1 Year (and A Bit) Anniversary
What's up Sput. Actually been commenting here for more than a year now,
though been here a lot longer than that, and pretty much everyone hates
me so definitely doing something right.
Have at some cool albums: |
1 | | Children of God We Set Fire to the Sky
Tribal drumming, Neurosis-like ambient interludes and metallic hardcore fury. It's
only 30min long but just get this already. Band has great things ahead if they can
keep this up:

2 | | Black Swan Black Swan (In 8 Movements)
These guys have put out a lot of material since 2010, but this is their first album
and probably their best so far. Dark Ambient with a light touch, kinda like a 'light at
the end of the tunnel' which sets it apart. All about atmosphere:

3 | | Magyar Posse Random Avenger
Uplifting, complex and suprisingly un-cliche post rock. Reminds of early A Silver
Mount Zion with jazzy elements. European Lover/Random Avenger is one of the
better post rock tracks period.

4 | | The Psyke Project Guillotine
Aw hell this is crushing. Sludge metal with suffocating production and a hardcore-
like tempo. Turn it up (oh and it's free):

5 | | Moon Safari Blomljud
A huge prog double album from these guys. They specialize in happy, upbeat
compositions and have an incredible talent for close vocal harmonies (which
admittedtly can come across more than a bit twee). Some monster tracks here: the
Other Half of the Sky surpasses 30min but these guys hardly put a foot wrong here.

6 | | To-Mera Delusions
Not very well received by the reviewers on this site (understatement), but if you
can get past female vocals, blastbeats and shifting time signatures then this is
really something special. Oh did I forget the mention the jazz interludes? ... and the
sax solo on Asylum?

7 | | Nice Wings, Icarus! Aurora
Post metal with a solo violinist. The band can really write a tune, even without
vocals. Another freebie, check 'em out:

8 | | Johnnytwentythree JXXIII
On paper, this band looks like it falls into every post-rock trap in the book.
Pretentious name, super long song titles, slow build ups. It's just not the case, this
is some of the most well crafted, emotionally resonant stuff around.

9 | | Faunts M4
Apart from getting M4(part II) featured in the crddits for Mass Effect 1, this band
has had hardly any exposure. Pretty criminal really, they mix electronic beats and
soundscapes with indie rock. Stirring stuff:

10 | | Nils Frahm Spaces
Currently top of the Sputnik charts for 2013, but without a review. Nils Frahm has
been doing his neo-classical/ambient thing for years with a moderate amount of
recognitions. this album takes the best of some of his recent live shows and
stitches them together into an incredible album, mostly full of solo piano work, but
with smatterings of electronics. Says is my track of last year.
