More Mega with Dotcom

2013-01-19 by Deviant. STAFF | 25 Comments
Court-loving teddy bear and New Zealand's favourite long-term tourist Kim Doctom is now in the final stages of launching his new cloud-based Mega service. As Pitchfork reports, the service promises at least 50gb of storage for its users, with Dotcom hoping to provide Megaupload users with access to their old files while also retaining premium privileges for the former site's paying community.

In a recent interview for The Guardian, Dotcom unsurprisingly skirts around the almost compulsory legal proceedings which are sure to come the way of his new internet baby:

"I agree that there will be a certain degree of anxiety around that, and I can fully appreciate and understand that. I would say that with time, when people see what the site is capable of, when they understand the technology, they read the reviews, and people like it, they’re going to try it, and hopefully over time feel comfortable using it for their personal data.

The good thing here is that you can now be sure when you upload your files into the cloud that only you hold the keys – not the service provider, not anyone else outside the service provider, only you personally hold the keys. And what you do with that is your responsibility
."

Megabox, Kim's planned "record label alternative", which has been designed for artists to sell their music directly to the fans themselves, is still, at the least, 6 months away from going online

We need to get this guy his own artist page, simply so I can publish his beaming moon face to as many people as possible

Bandcamp takes a cut of those transactions, though, doesn't it?

Yeah, I heard about this a while ago when they talked about him on "TechStuff", and I thought it was going to be something like 'ME.GA' or something like that, not megabox.

Yeah the 50 gig is for free accounts, 500 gig for the basic package @ $9.99.

The server side encryption will be cool, though makes it easier to spot people sharing music and the privacy settings for the site are strange.

When a user signs up for particular services on our website they may need to give us the details required in our registration form and keep that information up to date;
- Communication logs, traffic data, site usage and other information related to us supplying the services (including for serving of advertising material on our site);
- Any personal information included in data uploaded to our system including but not limited to registration information.

We keep records of IP addresses used to access our services.

They're going to be a bit more helpful to authorities (which is weird, because they did a good job as MegaUpload with that, solid track record of removing infringing files) and can/will report stuff about you to credit agencies:

We can use any information we have about you as a customer relating to your creditworthiness and give that information to any other person for credit assessment and debt collection purposes.
