Pitchforkarms' 2014
As if any of you care (you don't), here's what I've been thinking about 2014
thus far. I'm not going to mention the really low rated ones like Black
Tongue. These are my some of my favorites, some disappointments, and
some surprises. |
20 | | Animals as Leaders The Joy of Motion
Ehhhh, it's a little boring. The great parts are overshadowed by chugz and the wank
is just not good enough to draw you in. Not bad, just another AaL album. 2.9/3 |
19 | | Killer Be Killed Killer Be Killed
WAY better than expected, but still not great. Puciato is the bomb, but it's pretty
generic and lame at times. Jams though if you're lookin to headbang 3/5 |
18 | | Clipping CLPPNG
Rap that is supposed to be really "experimental". Its alright but doesn't pique my
interest throughout. Some great tracks though. 3.2/5 |
17 | | Destrage Are You Kidding Me? No
Actually thought I'd like this way more. The clean vox aren't my cup of tea, and it's a
little stale, but it still jams hard. 3.5/5 |
16 | | Chevelle La Gargola
Actually kind of experimental for this type of group. I enjoy this more than I thought
I would. Something else that is good that may be heard on the radio. 3.5/5 |
15 | | Mastodon Once More 'Round the Sun
Better than The Hunter, which is pretty easy to do. Not really what I was hoping to
hear, but this band is past what I want to hear from them. Good music that I may
hear on the radio. 3.5/5 |
14 | | Every Time I Die From Parts Unknown
Not as great as everyone says, but I've been enjoying it. Sounds pretty much like
ETID should. 3.5/5 |
13 | | Boris Noise
It's Boris guys. They strike again with a solid record that lacks a bit of the power of
their past work. 3.7/5 |
12 | | Eyehategod Eyehategod
Heavy......... This makes me hate god. 3.7/5 |
11 | | The Kindred Life in Lucidity
Cool new-age prog-metal with wailing vocals. Not for everyone for sure. 3.7/5 |
10 | | Tides of Man Young and Courageous
ToM drop the plastic post-hardcore facade and pick up a very nice post-rock aura that
has a lot more emotion than anything they used to do. Solid. 3.7/5 |
9 | | Casualties of Cool Casualties of Cool
Really unique ambient country with awesome guitar and vocal work. It's guilty of
having a little bit of filler though. Devin Townsend rules all. 3.8/5 |
8 | | Dead Congregation Promulgation of the Fall
Death-metal (a little doom in there sometimes) that shreds, hard. 3.8/5 |
7 | | Swans To Be Kind
A little lengthy, it drags at time but the highlights more than make up for it. Swans do
it once again. 3.8/5 |
6 | | Morbus Chron Sweven
Very well written death-metal mixed with some cool prog. Vocals can be off-putting at
times, but it slays so it doesn't matter. 4/5 |
5 | | Cryptodira An Unmarked Grave
EP from a really diverse band who play an eclectic style of progressive death-metal
and post-metal and even some hardcore. Not as good as previous release but a great
2 song EP nonetheless. 4/5 |
4 | | The Mire Glass Cathedrals
It's like if Meshuggah played post-metal. The density is really entrancing. If it was
any longer, it would be a little repetitive. 4.1/5 |
3 | | Comrades Safekeeper
Post-rock mixed with some atmospheric alternative and the heavier side of post-
hardcore. Really moving and passionate. 4.5/5 |
2 | | The Hotelier Home, Like NoPlace Is There
Some of the most cathartic and emotional music I've heard in quite a long time.
Catchy, intelligent, and powerful. 4.7/5 |
1 | | Locktender Rodin
Hardcore tinged post-metal with epic songwriting. My favorite of the year so far and
one of my favorites ever. 5/5 |
