11.22.12 | I can't stand modern gaming. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO USE THE MOUSE TO TURN?!? I've been playing FPS's for 20+ years and they were doing just fine with arrow-key controls in the 90s. Also, why are we using WASD now, what is this, 1988?! I remember how cumbersome it was back then, too. Which is why, y'know, WE STARTED USING THE ARROWS. Still waiting for games to start forcing us to use O and P or Q and E to move back and forth again, too. Those were good times, right? NOT.
Also, fuck Call of Duty and Halo.

11.22.12 | Ever since I moved to Malaysia I've been playing mostly PC games. Until I got my Wii a couple of years ago. There are pros and cons to both platforms. The worst thing about vetting serious about PC taking is when you spend a shitload building a PC, and in a couple of years it pretty much becomes obsolete. |
Masochist
11.22.12 | That's a terrible generalization of PC gaming. Yes, you do have to upgrade your hardware to keep up...but you don't have to lose any of your old games in the process like you do with most consoles (I still play SimCity 3000 from time to time). With PC, you have updates and mods. With PC, you have a HUGE amount of indie games to choose from (that can be distributed from private websites by anyone instead of having to go through a certification process to be added into a console's game store). With PC, the graphics don't have limitations--you can have a game that pushes graphics to the limits and not have to adhere to the constraints of a console's hardware. And let's not forget the added bonus of simply being a computer.
Also...when you really spend the money to build a PC for gaming, it can be up to date for at least five years or so (or at least be able to run the games you want to run). |

11.22.12 | It can depend what kind of games/gaming you like as to whether or not PC gaming is for you.
If you want to play FPS, strategy/RTS games, or MMOs, PC is superior (although consoles are pretty decent for FPS, mouse/keyboard gives you better control than you could ever have w/ a controller once you get insanely good with it).
If you want to play sports games or just like to play something when friends come over, console is much better. (PC can be social though, if you make an effort to make friends on Steam or an MMO or whatever.) |

Guild Wars 2

11.22.12 | Don't worry about having to upgrade a lot unless you always want to play the latest graphics monsters at resolutions and qualities that laugh at consoles. When you do need to upgrade all you usually need is a new graphics card anyway and that's cheap as long as you don't buy the latest model and really easy to do. Just make sure you get a big case and a good power supply so it's upgradeable.
The biggest plus is being able to play modded games. The bigger titles usually have loads of mods and unofficial bug fix patches not long after release. Also mods that improve and expand the gameplay lots. Furthermore many older games have some incredible mods that are free and are overhauls (the total war games for example have a full LOTR mod that's better than any official release -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhBuSkVQXwA ). Also you get your games dirt cheap if you only buy during steam sales.
Consoles have their own advantages too of course. |

everyone else - computer upgrading is pretty unnecessary. the new engines coming out do such a good job of utilizing computer hardware that i can still play dishonored at low-mid quality with no lag. my machine is 5 years old and my graphics card has been out of production for at least 2 years. to be clear, low-mid quality is pretty much what you get on xbox360 and ps3 |

jdennis31

11.22.12 | Guild Wars 2 rocks |
jdennis31
11.22.12 | my upgrade comment is dumb though, it mostly only applies to shooters. i still need to upgrade the graphics card so i can play more modern rts and sports games. i can play nba2k13 no lag but completely stripped down. but i mean, my graphics card is so outdated even a 60 dollar card would allow me to play games for another few years. considering i can just dl the games and not pay 60 per copy, still saving a shitload of money |

a. whats wrong with simulation games? I don't know of any first person sim anyway b. as is life c. what? d. call me old fashioned but I don't really care what my game looks like if I enjoy it. EvoHavok

jdennis31
11.22.12 | werd, i just assumed that it had to do with the engines since most shooters are running smoother nowadays. and i know what youre saying about a good computer, its just that even the cheapest parts today are as good as the most expensive commercial products back when crysis 1 came out. shit computer today = amazing system 5+ years ago |

As for life being repetitive, I thought videogames were supposed to be escapism?
See above for graphic comment. I agree with your point of view, but presenting people with graphics 20 years out of date is shitting on the customer, no?
@jdennis: I have more fun playing Wolfenstein 3D than any modern FPS. At least I'm not fumbling to press 20 keys at once in order to avoid getting raped by the AI. Or being shot in the back as I'm walking along because some asshole spawned right behind me on a multiplayer map. |

I don't see why that's a complaint considering it's meant to have a sense of realism. As for the zombies ass raping you at night, that's where the challenge is, obviously if zombies come out at night you don't want to go camping in open space. It doesn't mean it's unfair, it just means use common sense. |

ReturnToRock
11.22.12 | On that note, YouTube user Guru Larry has built a pretty impressive replica of the old Watford branch of Woolworth's. Considering the "blazing speed" at which you obtain tiles on this game, I shudder to think how long it took him just to get the basic outline. |
mvood
11.22.12 | "Yeah. Because every other game kills you while you're unable to react, right?"
Well that's stupid. Why are you comparing a mechanic that wouldn't fit in any other game? If they made it so you can just sleep anywhere you want in safety it takes away the concept of survival, like I said it's a survival game. I take it you don't understand the concept of; open field, zombies around, that going to sleep will get you attacked? ps. it doesn't kill you, it takes like 1 hp away if you're not a noob and stand still. |
mvood
11.22.12 | Best part of the game is the rush to build a shelter, if you don't understand that that's the primary objective, then yeah it's the wrong game for you. |
ReturnToRock
11.22.12 | Yeah except I saw someone get attacked while sleeping in a room in a house they'd built. Because he hadn't locked the doors. |
mvood
11.22.12 | you're saying it like it's a bad thing. that's awesome that they've made that extra effort to incorporate that mechanic. |
ReturnToRock
11.22.12 | Yeah, imagine if while you're talking to Toad in Mario Bros and he's saying your princess is in another castle, a Goomba came around and you died. Or those games where you can die during cutscenes because the game doesn't pause to acknowledge the cinematic. Those are cool, huh? |
mvood
11.22.12 | dumb comparisons because they're not comparisons at all, it's apples and pears. |
jdennis31
11.22.12 | this game actually sounds fun but really time consuming |
ReturnToRock
11.22.12 | How so? They are examples of a game fucking you up while you're unable to react (due to a cutscene). Or imagine if a wild Pokemon or trainer appeared while you're at Ash's house or at the Pokecenter on Blue/Red. Same thing. |
mvood
11.22.12 | Well the point of sleeping in Minecraft is that you do it when you're in safety, it's a mechanic that incorporates real life
tendencies, ie. you wouldn't get a sleeping bag out and nod off for the night when you're in the middle of hungry bears. It
would be dumb if you were in the middle of all these monsters whacked out a bed and then wake up unharmed. In the
case of Mario, that's a platformer. If that event ever occurred in it then it would be unfair but it has nothing to do with the
concept of minecraft and it would have no concept behind it other than bad game mechanics. |
dammets
