DoofusWainwright 12.14.15	It's not so much the inclusions but the ratings. This is about polar opposite reactions to albums to me. A lot of the same albums, just different taste.

DoofusWainwright 12.14.15	JS19 - it's just by the end of the year a list like this will have other people's absolute favourites in there. GUNSHIP and Tallest Man in top 5 and Carrie & Lowell and Garden of Delete so low I can't get behind. Too pleasant fluffy discs vs two big beast statement albums. Like I said, fair enough, your taste but miles away from my reaction to those four albums
JS19 12.14.15	Garden of Delete felt like someone sucked all the music out of music for me, and C&L just was bland - i felt nothing, and I sort of realised without feeling anything the album isn't all that special. I disagree that those albums are fluffy as well. Especially tallest man to me. And Gunship is pretty much a perfect pop album - I don't see what's so wrong about rating that highly. But hey, it's just a subjective list : )

DoofusWainwright 12.14.15	I respect that, they are all 'good' albums it's just preferences. The Sufjan is an artist who perhaps in the past was a teeny bit contrived and one step removed emotionally now spilling his guts out and in my opinion musically playing to his best qualities. Garden of Delete is a force of nature, took me about 12 listens to absolutely fall for it but it's an absolute beast and musically I find it almost too rich and melodic now.

DoofusWainwright 12.15.15	Pots I don't agree with the reasoning on GoD - it's the most human sounding of his last three albums. The emotional intentions are clear enough and far more intriguing/inviting than on say the Prurient and Arca albums, which are just cold as f"ck to me (not that they are bad, just mechanical)

DoofusWainwright 12.15.15	I'd say listen to it some more, I mean it's a hummable borderline singable album and I wouldn't say that about the Arca or Prurient, but I only gave it the patience because I literally love every individual sound he uses on that album. If you don't care for the sound palette probably best left at that.

DoofusWainwright 12.15.15	My AOTY is a tin can agreed I thought the idea of the album was filtering his memories and emotions of being a teenager through an alien character, not a machine. It conveys a state of alienated hyper-emotion to me, just read the lyrics for a start

There are vocals, verses and choruses, instrumental solos - not in every song but as a general structure it's quite conventional and actually its intentions are more what you'd expect from rock and pop. There are ballads, there are rockers, there are catchy songs, etc
DoofusWainwright 12.15.15	It's a strange electronic album and I've heard a lot of people complain the tracks work too much like standalone cuts, I think that's because they are more individual songs than what you often associate with electronic where tracks are often working as one section of the overall tapestry of the album or are just there to be sonically intriguing/interesting with no storytelling or narrative behind them. That's my terrible take on it anyway lol

One review on metacritic (can't remember which one) kind of had a similar interpretation to you, that argued this challenges the very notion of art/music and our preconceptions, like this is the album equivalent of Tracy Emin's unmade bed or what have you. Believe me, if that was what this album is about I'd be bored shitless by it That it's a mischievous album I have no doubt, and I believe it's a genius example of dressing conventional forms in abstract clothing.

DoofusWainwright 12.16.15	Pots I've read four or five interviews Daniel has given regarding this album and I've not encountered Ov's quote - he says his main focus was writing 'good songs' and he was trying to capture the hyperactive/depressive dichotomy of teenage years and the music is revelling in the horror/comedy/fascination of body change metamorphosis. It's an album that beats itself to pieces and then falls into a deep depression only to flip into an insane rage again and round and round. I think it's actually brilliant but there you go. The album certainly has verses in nearly every song (pretty much whenever vocals show up) but then they are followed by bastardised instrumental sections that have a repeating melodic motif that occurs again later so effectively a chorus of sorts. Songs like Animals or No Good are clearly ballads in tone, structure and lyrical theme. Sticky Drama is a mashed up pop song. I Bite Through is close to rock. Obviously the album isn't going to be I Wanna Hold Your Hand verse chorus verse but there is a traditional structure at the heart that's been subverted and twisted imo (as opposed to Ov's take which is you start without anything traditional or 'human' as a framework) The comment about the tapestry of sounds was me describing a lot of other electronic music (say this year's Dave DK, sounds good but not songs with a narrative and a lot of the tracks work best as part of the overall flow of the album) and why it's different to this. I don't feel I'm going to convince you on this lol
