02.26.16 | I think the face on 2 is a close-up of the guy on 1 but I didn't know how to make a good joke of that. |
Jethro42
02.26.16 | You're usually good at it :) I'd have an idea, but only in French ... |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.26.16 | Checked these two yesterday, for now I'm leaning more towards Waiters, but I still need to listen to them more |
manosg
02.26.16 | Sweet. Commenting so as to remember to check. |
AnimalsAsSummit
02.26.16 | Can't wait to jam, both look very quality |

02.26.16 | Julian Jay Savarin Trivia:
- Moved from Dominica to UK in 1962
- Released two prog albums in the early 70s, one under the name Julian's Treatment
- Gave up music and became a writer
- Savarins first two books are science-fiction epics based on the same concepts as his prog albums
From Wikipedia:
As a writer, Julian Savarin is best known for his science fiction trilogy Lemmus: A Time Odyssey, which also serves as the basis for the two concept albums by the musical group of Julian's Treatment. The first work in the series, Waiters on the Dance(1972), tells of the Galactic organisation and dominions, which existed long before earth's historic times. There are three primary, sometimes interwoven, threads to the story, played against the backdrop of the mighty but allegedly benevolent G.O.D. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.26.16 | Vocals in Waiters are so, so, soooooooo good |
Friday13th
02.26.16 | That's some interesting stuff, TWIG. Might even make us...read books. |
TwigTW
02.26.16 | Still one copy left on Amazon ;-) |
Sabrutin
02.26.16 | Checking Stark Naked now. |
TwigTW
02.26.16 | On a more musical note . . . Savarin's vocalist, Jo Meek, is the sister of the singer for the prog band Catapilla (Anna Meek). |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.26.16 | Well that explains a lot, what's in the genes of that family omg |
smaugman
02.26.16 | i always have a harder time getting into albums that have few ratings dunno why |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.26.16 | well now that's poser |
Sabrutin
02.26.16 | Definitely enjoyed Stark Naked, the opening song is a bomb. |
TwigTW
02.26.16 | First listen to Naked, so far so good, Done, Look Again, and Wasted Time are great. |
smaugman
02.26.16 | dunno, stark naked guitar sounds like poop |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.26.16 | nah, sounds pretty cool |
TwigTW
02.26.16 | Sounds like the 70s to me |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.26.16 | which is awesome |
smaugman
02.26.16 | poop i tell you |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.26.16 | for someone that thinks that Tubular Bells is also poop, it is logical |
smaugman
02.26.16 | fair enough : ) |
MeatSalad
02.27.16 | 1 is great so far |
SCREAM!
02.27.16 | 1 is great so far[2] |
TwigTW
02.27.16 | Interesting that both albums came out in the same year (1971), between the decades. Naked sounds like it's looking forward to the 70s, while Waiters is looking back at the 60s. |
zakalwe
02.27.16 | sunhouse |
MeatSalad
02.27.16 | 2 is cool too, rocks
lyrics are kinda eh though |
MeatSalad
02.27.16 | really dig the piano especially |
MeatSalad
02.27.16 | ah dude, both of these are really good. i have no idea which to vote for but now i'm super stoked for the rest of this |
Jethro42
02.27.16 | The first one is kind of a psyche jam rock, and I am hard to please when it comes to that style of music. Not enough melodic, not enough defined structures. And it's like if it was an unique long song from start to finish to me. Musicianship is great though, and the vocals are so so soooooo good :) Need to relisten to validate my impressions. |
Jethro42
02.27.16 | I feel it's gonna be tight between the two. Not much prog to be found in the 2nd one. It makes me rather think of Steppenwolf and stuff. |
Onirium
02.27.16 | There's something very unsettling about Naked's artwork
1 is pleasant so far, the jam-based acid rock spirit is interesting. Perhaps it's just that the singer's voice is extremely similar to Annie Haslam's, but I hear many similarities in vocal melodies with Renaissance on the record. And that's not detrimental to Savarin's identity, especially considering it was released a few years before Renaissance's defining albums. |
SharkTooth
02.27.16 | Naked's artwork reminds me of that "Scream" painting |
Onirium
02.27.16 | It's supposed to evoke a dissected vulva isn't it? |
Onirium
02.27.16 | On another hand the music's hard rock tendencies are nice. The record feels more progressive in its structure than its music itself |
MeatSalad
02.27.16 | "Not much prog to be found in the 2nd one. It makes me rather think of Steppenwolf and stuff."
I dunno, I thought there was some pretty obvious prog stuff going on. Especially with the piano passages. Definitely separates itself from otherwise being a really solid psych record |
manosg
02.27.16 | Checked Waiters on the Dance. Great keyboard work and vocals. Excellent album overall. |
SCREAM!
02.27.16 | So with two listens each it's an easy vote for 1 for me. The more prog leanings along with the beautiful Haslam-esque vocals make make it an album worthy to stand along with some of the greats.
That being said, I very much enjoyed 2 as well but the more straight forward psych rock approach just doesn't resonate with me as much. Great album nonetheless though! |
TwigTW
02.27.16 | Luckily this isn't an album cover contest. I think they would both lose. |
SharkTooth
02.27.16 | Utopia would prob be the winner then |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.27.16 | Asylum has the best artwork in the contest |
TwigTW
02.27.16 | I'd probably vote for the Utopia. |
Jethro42
02.27.16 | And what about the baby smoking a cigar on the back of a stork... |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.27.16 | I'm the biggest Hipgnosis fan there is, and Asylum's cover really reminds me of that style |
TwigTW
02.27.16 | Didn't even notice the cigar, lol . . . Hipgnosis are the best. I can't think of anyone else that even comes close. |
Jethro42
02.27.16 | Roger Dean who covered the Yes albums, TWIG. |
SharkTooth
02.27.16 | dunno about anyone else but I'm not really digging the female vox on the third track to Stark Naked |
TwigTW
02.27.16 | Roger Dean, that's right! |
Jethro42
02.27.16 | Hipgnosis seem to have a huge collection of great cover arts, really. |
Jethro42
02.27.16 | After a few listens each, Savarin is gaining some points, and Stark Naked is losing some. Savarin is more of my style, despite it's raw, unpolished finition and lack of defined structures and melody. Stark Naked contains few good moments, but to me, it's not progressive at all. Slightly psychedelic maybe, but mostly a straight forward rock'n roll album with good ideas here and there, but consistency speaking, not enough for me.
Savarin gets my vote. |
TwigTW
02.27.16 | Hipgnosis did all those great Floyd covers, but also Genesis,Zepplin, Etc. They were everywhere. |
TwigTW
02.27.16 | @Sharktooth: I prefer the male vocalist, but the vocals overall are what I like best about that album. |
Jethro42
02.27.16 | ok I see, TWIG. I'm gonna investigate for fun. |
MeatSalad
02.27.16 | I'll have to listen to both again but I'm actually leaning towards 2 right now |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.27.16 | Stark Naked gives me a Captain Beyond vibe |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.27.16 | My vote goes to Savarin |
SharkTooth
02.27.16 | I'm gonna go with 1, while 2 is more my kind of music, the album drags on a bit near the end while the first is consistently interesting |
AnimalsAsSummit
02.28.16 | i vote jj savarin all the way |
Friday13th
02.28.16 | Great album, TWIG. I'll be checking Tony Stark Naked tomorrow. XD |
SharkTooth
02.28.16 | Both albums are def worth listening to |
Sabrutin
02.28.16 | Really enjoying 1 too.
Both albums are def worth listening to [2] |
Friday13th
02.28.16 | "Wasted Time" on 2 is great. |
Sabrutin
02.28.16 | I really like "All of Them Witches", "Done" and "Iceberg". That said I think I might vote for Savarin's because I find it more consistently awesome. |
MeatSalad
02.29.16 | Yeah wasted time is a fantastic tune |
Onirium
02.29.16 | If ever you want to discuss this very obscure band Yes:
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=165145&memberid=1042401 |
SharkTooth
02.29.16 | Never heard of them, are they prog? |
Onirium
02.29.16 | They have been in the past, like you know, in the 70s or something, but recently they've become obscure and experimental. They're currently working on redefining the whole soft rock genre, pushing it to an extreme level of boredom, but it's really an avant-garde move, I don't know if you'd get it |
SharkTooth
02.29.16 | That seems pretty far out there, they should collaborate with Death Grips |
TwigTW
02.29.16 | "really an avant-garde move, I don't know if you'd get it
ha, ha, I didn't--so wanted to tho. |
Onirium
02.29.16 | Oh yeah, I've certainly pictured some hip-hop grooves here and there |
Onirium
02.29.16 | On a more serious note, my vote goes to Savarin. Despite its incohesive moments, the adventurous nature of the songs beats the austere and straightforward tone of Stark Naked to me. |
Jethro42
02.29.16 | Hey cap'n, while it's too late to participate, you can always listen to the albums and ultimately vote for your favorite. |
Sabrutin
02.29.16 | Glad to be spending time with both albums, but right now I really think I will go with Savarin. Short, sweet and highly replayable. All killer, even the short Soldiers of Time and Stranger are very enjoyable. |
Friday13th
03.01.16 | Alright, I'll start the tallying. It's a depressing 6:0 right now, but we still have a few days for the Stark Naked fans to catch up. |
MeatSalad
03.01.16 | i'll vote for 2, fuck it |
gagnonov
03.01.16 | small edge to 1 |
Friday13th
03.02.16 | Okay I'm voting Savarin. Current score is 8:1. Still waiting on Fripp, Gentleman, bnelso, TWIG, Mythodea, manosg and zakalwe. To clarify, anyone who shows interest and listens to both albums can vote. I'm talking to you wham, eaglefan, beefshoes, and smaugman! |
MrSirLordGentleman
03.02.16 | I said that my vote goes to Savarin days ago :v |
zakalwe
03.02.16 | Going to stick with 2 |
Friday13th
03.03.16 | @Gentleman you're right, missed it! New score: 9:2 |
manosg
03.03.16 | Vote goes to 1 even though Stark Naked is great. |
TwigTW
03.03.16 | I like Naked, been humming those songs all week, but my vote goes to Savarin. Loving the keyboard/vocalist combo. |
Friday13th
03.03.16 | 11:2 |
bnelso55
03.03.16 | Both records are fun. Might have to give it to 1 this time around though. |
Friday13th
03.03.16 | 12:2 okay just Fripp and Mythodea left. |
MrSirLordGentleman
03.03.16 | You could start the next round now, since the winner is obvious in here |
Friday13th
03.04.16 | They have to start on Friday! |
Frippertronics
03.04.16 | I can get both these down by midnight, in which I'll presume is the deadline. Been carefully listening to these over the week to be fair. |
Friday13th
03.04.16 | It's not right at midnight but I do expect all the votes sometime tomorrow before the new one is up. |
Frippertronics
03.04.16 | hopefully Utopia is up next :^) |
