| 5/5 Emo Songs on Overlooked/Unexpected Albums
Just as the title might give away, these are really great songs that are place on something you might have overlooked, never heard of, or placed on mediocre albums that hide it. Give them a try cause some of these are quite great. | | 1 |  | Young Jesus
Young Jesus
River- An album that hasn't seen much attention since its release a few months back. River is a beautiful song with some extremely passionate vocals and one hell of a sendoff in the form of crushing instrumentation with the lyrics "I guess I'll see you around". While the much larger Storm is arguably the biggest highlight of the album, River is one of those songs that has such a replay factor and it really never gets old. | | 2 |  | Brave Bird
Maybe You, No One Else Worth It
Maybe You, No One Else Worth It- The first few songs on this would have someone believe this is run of the mill revival emo bullshit, and they would actually quite right. This album is really not that great, that is aside from a few slow burning tracks, especially the titular and penultimate track. It is a revival masterpiece from beginning to end that never fails to put a smile on my face. The shouted vocals of "You are a lost cause" are seriously so well done with the intricate guitar playing and the band just sounds so at home with their craft. It evokes so many different emotions all at once in such a special way. Wish i could say the same for most of the album. | | 3 |  | United Nations
The Next Four Years
F#A#$- An overlooked gem in the screamo/grind genre, The Next Four Years sees Geoff Rickley and co. performing some of the most massive screamo in ages. However, nothing beats the first minute and a half of F#A#$ which has one of the most perfect guitars ever put to a song admist a bombastic chaos of drumming and sound. Geoff's screeching sounds beyond pissed and the lyrics are beyond cynical, and even after the minute and a half introduction of the song is over the song still manages to pull off one breathtaking finale. Everyone Asked About You
Paper Airplanes, Paper Hearts- It is really hard to comprehend how this band has such little recognition. While the EP itself really is not all that special today, even considering the fact that this is one of the first showcases of midwestern emo; its just very lackluster after its perfect first two songs. One of the two, Paper Airplanes, Paper Heats introduces the EP in perfect fashion with one of the best breakdowns in the genre, with a pretty great harmony between both vocalists. Also who would have thought one of the pioneers of midwestern emo would use primarily female vocals. All American Football fans should atleast jam this and the second song. | | 5 |  | Merchant Ships

Sleep Patterns- This is one of the most surprising tracks ever put on a screamo album. Its an acoustic song that comes out of left field in the most emotionally destructive way possible. Its quite an experience and it tells a little bit of a story that I don't really want to spoil. If you haven't checked this out, definetly give it a try because it seriously is a super haunting and depressing piece, especially the "On and on we run away, from the things we are afraid" part which manages to give me chills each time. | | 6 |  | The Spill Canvas
Sunsets and Car Crashes
Aim Snap Fall- While this album is loaded with extremely good acoustic rock tracks, especially The Tide which is one of the all time great acoustic songs in my opinion; opener Aim, Snap, Fall opens the album on such a fine note. Sad, slow, and somber; the lyrics "I think I found my better half" are used to an absolutely haunting way, and sets the tone of the album up perfectly. | | 7 |  | Dilute
Grape Blueprints Pour Spinach Olive Grape
Alphabet- An album that has started to gain some notoriety on this site over the past few months, Grape Blueprints is one great math-rock/emo album, but the highlight of the album has to go to the gorgeous 9 minute behemoth known as Alphabet. Its a beautiful track with a beautiful build and a beautiful finale, please check this out and give this band some damn recognition. | | 8 |  | The Brave Little Abacus
Masked Dancers
I See It Too- It seems everyone only likes to praise Just Got Back From Discomfort as the only thing worth checking out from this band, which is completely wrong. While this album does not reach the same heights of that album in consistency, it however is home to my favorite song by the band. Starting in a very minimalistic fashion with just a single guitar line every so often, the vocals come in and it starts to build. Building to what exactly? One of the best goddamn emo riffs you will here in a while followed by whatever else the band could throw in. An accoustic riff backed up by excellent druming, a breathtaking piano solo, and a part made 1000 times better by some of the most gorgeous horns ever put to emo music in the last chorus of the middle section. Sadly overlooked by its younger brother, this is a must listen if you dug Just Got Back From Discomfort. | | 9 |  | On The Might of Princes

For Meg- Pretty much one of the most epic screamo tracks of all time. Not much to comment on here except that the fact that this thing only has 78 votes is sickening. "Ill scream it, til your ears bleed. You'll always have a friend in me". | | 10 |  | Moving Mountains/Prawn
Split
Deathless- The best song Moving Mountains has done since Pneuma and Foreword, and they put it on some obscure split with Prawn. Deathless is at once very much like some of the songs on their self titled, but energized and expanded upon. It sees the band lyrically at an all time high such as "Watch your breath consume you, suffer now seems far too soon" and "I broke my limbs on a city street, just to show you what you mean to me". While it is not a return to the old days, this is the band reaching new heights with their sound. | |
