03.04.16 | I'm halfway through Arachnoid and I can already tell that this is going to be a tough choice to make. |
Friday13th
03.04.16 | lol trve biased much? |
trve
03.04.16 | not really, i just hate the french language, the music itself is pretty damn good
all that léle is just too annoying for me to enjoy the album |
Friday13th
03.04.16 | It's probably not the easiest language to learn. I only speak English and Spanish, but from what I've learned of French it combines the inconsistent spelling of English and the verb conjugation/gender concordance of Spanish. Most people like the way French sounds though. I do prefer listening to Italian. |
trve
03.04.16 | well i had to endure 4 years of french in school, with a horrible teacher
so you can probably blame her |
Jethro42
03.04.16 | French from Québec (my hometown) is harder to understand because of its peculiar accent and expressions that often come from English. French from France is more refined and has a driest pronunciation. The latter can be irritating to me both in a physical conversation and in a musical context. The sung French from Québec is more melodious, more warm and less dry. A good example of this is Harmonium.
Anyway I don't particularly pay attention to the lyrics. Not at the forefront. Music is the universal language after all. |

03.05.16 | Here we go again . . . |
Cimnele
03.05.16 | noice, haven't heard the Duffard disc, was it even ever on mutant sounds? I always used to look there for weird-ass zeuhl/chamber prog releases lol |
Friday13th
03.05.16 | @Cimnele Never heard of mutant sounds. So it's an obscure prog blog? Sounds cool. Most of this stuff is on Prog Archives and RateYourMusic which I use a lot. |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.05.16 | the pascal duffard album is incredible; probably one of my fave prog albums ever. its very groundbreaking too. there's a couple moments on it thats like techno music being played on organic instruments, pretty gnarly and insane for the time. not to mention many parts are just incredibly beautiful |
Cimnele
03.05.16 | yeah it was mutant sounds on blogspot. Most of the files aren't there anymore since it was mostly rapidshare and megaupload based, lol, but they had prog, post-punk, industrial, weird Japan, the most out-there library music... about half of the over all blurbs mentioned either Wire or the Residents, that sort of thing. |
Friday13th
03.05.16 | Nice, yeah the Residents are fun. Hey, if you want some weird stuff look up Harry Partch "US Highball". Basically Frank Zappa in the '50s! |

03.05.16 | 1's cover artwork makes me want to check it out first. Plus, it's on Spotify. |

03.05.16 | Hey, it's on youtube now: https://youtu.be/n4gOwb2boM0 |
Jethro42
03.05.16 | 'Action Reaction' from Dieu est Fou sounds so oppressive with its crazy bass lines and desperate voices and screams that come and go. It really sounds like an exorcism :) I want it to finish and yet I want some more. So far, I'm digging 'Être' and 'Au Fond de mes Yeux'. Album has some great passages in every songs. It also can be too quirky in places ('Dieu est Fou' for instance).
As for Arachnoide, the opener is a fantastic song. I need to give more spins to both albums. |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.05.16 | i heard one song off of youtube and then found the whole album somewhere online and dl'd it
glad to see its all on youtube now |

03.06.16 | "why the fuck did they degrade a genius album with a language like that"
I agree French sounds very raw, cold and, in sum, quite unpleasant, on the record. But really, it's especially due to the singer's style and peculiar tone. French is a very melodious language, in fact - not as much as Italian, I grant you that, Friday - if you try listening to, for example, classic French singer-songwriters such as Léo Ferré, Jacques Brel or Brassens.
But in the end, I think it's very much a matter of perception. French is my mother tongue after all - I wouldn't see why I'd be biased, but still, I might be - and I can be bugged by other languages in music at times, because each has specific qualities and sonorities that add up to music in its distinct way.
I think the way a specific language can affect music is an interesting topic, especially regarding prog, in which vocals play a role much more closer to instrumentation than usually in popular music. |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.06.16 | french is godly
italian is godly
i dont know either but they can elevate music to an otherworldly plane (for me); i think language adds an interesting take on music, but if the music is beautiful, what language it is in doesn't matter |
gagnonov
03.07.16 | Brel was Belgian though
both albums looking veeeeeeeery good |
smaugman
03.07.16 | actually, french and italian are pretty languages, it's just french is fucked up. they have exceptions for exceptions ffs |
SCREAM!
03.07.16 | Damn I understand why no oen has voted yet...This round is tough |
TwigTW
03.07.16 | After the first listen I'm leaning towards 1, but I can tell I've only scratched the surface of 2 so anything can still happen. |
Friday13th
03.07.16 | I think I'm leaning towards 2 even if it's a bit overbearing at times. Both great yeah. |
Jethro42
03.07.16 | 2 can be weird here and there, but it contains more meat than 1 which is pretty much a perpetual synthesizer jam. I really love its opener song ''Le Chamadere'', probably my fave one out of these two albums. ''La Guêpe'' and the bonus track ''L'hiver'' are great too. But Dieu est Fou grew on me at a high speed. Probably a 4.5 worthy. |
Jethro42
03.07.16 | So yes, despite its collage-like sounding, and its stops and starts moments, and its craziness everywhere, Dieu Est Fou kind of seduced me. There is high quality music to be found, and i love the singer's lines, and he knows how to sing. The arrangements suit his vocals well. So, Dieu Est Fou gets my vote. |
SCREAM!
03.07.16 | I'm with twig atm. Leaning towards 1 but I feel like I need to give 2 a few more spins for it to be fair. |
SCREAM!
03.08.16 | So yeah, after careful consideration I'm giving it to 1. 2 is great and some of it's moments are breathtaking but it goes a little too all over the place for my liking and I find it inconsistent in parts.
1 consistently great front to back with the it's whacky yet eery atmosphere. |
Friday13th
03.08.16 | Cool, I'm voting Duffard which starts this off at 1:2 |
gagnonov
03.09.16 | i've yet to listen to 1, but Dieu est Fou is nasty |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.09.16 | Dieu est fou is the best!!! |
Friday13th
03.09.16 | It does have especially cool instrumentation. Some of the percussion is kind of like Krautrockish, motorik stuff. |
gagnonov
03.09.16 | i love this tournament thingy, some gems on here i listen to on a regular basis i would've never heard of otherwise.. salute |
TwigTW
03.09.16 | The first time I listened to Dieu est fou it was a bit off-putting, but it's growing on me. Have to see how much it grows by Friday. |
gagnonov
03.09.16 | my vote goes to Dieu est Fou |
SCREAM!
03.09.16 | you guys are fou |
Friday13th
03.09.16 | haha Fou prog 1:3 |
Jethro42
03.09.16 | prog fou :) In French, the adjective comes after the noun. Nothing to help haha.
As for Arachnoid, I wish it contained more songs like ''Le Chamadere'' and ''L'Hiver''. |
Friday13th
03.09.16 | I didn't listen to the bonus tracks actually. I think it's only fair to not include them. But yeah, the first song of Arachnoid is the best. |
SCREAM!
03.09.16 | Yeah I usually stop the album when the bonus tracks come on and I think it benefits from it |
Jethro42
03.09.16 | Yeah, to be more objective, I excluded them when I did my choice. |
Friday13th
03.09.16 | It definitely pains me to vote against Arachnoid. Listening now and I'm sure it will stay a jam after the contest. |
Onirium
03.10.16 | While both albums are unique and interesting experiments - as a lot of music from the French prog scene - I'm voting for Dieu est Fou as well. I find its adventurous nature more appealing, and while Arachnoid has superb moments, it's a bit less cohesive and consistent. |
Friday13th
03.10.16 | 1:4 Alright guys, start bringing the votes in. |
MrSirLordGentleman
03.10.16 | My vote goes to Arachnoid, I really think Pascal tries too hard at some points |
Friday13th
03.10.16 | 2:4 |
Jethro42
03.10.16 | I think Pascal stays sober himself with his piano. I find that he overuses the operatic and crazy female voices throughout the album, and it's the main let down on here. He could have used more cello instead, or something.
''Être'' and above all ''Porte-Moi De L'Eau, Marie'' are the highlights to me. |
Jethro42
03.10.16 | Also ''Au Fond De Mes Yeux'' is great, mostly when Pascal sings alone, only accompanied by his piano. |
Friday13th
03.10.16 | Yeah totally agree, Jethro. |
Jethro42
03.10.16 | And in the song ''Dieu Est Fou'', I find it spectacular the way he both sings and plays the piano at a high speed simultaneously. I'm not sure, but I think we call it an arpeggio. He does it couple of times. So nice! |
Friday13th
03.10.16 | Yeah I know that part it does sound cool. It's not an arpeggio though, an arpeggio is just a chord with the notes played separately. |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.10.16 | I dont really find Dieu est fou inaccessible at all, and I cant personally understand how it is too exaggerated or anything like that; its mostly beautiful melodies. and when its not, it sounds like a badass alien opera. Every second is just straight up "oh hell yeah" |
Onirium
03.10.16 | There's something catchy - in an uncanny way - on Dieu est Fou in Trois Millions d'Années, and at various places throughout the album |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.10.16 | I can certainly agree with that |
tmthycnnlly
03.10.16 | I give my vote to Arachnoid, Dieu est Fou was just too much for me |

03.10.16 | good lord I didn't have the time to listen to these albums properly and there's only 2 days left |

Sabrutin
03.10.16 | Eh I too have found little time and it doesn't help the fact that both albums seem really great. I'd say that 2 has a little edge on oomph though. |
TwigTW
03.10.16 | When I first listened to Feu all I could hear was that woman screaming, but now I hear a lot more is going on. I like the structure of the piece: chaos/control, insanity/humanity, loud/soft. It has gotten to where I like it a little more than one, so my vote goes to 2.
Sorry scream |

03.11.16 | An album needs to pass 8 votes to be declared the winner, but yeah I'll start the new one. |

03.11.16 | OK, vote goes to 1 even though I'm guilty of voting without checking both albums more than once. I promise to make amends during the next round. |

03.11.16 | I still haven't checked either album in full thanks to exams happening this week
if you extend this round I'll be able to vote then |
