Pendulum return, debut new video

2020-09-18 by Sarah | 36 Comments
Drum and bass titans Pendulum have returned with their first original material since their 2010 album Immersion and 2011 single "Ransom": "Driver" and "Nothing For Free".

Not much is known about "Driver", but "Nothing For Free" was originally intended for members Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen's other project Knife Party (and was even played at several Knife Party concerts) before being reworked for Pendulum.

Never thought I'd see the day where these guys made a comeback. Songs are good, and its refreshing to hear their sound again. However, they're nothing close to Hold Your Colour

they're decent I guess, but their sound is permanently stuck in the mid-late 00s mentally for me and it's hard to really see these as anything but a sum of nostalgic parts

Hmm I dunno yet. Driver in particular is very generic sounding. Nothing for Free at least doesn't sound like an Immersion B side, that one was pretty cool.

Haven't heard them yet but I fear what Sint said, I think there's a very high chance I'll feel the same about these two, that is if they didn't shake up their sound incredibly (and there's no way they did!).

Hmmm, those two (especially Driver) are not yet dispelling my apprehension.

Watercolour blows + most of the best Pendulum songs have one foot over and one outside of the pop threshold

Agreed, they are not pushing boundaries like Radiohead. They make fun, dumb, loud music. If fans want 'progression' they should satisfy themselves with the Knife party dumbster fire.

the problem is when you stick to your roots you have to make it good or at least satisfying, especially after teasing it for so long, and neither of these tracks would make the cut on any of their previous albums

I don't necessarily disagree with your general point here, but I think these tracks might have been jammed into Immersion. I'm not expecting this album to be much better than a 3/5 but it could be enjoyable for a few listens - its the equivalent of a Hollywood franchise reboot.

''its the equivalent of a Hollywood franchise reboot'' Accurate!

''I think these tracks might have been jammed into Immersion'' perhaps they could have been b-sides, but I don't really see them fit on the actual album. They would stand out as very bland compared to the more obvious catchiness of the Immersion tracks.

they're a good choice to comeback with. two songs that represent the two most visible sides of Pendulum's sound in an accessible way that might appeal to new audiences as well. I have no doubt they've got weirder shit in the pipeline but these are the smart choice for first
