07.15.21 | Ok. Let's see what Colosseum II album can offer to us. About the Quiet Sun album I know it very well. I even published a review of it on Sputnik, besides the review of our friend and colleague menawati. So, "Mainstream" hasn't any secrets to me and I love it. But, I'm sure that I'm going to like of "War Dance" too. I really like very much of Collosem and I'm pretty sure that I'll like of Colloseum II, too.
So, it seems that we are going to have another very busy week with another two great albums. Fortunatelly, I only need to be pratically focused on Colloseum's album. Lucky me.
Happy week with great prog my friends. |

07.15.21 | Hey, it seems that is coming my turn, my baptism with an album. It seems interesting. I only heard to talk about Colosseum but I never listened non of their albums. I am sure it will be a great album too. I am also sure that this will be another great musical round, as with the others. Nice prog week, friends. |

07.15.21 | Oh cool, a new round! |

07.15.21 | I'm more familiar with Quiet Sun which is a great album.

07.15.21 | just to be aware I was 5 old fashions into the night when I wrote this to Friday on my phone. I offered some revisions later but in the spirit of competition he left me looking like an idiot, that's fine; hope it doesn't hurt the album's chances.
thought you might like some of the other albums that I was considering, if you still cant get enough prog right now.

07.15.21 | From my initial listens a few weeks ago, I very much enjoyed quiet sun and not colosseum but let’s see how they aged |

07.15.21 | No worries Friday, after I sent it, I thought “Shit”, I should have read it before I sent it |
e210013
07.15.21 | Don't worry wham, my friend. All those albums mentioned by you are great too. We will never know if we made the right choice. Look at me. I thought that I did a great choice, but it seems I was wrong. This is my fourth participation here and this is the first time that my album was put out in the first round. But, I'm not worried with that. I'm really very comfortable with it. What counts is the spirit of discover new and fascinating unknow prog albums, which probably is the only way to can know about their existence. |

07.16.21 | It’s hard to pick one universal enough that people are going to like, I’m usually way off |

07.16.21 | Quiet Sun is great and so is Colosseum, though I haven't checked War Dance yet
Oh wait, this isn't Colosseum, it's Colosseum II! |
e210013
07.16.21 | Yeah, Gentleman. But, Colosseum II is also great. After a first listening I loved it. |

07.17.21 | Bloody love that Quiet Sun album |
Jethro42
07.17.21 | Yeah, Colosseum II meets a giant. |
Jethro42
07.17.21 | Colosseum II offers jazzy, up tempo tracks both reminiscent of Chick Corea Electrik Band, Al Di Meola, Patrick Moraz and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Songs tend to sound all the same (save exceptions), and therefore it loses points. For me, outstanding songs are ''Castles'', ''The Inquisition'', ''Star/ Maiden/Mysteriosos/Quasar'' and ''Last Exit''. Album jams and improvs a lot.
Quiet Sun is moving a lot in a mid pace, with several patterns. From rhythm section to piano to repetitive keyboards interplayed with soaring, melodic guitar, and we nearly have Canterbury Scene kind of music. Not too jazzy this time, rather repetitive colored music. Quiet Sun is also spacey and deep. It's more of my style.
I'm voting for Quiet Sun

zakalwe
07.17.21 | The best thing Colosseum did was their first incarnation and debut those about to die salute you.
I’m going for Quiet Sun |
bgillesp
07.18.21 | Voting Quiet Sun. Colosseum II isn’t bad, but it is easily my least favorite this year. Quiet Sun is in the solid middle. |
Zig
07.18.21 | Quiet Sun gets my vote, mainly for a more and better musicality, it's full of amazing landscapes. Colosseum is surely a nice record, but it gets too restrained to the typical 'jazz fusion sound'. |

The original vinyl album is only 39.19. I've been listening to that. |

07.19.21 | Oh damn nice catch Divaman. Only the first 7 tracks are from the og release. I guess the extras are just alt version as some kind of deluxe package thing. Thanks! |

07.19.21 | I'll vote for Quiet Sun, pretty much because of what Zig said
But War Dance is a great record with many superb moments |
Inoculaeted
07.19.21 | Can’t help but feel like RFD inspired a large swath of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. At least “In the Morning of the Magicians” with that synth tone. Both tracks are sublime. |
e210013
07.20.21 | After 4 auditions of both albums:
Colosseum II - War Dance:
Colosseum II is the second version of the former band Colloseum. The band is almost an instrumental band that made a very interesting jazz/fusion. "War Dance" is considered their best work that is focused on instrumentation, soloing and with only one sung and romantic song. Like Jethro, it also reminds me Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea and Al Di Meola. The performance is perfect. The last three tracks are probably the best, especially "The Inquisition", which is simply amazing. However, this is an album without weak points.
Quiet Sun - Mainstream:
This is a very special album in the Canterbury scene. This is more spacey and symphonic than the usual Canterbury albums. It's a very complex and creative album with a very own character and performed by a bunch of astonishing artists. This album features well composed melodic development combined with shifting sound textures that creates one of the most unique fusions of jazz-rock rhythms and progressive rock compositions. So, it's a standout album, a unique approach of incorporating the Canterbury Scene with the hard rock.
"War Dance" rated with 4.0.
"Mainstream" rated with 4.5.
So, despite I like very much of both, my vote goes naturally to "Mainstream". It's more original, a quite unique album. I simply love it. |
MiloRuggles
07.20.21 | On paper, Mainstream is more in tune with my musical proclivities with its loose, ineffable vibe and time signature fuckery, but [oh fuck I'm in the minority] I found it a bit inconsistent as a whole and thought that at least a couple of the longer solos kept going long after the soloist had run dry on ideas (looking at you, bass solo). Also, those lyrics lol. I'll give it a couple more listens later down the line, cause it seems to be a sleeper classic by rep.
Anyhow, War Dance is the kinda thing that could strike as really dry, but the musicianship is just astonishing and the band is so tight. The Inquisition is absolutely nuts. Really enjoyed this record, it's getting my vote. |
e210013
07.20.21 | Nice to see someone with a discordant opinion Milo. I really dislike the uniformity in everything. Besides, "War Dance" is an excellent work. |

07.20.21 | @Inoculaeted Interesting, I'll have to listen with the Flaming Lips in mind. |
Inoculaeted
07.20.21 | Might just be the tone on the keys and the general dreamy loose composition they built around that for that track, but for some reason it brought me all the way back to Yoshimi and it’s probably been a good 5-10 years since I jammed that one. |
Inoculaeted
07.20.21 | My vote is going Quiet Sun. Enjoying the equally technical and whimsical War Dance quite a bit though. The performances, as already mentioned, are very tight and when they go in hard they draw comparisons to instrumental gods Rush. Having said that, there’s a cringe-inducing imminently skippable track called “Castles”. I like when they keep it rock focused.
Quiet Sun has great potential for me to live up to its deep cut cult classic status. Great shit. Possible tournament winning shit. Wasn’t a fair matchup for my tastes. |
Inoculaeted
07.20.21 | Damnit double post. Uuuh Quiet Sun rules. |
TheIntruder
07.20.21 | It's not a big surprise that my vote is going to Mainstream. I really like very much of War Dance. It is a nice surprise. It is very well performed and has some killer tracks. But I prefer the album of Quiet Sun. So, Mainstream. |
TwigTW
07.20.21 | I like both of these very much. I wish they were not in the same round, so I could vote for both of them. But since I have to choose ...my vote goes to Quiet Son (but honestly, it was a coin toss). |
Divaman
07.20.21 | Neither of these albums is perfectly in my prog sweet spot, but one is closer than the other.
Colosseum II has several different sounds, but there's a clear Chick Correa kind of jazz going on for at the early part of it, and something close to soul towards the end.
Quiet Sun is a more traditional prog album, although even after three listens, there wasn't anything that strongly jumped out at me.
Nevertheless, while I hate to pile on, my vote goes to Quiet Sun. (Apologies to my friend Wham.) |
Pangea
07.20.21 | Colosseum II is very exciting technical jazz fusion. really fun stuff. Really don't like the vocal track though, it is horribly out of place and cheesy on its own as well. Quiet Sun is more even, but well, also a tad boring. Most tracks don't really go anywere and while there are some interesting sounds, i don't think the band does enough with it
my vote is for colosseum II |
wham49
07.21.21 | Pretty futile at this point, I try to bring more obscure sounding bands, rather than just obscure band names with already familiar sounds so I understand losing
I’ll vote for myself as I am pretty vain, but the Canterbury fair of prog never really gets me going, so I would have voted that way anyway
Peace out bros |

07.21.21 | Can I vote later today? I didn't have the time to go properly through these. |
Mythodea
07.21.21 | Okay, so, my vote goes to Quiet Sun as well. While both albums were highly enjoyable, I couldn't enjoy Colloseum's album as a whole experience, but I would definitely jam some songs individually in a playlist. The ''Castle'' song especially was great and I dug the vocals and the general atmosphere. Quiet Sun is indeed more familiar to what's been going on in the prog sphere, nothing we haven't heard of before, but flows better, has richer dynamics and spacing between songs, and doesn't tire you too soon. I loved the ''Trot'' piece, both piano and bass are excellent, but I found the vocals to be too ''70's'' if that's a complaint I can make. Also, chilling album cover, serene but simultaneously scary? Anyways...
Thanks to both wham and Intruder for those amazing finds and Friday for this great round! |

07.21.21 | The opening title track for Wardance is quite the statement. I like the polyrhythm opening with 3 against 4, then some Tchaikovsky in the mix, and the main melody is catchy. |
Friday13th
07.21.21 | I really dig the Colosseum II album. The songs are memorable, energetic and fun. It's a tough match against Quiet Sun, which I have known for quite some time now. Both are very different. Quiet Sun is certainly the more experimental and unique of the two, but that's not always everything. |

07.21.21 | Hey gang, Friday's got the new round up already. |
SharkTooth
07.21.21 | Oh dear, this is the toughest mashup for me, I think these are both top contenders
1 is like 70s rock at its finest, I love the instrumentation and retro sound to it
2 is the hypnotic jazz I love about canterbury prog, with equally great instrumentation
dammit I wish these rounds were longer |
