pedro70512 09.29.14	for real though, I'd go with Priest. Their combination of founding classic (Sad Wings), definition of heavy metal (Stained Class), commercial breakthrough (British Steel/Screaming), and late career triumph (Painkiller) are hard to argue against.

They're good but I have many favs I like more than death." i'm not saying that death is my fav (although certainly up there), but as the band that virtually invented death metal (along with possessed barring a few early prototypes) and also released great albums in several different styles and whose 90s run is one of the better four album stretches in history, they deserve to be in the conversation
Inveigh 09.30.14	There are a lot of bands that you could make an argument for, but I'd probably go Sabbath. Neurosis, Death, Metallica (yep), Celtic Frost, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Carcass are all in the running too. Shit, I'm sure a ton of people would argue Pantera or Slayer. none of the bands on this list are bad choices, although I'm not sure Deftones would rank top 10 for me if we're discussing pure metal (don't get me wrong, Deftones are easily one of my 5 favorite bands ever, I just think they would rank pretty highly on a list of "alternative" bands or something)
