| Top Picks Of January 2014
These are my top picks and favorites thus far for the year 2014 and rthe first month of rrrrrthe year - January 2014. I have included a sample rlink to each item. | 13 | | The Visit Between Worlds
This album is only 1 song, and its a 14 minute long song. Do not let this
dissuade you from giving it a fair listen. I guess you might call this
progressive classical? Very complex music made with very simplistic tools. A
very impressive piece of musical composition.

Undoubtedly one of the strangest things I have ever heard.
sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk1qjjU9jQc | 8 | | Mogwai Rave Tapes
Sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfdqzVYt8Do | 7 | | Have a Nice Life The Unnatural World
Haunting and depressing Industrial, drone, shoegaze, noise rock, and sort of a
pop feel to all of it. Have given this a ton of listens and finally decided that I
do in fact like this, it was a serious grower though.
sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqHTa561Ua0 | 6 | | Dang Tartarus: The Darkest Realm
Progressive stoner rock based around the theme of Greek Mythology.
Not the most unique or original theme ever but the execution was flawless IMO.
Very fun listen, I haven't actually been able to acquire this album yet, only listen
to it's stream on Terrorizer.com.

Linked here is both my review of Shelter, and a sample for those curious.

The solid and seamless of post rock, post punk, and perhaps a bit of folk
come to fruition on the jubilant and extremely fun 'FOGFWPLOE'. While I must
admit that band names and album titles that long tend to carry a bit of
pretension, on some occasions the bands music is strong enough to back that
pretension with substance. Silver Mt. Zion's new album meets this challenge
and conquers ? to craft an album that can stand side by side with their scope
and vision.

I haven't heard very much metal yet this year, and what I have heard, I haven't
been very sure of. The very much hyped Murmur self title'd album was
something I had a very difficult time wrapping my head around. The new Iced
Earth was formulaic and depressing. I much preferred the absolutely raw and
psychedelic crushing riffs of Aeonian, in which the winning formula of sludge /
stoner is maximized to full effect with spacy distorted jams. Aeonian is nothing
short of a transcendental experience. I've gone ahead and linked to a sample for the album that I feel best
characterizes Aeonian.
Sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJOHXGrBFKA | 2 | | Warpaint Warpaint
Much like Bohren & der Club of Gore, Warpaint was actually not a band I was familiar
with prior to this year, and when I saw this album being discussed on Sputnik, I
decided to give it a listen. I am so impressed with this minimalist indie / post punk /
trip hop / sort of shoegazey flavor of rock, very reminiscent of something I might
hear from Blue States, Team Sleep, or Massive Attack, to throw three completely
random unrelated names out there.
Sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZgNBSkaTQQ | 1 | | Bohren & der Club of Gore Piano Nights
Bohren & der Club of Gore was not a musical project I was familiar with prior to
2014 and the subsequent release of Piano Nights. Upon hearing such a haunting,
surreal, dark, and ambient take on smooth jazz, I absolutely had to trek backwards
through the rest of the discography, and what I found did not disappoint. While I do
feel that Piano Nights may not have been as strong as some of their earlier material
to date, Piano Nights has earned its spot as my favorite item from January for the
sheer power of the moods it instills.

Trebor.
01.31.14 | Manners - Blue Light
Sport - Bon Voyage
Self Defense Family - Try Me
| Wadlez
01.31.14 | Bohren is class stuff | decoyoctopus
01.31.14 | Are those recommendations Trebor? I did listen to Self Defense Family, wasn't quite feeling it
honestly. | NordicMindset
01.31.14 | no they're albums you oughta stay away from man | Trebor.
01.31.14 | Manners is great pissed the fuck off melodic hardcore and Sport is punk/emo in the vein of like Grown Ups | NordicMindset
01.31.14 | stupid movie | decoyoctopus
01.31.14 | Ok lol. I've done my best to keep up with everything that's come out this year.
I wanted to like Murmur, cause I am a metalhead at heart, but idk just couldn't get into it. The Sunn O)) / Ulver collaboration album was very disappointing for me also, but if you guys feel I missed anything really important let me know I'll give it a listen and may edit my list before the month is all done. | NordicMindset
01.31.14 | I need to check Alcest | decoyoctopus
01.31.14 | You may not like it. Community was pretty divided over it, a lot of users didn't seem to care that it entirely abandoned all black metal influence and went entirely shoe-gaze / dream pop, but there are a few gems on there. I noticed some influences of Sigur Ros myself. | NordicMindset
01.31.14 | Black metal with shoegaze?
Sounds like Sunbather to me. | decoyoctopus
01.31.14 | No it was just straight shoe-gaze, they cut all black metal out entirely. | NordicMindset
01.31.14 | Probably will check soon | decoyoctopus
01.31.14 | Made a few small edits, since Nazca Lines isn't even on Sputnik.. or Youtube for that matter, I went ahead and chose iamthemorning's Miscellany Ep for that spot instead. | MalleusMaleficarum
01.31.14 | Aeonian seems interesting | decoyoctopus
01.31.14 | I've been listening to it on repeat for the past few days. It's heavy as hell, but not too monotonous or repetitive, they keep things mixed up nicely with lots of jams. | Mad.
01.31.14 | Came to rec Aeonian, didn't even need to m/ | ConorIsNotHere
01.31.14 | The Gloaming | ShitsofRain
01.31.14 | kathleen mae | AliW1993
01.31.14 | Not a great month, but then January is always slow...
Mogwai and Silver Mt. Vion have been my favourites so far, along with Against Me!'s 'Transgender Dysphoria Blues.' | omnipanzer
01.31.14 | oooh 1 | AliW1993
01.31.14 | Maybe I'm just in the mood for weird shit, but I'm really enjoying that Xiu Xiu record. | emester
01.31.14 | Hail Spirit Noire?
I kinda like 1 and 4 | GnarlyShillelagh
01.31.14 | is this ranked? got halfway through the bohren album a couple days ago but forgot to finish it but it was pretty great. hanl is my favorite of the year by far tho | decoyoctopus
02.01.14 | Yes. With Bohren being my favorite, and the Visit closing out the list. There were a number of new things in January I didn't really care for, so they didn't make this list. | wanderlust
02.02.14 | Bohren is awesome. Rave tapes was boring as fck thou | AmericanFlagAsh
02.03.14 | Warpaint yesssss |
