12.18.14 | The Obscure Prog Tournament is for anyone who’s into acquiring the taste for relatively unknown progressive rock albums. Trust me. This is less pretentious than you’d think. If you want to be a contestant, nominate the progressive rock album you think is an underrated classic by posting it on these comments with a short description of why it’s awesome. After the 16 contestant slots have been filled, everyone can still participate by voting each round. |
Friday13th
12.18.14 | Just follow these 4 rules devised for your benefit. Remember, knowledge is a deadly friend if no one sets the rules!
Rule #1: The 16 contestants are in this for the long-haul. The crime of the century would be to only participate when everyone is hearing “your” album and then leave when it’s eliminated. Don’t be that pig. Be mister class and quality :]
Rule #2: Nominated albums must have less than 30 user ratings on sputnikmusic, must be readily accessible online, and can’t be repeats from my two previous contests.
Rule #3: You are required by the Crimson King’s honor system to have heard both albums before voting
Rule #4: Alt accounts are not permitted and will be caught.
|
Friday13th
12.18.14 | There will be two phases. The first is the “Discovery Phase,” which will be a series of 8, one-on-one competitions in which you are introduced to the contesting albums. The Discovery Phase will last 24 days, giving you 3 days each round to hear both albums and vote which is better. The “Elimination” Phase” is simple. Once we have collectively heard every album in the tournament, there will be 3 rounds pitting the previous winners head-to-head and leading to the final match.
The tournament should last a total of 33 days, but leave room for error due to uncontrollable events like sputnik going down for a day.

12.18.14 | Sweet. Thanks for doing this once again Friday. My suggestion is:
Finch (NL) - Glory of the Inner Force
Because it represents all that is good about 70s prog. |
Jethro42

Onirium
12.18.14 | Jan Dukes de Grey - Mice and Rats in the Loft
Remnants of 60s psychedelic folk clashing with a mad, malevolent and semi-improvised prog, ending up as, perhaps, one of early prog's most interesting experiments. |
Friday13th
12.18.14 | nice, just 6 left |
Onirium
12.19.14 | Really looking forward to this, the albums here sound even more interesting than in the first edition |

Frippertronics
12.19.14 | busy being you.
all the stuff up to The Spell is on soundcloud. get on it man |
MeatSalad
12.19.14 | ye I think I downloaded it off your soundcloud however long ago, just been sitting on my hard drive for months |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.19.14 | oh my god do not include that white arms of athena bullshit |
Frippertronics
12.19.14 | yeah I'd hold off on that. the stream isn't 320, so I may replace it with a better quality version. I'll keep the outtakes though, since it's from the recent box set. Though now is a good time to try out Something Wicked since this contest practically requires you to hear it.
Won't be surprised if it goes out the first round, it's a middle-of-the-road sort of album, some will love it, some will think little of it. |
Frippertronics
12.19.14 | never mind |
MeatSalad
12.19.14 | also agreed with potsy that shit has no place here |
HenchmanOfSanta
12.19.14 | I probably won't actually vote in this tourney but I nominate Los Jaivas - Alturas de Macchu Pichu. Excellent prog mixed with Andean folk music. |
Frippertronics
12.19.14 | has over 30 ratings |
Friday13th
12.19.14 | ...and a repeat. That's breaking two rules...three if you don't participate lol |
Friday13th
12.19.14 | @OwMySnauze gimme a description of the album |
OwMySnauze
12.19.14 | @Pots what's wrong with suggesting the new WAOA? It's definitely prog and is surprisingly good. I did not have high hopes for it but it really caught me off guard how good it is.
@Fri13 an ambient yet hard hitting prog metal album with great vocal delivery. They really changed up their sound from their previous debut album, Astrodrama |
Friday13th
12.19.14 | Dang it, he cleared the hurdle :p
"Great vocal delivery" wouldn't happen to involve metalcore screaming? I'm not here to second guess it for its quality. Who knows, I may like it. Just think if you know any other albums people 'round here would be likely to enjoy more considering the above list. |
SharkTooth
12.19.14 | problem is that it sticks out like a sore thumb, almost every other album on this list is classic 70's
prog how do you compare metalcore prog with classic prog? it's just weird tbh |
Friday13th
12.19.14 | Sorry guys...being Solomon the wise here isn't easy. |
MeatSalad
12.19.14 | yeah
it's not really obscure either like the rest of these, I mean it does fit your criteria but their debut has over 60 votes |
Friday13th
12.19.14 | Well Mr. Snauze, I won't force you to change it, but keep in mind I expect everyone competing to listen to
all the albums and vote. If 70s prog isn't your thing, it had better be by the end of this tourney ;] |
OwMySnauze
12.19.14 | Have any of you actually listened to it? There's like 10 seconds of screams total in the whole album. Don't understand the "metalcore" label for it. Can't judge it by the album artwork. Total disservice to the music.
But if the rules state somewhere that only 70s and 80s prog is permitted, then so be it |
SharkTooth
12.19.14 | that's not the rules, the question is tho:how the hell do you compare them??? |
Friday13th
12.19.14 | Naw brah, I very well may be misjudging it. It's not limited to 70s and 80s so you're fine. |
MeatSalad
12.19.14 | i'm just judging the band in general based off their debut snauze, i haven't heard this new one yet but i will since it's in the competition now |
OwMySnauze
12.19.14 | Yeah I know what you mean meatsalad. Trust me, it's a complete departure from their debut.
@fri13 sounds good, I plan on it! |
MeatSalad
12.19.14 | glad you finally decided to do this shit again friday, ill try my best to keep up with the rounds this time as opposed to pretty much every other time |
Mad.
12.19.14 | Anubis - Hitchhiking To Byzantium
It takes a while to get into, so don't judge it on a first listen, but once you get into it you'll realise it's a beautiful, subtly layered
tribute to the gods with some truly incredible guitar and vocal work. |
menawati
12.19.14 | ow nice, I'll try and think of something |
TwigTW
12.19.14 | Looks like there are still open slots, so if it is not too late:

12.19.14 | Damn, sorry change it to
Alusa Fallax - Intorno Alla Mia Cattiva Educazione
(one album wonder from Italian prog band in 1974, bit like PFM etc lots of flute and classical influences) |
Friday13th
12.19.14 | BEHOLD, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE PROG! |
JJKeys
12.19.14 | If it's not too late:
Dream the Electric Sleep - nu-prog from this year, as conceptual and progressive as the next prog band but as accessible as any given alt rock band; all this with a spectacular vocal flair. One of the finer albums from this year |
JJKeys
12.19.14 | *Dream the Electric Sleep - Heretics

12.19.14 | Sorry bro, I'm doing 16. If in the rare case someone drops out, I'll let you know and put it in. |

samsquanch
12.26.14 | Thats my vote. I think they deserve some cred for trying to develop a unique sound and identity. Considering their first album was a btbam rip, they've made some drastic changes. |
samsquanch
12.26.14 | oh.. just read rules, thought it was out of all 16. |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | yeah dude, you can wait around till its round comes, but you have to hear what it's going up against before you vote. |
