessly (low bar). Gotta manage my expectations with this one, I think they may have lost the secret sauce
| |
well yeah their last great album was 13 years ago!
| |
Exactly. And their best album came out 15 years ago. It’s all been steadily downhill since
| |
Glad other people are hearing the same thing as me. Listened to this yesterday and first thought was how low in the mix Chino sounds. I hope they fix that for the release, but either way, it sounds in line with Koi. I'll give it a spin and looking forward to hearing the rest of it.
| |
I think that's the thing. Regardless of my opinion on the mix and shit, it's still a really good song that I've listened to several times now. I just wish it was a little cleaner is all.
| |
A BANGER!
| |
it's a deftones song. i like ot
| |
I think it’s as clean as it can get without getting clinical
also that wall of sound is cuz of the HUGE quarternote chords from the guitars, bass, drums, and synths, not that hard to distinguish
| |
this is very good, very excited for this one
| |
Song is good. Hypedfor the new album
| |
I'm hard af
| |
@Relinquished - You’re mistaking analysis for authority. Over-explaining production mechanics doesn’t resolve the deeper discomfort others are registering, it just insulates you from having to feel it.
Christbait isn’t wrong for noticing the dissonance. You’re just uncomfortable that someone said aloud what you’re still rationalizing away.
Calling the mix 'as clean as it can get' is like defending a blurred photograph because the lens was expensive.
The question isn’t how it was made... the question is: why does it feel hollow?
| |
Song rules, quite excited for this
| |
This is far more enjoyable than most of their last couple of albums. Hyped for this
| |
Feels like every time Deftones drops it becomes this big cultural event here on Sputnik and I deeply appreciate it. It's like a family gathering every four years. Hope y'all are doing good ^^
| |
Sputnikmusic is funny.
| |
Why was 2012 so long ago
| |
i remember when snw dropped lol
| |
“diamond eyes somehow got so underrated with time”
I feel like that about Ohms. Such a solid album that gets shit on quite consistently
| |
I feel like that about Gore
| |
good song!
| |
ah no, deftones have become lowercase girlies
| |
"I feel like that about Ohms. Such a solid album that gets shit on quite consistently"
Ohms rips, aged quite well
| |
band never made a bad album and anyone that says otherwise is a liar and a fraud
| |
YouTube compression isn't helping the production, it's a lot better on Spotify. Love it, kind of a mix of KNY and SNW which has me excited as they are my 2 fave albums from them.
| |
better than anything on Ohms
| |
Hell yeah fucking finally. Still the GOATs
| |
gore is kind of shitty but the mix is a big reason why
| |
^ Gore is kind of shitty because they forgot to write actual songs for that record.
Dig the new song.
| |
Gore overall is kind of meh but has some really good songs like Phantom Bride I come back to
Haven’t listened to Ohms since around the time it came out, hoping I will like this one more
| |
Gore is pretty good and overhated. Hearts / Wires, Geometric Headdress and (L)MIRL are great deftones songs (and Phantom Bride too, but that's a pretty usual opinion)
| |
just so people know the vocals being so buried i think has a lot to do with the youtube compression - in FLAC it doesn't sound too dissimilar to ohms, maybe slightly more buried but it definitely works.
| |
Ohms hate is weird. That album is excellent.
| |
3.9 avg and people shit on it constantly lol. Makes no sense
Ohms has some of their best songs (Error, Headless, t/t) but suffers from having their weakest opener. I'm not a fan of Genesis at all, but the rest of the album ranges from good to great.
| |
ohms is so much better than gore but it's a step below their truly great albums
| |
Gore is by far their weakest but I think people would look at it more favorably with better production
A Gore remaster would be awesome actually
| |
I would buy it in a fucking heartbeat tbh
| |
Matt Hyde should be arrested with what he did to the t/t of Gore.
Glad they went with the guy from KNW and DE again, those were objectively their best produced albums.
| |
They are solid but ATF/WP drum sound >>>>>>>>>>
| |
It's great, seems like the album will be going down the Koi No Yokan route
| |
Gore is their weakest release but it is by no means a bad album. A remaster would be super sick though.
| |
Song sounds almost exactly like the majority of Ohms but tryhards in the comments really like "oooo clears everything on Ohms best Deftones song in th last 30 years the boys are back!!" Lmfao
| |
A remaster of Gore should have happened before the original was released to the public.
| |
Slex you are so right
| |
Just entertaining how this band makes mfs act lol
| |
White Pony might be my favourite album of all time. Love everything these guys do and this is no exception. Fucking jacked up to see them in Calgary.
| |
Oooh them snapz
Cant you snap them snapz
| |
The song sounds solid but the mixing is poor
| |
The song sounds solid but the mixing is poor
| |
flat earth metal
| |
I miss when Chino sang about stories like being kidnapped or killing someone in a bathtub
| |
I rate this song, almost wish it went full breakdown at some points - definitely flat earth riffs though agreed
| |
i want to go to the calgary show but i know ill just be annoyed at the tiktok kids and it's expensive af
| |
Fuck that's so good.
| |
Not a fan of this band but this song is cool
| |
“The question isn’t how it was made... the question is: why does it feel hollow?”
bruh idk that sounds like a personal question more than at the song
| |
Gore's title track is goated
| |
Already more excited for this than I was with ohms.
| |
If something once carried density and now echoes, the structure changed. Whether someone likes it is beside the point
| |
gore could have been so much better if they had let carpenter and vera write more, and actually mastered it properly
| |
idk who vera is but carpenter wasn’t interested
| |
same Scoot. happy for their success but I'm not going to a seated stadium Deftones show or paying $150 for the floor. oh well
| |
I'll tell ya, I can whine all day about my gripes with the song but it's been an earworm. I also don't use "my/our mental" when talking about how fucked mental health is but I see why people shorthand it these days. This song improves my mental.
| |
Surprisingly excellent song
| |
i saw them on the diamond eyes tour with mastodon for $90 a floor ticket and this was back in 2010/11
| |
they were still at a peak then also, it’s not surprising. They definitely were climbing in popularity after SNW but people don’t remember
| |
yeah their only kind of fall off was going from wp to s/t because of the abrupt change in sound
aside from minerva it's not really an accessible album whereas with snw they had cherry waves, hole in the earth and beware
| |
i have buddies that told me how popular they were in the late 90s too with atf and then wp turned them into superstars
| |
idk how it’s not accessible when hexagram was a hit and AtF is less accessible for being heavier
| |
tbh I also blame the awkward time between itunes, limewire, and streaming
| |
atf had be quiet though, that's what broke them through
plus nu metal was on its way out in 2003, it was peaking in 97
| |
lol i remember distinctly downloading individual snw tracks on limewire
| |
hell I remember when Mein and Rocket Skates were singles and how each elevated the hype
| |
Mein is dookie caca, can't stand the boomer hard rock tracks on SNW lol
| |
Mein sucks agreed, song could cure insomnia
| |
idc the drums on that song are fun, fuck attributing shit to “boomer this, millennial that” it reads “terminally online”
| |
Drums are the only thing that stands out about that song, you got two of the most iconic vocalists of that era (and genre!) together and… that’s what you got?
Abe is always good that’s a given.
| |
i hate mein lol
| |
kimdracula slaps though
| |
Mein is a fuckin vibe idk what y'all are smoking
| |
https://open.spotify.com/track/4qVqGc1ossRcBqmKCZppx9?si=TX_WuLCnSNO-fJ13MALc6g
this always felt like a deftones standalone single
| |
Ya that single fucking rocks, I bought the vinyl, it’s got a lot of really good singles. Diana by Chelsea Wolfe is another, Jerry Cantrell had Setting Sun, Greg Puciato had a pretty killer one too.
That chino track straight up is fucking peak imo, I wish they’d work that into their setlists somehow. It really is a perfect mix of their older harder hitting shit and the moodier side of things
| |
https://youtu.be/Lz38dawx86A?si=w6soakyZawQfcYpZ
this show was classic back in the day
my god they used to be immense, wish i could have seen this era. they never truly recovered from losing chi but sergio did a commendable job
| |
This album will save Sputnik
| |
"Mein is a fuckin vibe idk what y'all are smoking"
It is, yes.
It's SO Sputnik, to overwhelmingly praise an album that everyone else on planet earth who ISN'T a member here considers mid-tier in their discography, then proceed to shit on one of its best songs.
| |
it's so sputnik to have an opinion right?
| |
^ No issue with opinions. That wasn't the point of my post.
| |
This album gonna crash the site once and for all
| |
nice
| |
"Not a fan of the band but i like this..." well you might just like them then
WP had such a strange eerie sound and production
DE felt like the most streamlined version of the band
agree they have never made a bad album and Ohms was badass
| |
I always assumed 'Diamond Eyes' would forever be my favorite considering it's the album that came out when my fanboyism was at its peak, but it's 'Koi No Yokan' that I come back to the most nowadays.
| |
same, Koi is literally just Diamond Eyes with more ambitious songwriting, in fact the weaker tracks on it are the ones that are the most Diamond Eyes coded… mainly talking about Swerve City.
Obv still an amazing record but it’s probably my fourth or fifth favorite Deftones record at this point. Koi made it obsolete in my eyes
