Jethro42 09.13.17	no 2 is playful music. These guys seem to have fun doing what they do. But wait, it's no serious music lol. Country, gospel, jazz, blues and proto-prog in a dated but funny sounding with that tickling brass. The gospel/soul moments remind me of Jesus Christ Superstar, and it's a good thing. Musicianship is great. Don't know what to do with it after one listen.

Country and gospel aren't genres I typically go for but I have to say, their ability to fuse so many different genres together into a cohesive package is impressive. I enjoyed it overall although I too am leaning more towards one but will give both albums some more listens since Friday has given us such a generous window to do so!
Jethro42 09.14.17	I agree with you SCREAM, they know how to merge those genres together at their advantage. I definitely prefer the jam rock style of 801. Album starts strongly and it seduced me. I'm not a fan of the adding of The Kinks cover though, and it's true it loses meat on its 2nd half, but it's a great listen overall. 801 gets my vote.
Friday13th 09.14.17	Oh man, 801 is just fantastic. It helps that I'm familiar with the Eno songs "Baby's on Fire", "Sombre Reptiles", and "Third Uncle" as well as the Beatles and Kinks covers. It's all done very well and with a distinct twist. I still gotta find the original Manzanera tracks to make a proper judgment.

Friday13th 09.14.17	The Flock is quite impressive. A lot of high-energy jazz rock similar to maybe Chicago at their hardest, and maybe even some Frank Zappa. The vocals might take some getting used to, but the album certainly keeps your attention.

Mythodea 09.14.17	801 was great, really nice sound and the bass was indeed a hihglight. Halfway through the Dinosaur Swamps, though, and even if it's quite extravagant, I love its style and creativity. I was never the guy to listen to americana, but the way it's blend in here, really makes it interesting. I thought I'd give my vote to 801, but the mindset of The Flock has won me. Won't vote just yet, however.

Papa Universe 09.14.17	So I wrote up a lil' sum'thn: 801 - 801 Live I'm just gonna go ahead and warn you that I'll take the burden of positivity-ruiner on myself, because I found this album to be utterly boring, even though the instrumental side of things was quite impressive. I had a hard time sitting through it once and I completely gave up half-way through on the second try. It's just not hitting any notes with me. 2.6/5 The Flock - Dinosaur Swamps This album has an exuberantly jolly and exhaustingly magical atmosphere to it. It seemed as if I found myself in a strange world of happiness and almost Jodorowsky-like surreal weirdness. It is somewhat tiring towards by the end, but is nevertheless extremely fun with breaks. 4.0/5

Why is everyone saying 801 is boring? It's business as usual, but definitely not boring. People make it sound like it's a drag to even put it on.
Friday13th 09.14.17	I don't think 801 Live is boring at all, and I think only UniqueUniverse said so. That's a little more understandable if you don't like other Eno works, but it's one of the least boring albums he's done. Albums like Another Green World and Ambient Music rule and all, but those are prime candidates for the "boring" criticism.

Are any of you planning on seeing them on their current tour? Have you seen any live versions of King Crimson in the past? Thanks.
TwigTW 09.14.17	I saw this version of King Crimson 2 years ago. Not sure what kind of info you are looking for, but they have three drummers now, so it really is a wall of sound. It’s thick with drums and saxophone and guitars. It really hits you hard (in a good way). What surprised me the most was Fripp was just one of the guys. I expected to see him spotlighted front and center, but no. They didn’t do anything from the Adrian Belew period, (which disapointed me a little), but they included more obscure tracks from the early years. They have a new EP out covering Bowie’s ‘Heroes.’ I guess they’re playing it in the encore on this time around. They were great. Don’t miss them.

Jethro42 09.14.17	I've seen King Crimson for Beat and for Three of a Perfect Pair tours in the early 80's. If memory serves well, for the first show they played Discipline and Beat nearly in their entirety, plus maybe Red (the song), Easy Money and Schizoid Man. It was sensational and generous indeed. Fripp were sitting in a chair all the shows long. And when he got wild on guitar, he raised a leg haha...

Divaman 09.15.17	Back on topic, I've given them each a first listen. I know which way I'm leaning, but I'll wait to say until I'm ready to vote.
Divaman 09.15.17	Feel free to skip this post -- no offence will be taken. I wanted to post a little about how I hear music, to hopefully explain my votes. 1. I'm not a musician, beyond being able to noodle around a little on guitar; 2. Vocals are very important to me. And if you've got some good vocal harmonies, so much the better; 3. I tend to be very positive towards bands that use a lot of synths and/or keyboards (although I'm less fond of the organ than I am of piano, harpsichord, etc.); I also like well-played acoustic guitars; 4. I'd much rather hear strong songwriting with basic instrumentation than brilliant musicianship on so-so songs; 5. I like stuff that's melodic; I'm not crazy about stuff that's harsh sounding; 6. As far as prog rock goes, I'm partial to bands that mostly mix rock with classical or folk; I'm not crazy about bands with heavy jazz influences; and 7. If the band has some Celtic or English Renaissance sounds, again, so-much the better. On the other hand, stuff with a fair degree of German synthesizer music is good too. I'll vote on Round 1 tomorrow.

You get some bonus points because they're from Switzerland, though. 99.9% of my knowledge of prog rock bands is of bands from Britain or the U.S., so I really appreciate all of the entries you guys have thrown me from Switzerland, Greece, Portugal, France/Germany, Italy and the French part of Canada. The only entry besides my own that I was previously familiar with is Todd Rundgren (although of course I know Brian Eno and Roxy Music from the 801 Band). So I promise I'll listen with an open mind.

I 2 am not a musician and tend the hear the band as a whole and not concentrate on one musician, I like to see interplay between the musicians and the meandering road they take. I like an overall sound instead of just songs sounding different from each other on albums, but I do like diversity in a band, unless it is something like Motorhead, where they got it right the first time and change in their case would be bad. Vocals are not really important to me unless they are bad, or overpower the music

Side one of their debut album is an enjoyable listen...I'm in for side two :) It's an easier listen than Dinosaur Swamps so far. More simple, more melodious too. I could see you digging Yezda Urfa - Boris. Not exactly the same style, but for some reasons, I find some similarities, probably in the way both bands can be eccentric. Jon Anderson has a beautiful (if somewhat Hobbit-like) voice, and Yes always had great harmonies. I've always felt that Greg Lake had, perhaps, the most beautiful male voice in all of rock. Ian Anderson and Gary Brooker each have very distinctive voices, and while I appreciate they're not for everyone, I really like both. Annie Haslam, Dave Cousins -- I could go on and on about singers in prog rock bands whose vocals add something special to the music.

Divaman 09.15.17	So no surprise based on what I told you earlier, my vote in M1 goes to 801. Here are my thoughts: Vocals are pretty much a wash. Both are OK, neither are great. I probably like 801's vocals a little better. Same thing with songwriting -- with just a few exceptions, not many of the songs blew me away as songs. With 801: -- I liked what Eno was doing in various spots, although I wish they'd used him more throughout. -- Any time you throw me a funny, goofy song like "Baby's on Fire", it's a plus -- I particularly loved the guitar work on "Diamond Head" -- The Kinks cover didn't bother me the way it did many of the rest of you. I kind of liked it. With The Flock: -- Often sounded like Chicago meets The Grateful Dead to me. A slight positive -- I mildly like Chicago, I like the Grateful Dead a little more. -- Other times, they reminded me of Donovan, at least vocally ""Hornschmeyer's Island" -- Psychedelica with brass. Interesting. -- "Lighthouse" and "Crabfoot" were both too harsh sounding for my taste -- Think I liked "Mermaid" best -- like Donovan with cool violins -- I liked their playfulness. Ultimately, though, a little too over the top for me sometimes, a little too blues based at other times. Two fun entries to start our little contest off. Jethro42 09.15.17	I don't know anything about Chicago, except for their radio hits. Same for Grateful Dead. When you face off with a new listen such as The Flock, without having no reference at all with any other bands, it's hard to be objective in opinions while listening. I mean, if I was familiar with Chicago for instance, I could appreciate more The Flock, probably. That band sounds unique to my ears, but it's not necessarily a good thing when I have no other bands in reference. Their first album is def better btw.
Divaman 09.15.17	A lot of the lit I've read over the last few days on The Flock references both Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears, but based on this album, I'd say that even if you were more familiar with those two bands, it would only help just so much with a frame of reference. Based on this album, I'd say The Flock is more weird and more eclectic than either of those two bands. As for The Grateful Dead, it's just a trace I hear in The Flock. But the Dead have a bunch of strong vocal harmonies (at least on their studio work), and better songwriting.

Sabrutin 09.15.17	If anyone's interested Chicago's 70s stuff is definitely worth hearing. The debut album especially is a must listen for anyone who loves adventurous music. Anything up until (and including) Chicago VII is worth a listen in my opinion, and the albums are quite unpredictable. For example VI was their friendlier album yet but then VII turned out to be their most experimental since the early days. If you want to wash the radio hits flavour off your mouth check the track called "Devil's Sweet" EDIT: SirLord kinda beat me to it

Friday13th 09.15.17	One of the best things about prog is the variety of instrument "voicings", and the same thing goes for the singers. Character of a singer's voice is very important imo, and prog has a variety of immediately identifiable voices. They're not all Freddie Mercury, but even an average-ranged singer like Ian Anderson is so distinctive and adds to the unique flavor of the mix.

wham49 09.15.17	The reference to Flock sounding like the Dead is something that I first thought of when listening to the band, more early 70's Dead where they fused folk/country rock with psych and jazz, they just have that sound of what comes from fusing those forms of music, and since the Dead are my alltime fave's and I like early CHicago it hit for me, almodt like a 30"s spiritual under the tent a little of this and that, old timey flavor too it
wham49 09.15.17	yes Sub the first Chicago transit authority is where it is at, the jazz rock thing is at its mainstream pinnacle on this, it jumped the shark at some point 5-6 years later, but at its best the jazz rock thing was great

Divaman 09.15.17	Off topic again, but I've got another prog rock rec some of you might like. Frogg Cafe. They're from my home town of Long Island, NY, and over the last decade and a half, they've made a nice little reputation for themselves in American prog rock circles. I recommended them to Jethro a few months back, and he really liked them. I find that they have moments of sublime beauty, although, a lot of the time, they're too jazzy for me. But I'm proud of the national rep they've created for themselves, even if parts of their music aren't really my cup of tea.
Jethro42 09.15.17	@Diva; The only things that put jazzy ingredients in Frogg Cafe are the horns, and they aren't that much insistant. Band is really creative, in the vein of Univers Zero imo, if you know them, and it also reminds me of Miriodor. The latter is still more leaning towards jazz though. Univers Zero is more from the - eclectic - prog side of the equation. I'm listening to the last Frogg Cafe album atm, and I still enjoy them a lot. I'm really happy you showed me these guys :)

It was straight forward rock and roll songs. Nothing close to Jethro Tull, except for ''Skating Away''. But I haven't heard the whole album.

Jethro42 09.17.17	Ok, it's more exactly ''The Sound Stylistics''. I loved some parts of it a lot, but for some reasons, I had hard time to listen to it from start to finish. I guess I can't stand ''pure'' funk stuff for too long. My favorites in the genre are Screaming Headless Torsos, probably because they dilute their funk with jazz-rock and a bit of prog.

bgillesp 09.17.17	801- 801 Live (1976): some sections a bit overlong without enough development, great bass lines, some really great playing overall too, some fun lyrics, you really got me cover was meh, 3.9/5 The Flock- Dinosaur Swamps (1970): not a fan of the backup chipmunks, I like the jazzy notes, so much variety to keep it interesting but there were parts that just didn't work (like featuring Alvin or the last track's chorus), 3.7/5 Close Call but 801 gets my vote

e210013 09.18.17	After four very attentive hearings of both albums, I have my final veredict. First, I must say that I never heard anything about the existence of the album of The Flock. Second, I knew the existence of the album of 801 and I even listen to it before, but for many years I lost any kind of contacts with it. Unfortunatelly I haven't a copy of it in my collection. About both albums: The Flock - Dinosaur Swamps: I must confess that I like very much the album and it was a really surprise for me. It's better than I thought in the first sight. This is an album very fun but it's not my style. It sounds too much to the 60's, and I'm not a great fan of the 60's. By the other hand it also has too much influences of country, which I'm not a great fan too. Still, the album is full of playful music. I'm sure these guys seemed to have fun doing what they do, which is great, ranging very styles of music, probably too much, on the same record. But it even sounds to me too much dated too. So and in short, despite all I said before, I think this is a very good album. I rated it with 3.5. 801 - 801 Live: This is one of the best live albums of the 70's, a trully classic. It has an amazing line up. It's hard to talk about all of them. I should have to write many lines to talk about the qualities of all the musicians involved. But, above all, it's a real pleasure to have the opportunity to hear such great gifted prog artists, together. The production of the album is irreproachable and the bass line on it is really incredible. It has also a terrific rythm section all over it and has some of my favourite prog artists, too. All in all, this is a classic live album from the 70's. I rated it with 4.5. So, my vote goes to 801 Live. Cheers, and congratulations for this prog tourney, Friday 13th.

Some next steps I suggest to anyone who wants more digs is Phil Manzanera's first album and Eno's first 3 albums to hear 801 Live songs in a different context. Friday13th has a good flair for matching up two ''compatible'' albums together. He has the knack for it. Score could have been tighter than this if people would give The Flock few more spins.

wham49 09.18.17	congrats sir Lord, Great album you brought to the table. After I heard it I knew I was in trouble. The FLock does closer represent the music I listen to. Not really country but the 60's country rock like neil Young and the Dead or Crosby Stils nash and Young kinda stuff, which is the stuff I grew up on. 801 is a great album, but for me, it is too clean. If that makes any sense. Anyway I hope I turned a couple people on to other forms of Prog and to know where I come from when I say the 70"s was the best, dudes just went for it, and I love that.
