when i turned 3...when i gained sentience... | 10 | | Built To Spill Keep It Like a Secret
Is it right to call this power-pop? So much of this is built on walls of noise and sick guitar lines. It’s not too verbose, the lyrics always cut straight to the point and it feels real easy to scream along to them. Good shit
You Were Right, The Plan, Time Trap
3.9/5 | 9 | | Gustavo Cerati Bocanada
Good ol' guitar driven trip-hop. Beats stay busy, but melodies stick around. There's so much cool stuff going on here.
Engana, Beautiful, Aqui & Ahora
4/5 | 8 | | Autechre EP7
60 minute EP. Some really interesting experiments hiding in here - the alien rap on the second track it up lives in my head rent free
Ccec, Maphive 6.1, Netlon Sentinel
4/5 | 7 | | Haiku d'Etat Haiku d'Etat
Three MC’s spit smooth shit over jazzy licks and samples, makes for ample enjoyability, flows approach from angles unheard of for time time, but they can rhyme like the best of em
Slower Traffic to the Right, Studio Street Stage, Wants vs. Needs, Non Compos Mentis
4/5 | 6 | | Handsome Boy Modeling School So ... How's Your Girl?
What a collaboration. Prince Paul and Dan the Automator put on a masterclass in the creation of beats and finding the right rhymesayers to slot into each. Del thee funkee homosapien and El-P provide standout verses, and the skits - something i’m usually willing to skip - are actually really funny, especially when listened to in order.
Rock’n’roll (Could Never Hip-Hop Like This), Magnetizing, Megaton B-Boy 2000, Holy Calamity (Bear Witness II)
4/5 | 5 | | Nemo (Can) In Stereo
A massive wall of sound. Alt space rock with shoegaze levels of reverb. Last track drags, but it’s about, like, the atmosphere man
Bleary eyed Soul, Hyperdrive, Space Suit
4/5 | 4 | | Pet Shop Boys Nightlife
A cold and daunting PSB. The atmosphere’s fitting of its title - this is one for the clubs, for late night walks from the bar. For when the sun goes down.
I Don’t Know What You Want But I Can’t Give It Anymore, Boy Strange, Vampires
4.1/5 | 3 | | The Seatbelts Blue
Has the most emotionally effective tracks - Call Me Call me, See You Space Cowboy, Blue - and lots of fun to be had as well. Chicken Bone and Mushroom Hunting are all fun cheese, both evoking the wackier episodes of the series. All the instrumentals are great on here! All of the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks are solid in the end, but this one edges out the others for being so perfectly well rounded.
Blue, Call me Call Me, Autumn In Ganymede, Chicken Bone
4.5/5 | 2 | | Mr. Bungle California
Exciting and explosive, any Mr. Bungle record is one in which I never know whats going to happen next. The genre smashing is a little smoothed out here, but it works in the records favor. Theres not as much in terms of chaos or haphazardness (which feels insane to say about this record but thats mr. bungle), but you still don’t know what awaits around each corner.
None of them Knew They Were Robots, The Air-Conditioned Nightmare, Vanity Fair, Ars Moriendi
4.6/5 | 1 | | Date Of Birth Planet DOB
A Shibuya-Kei-styled Sweet Trip. Breakbeat, lounge, trip-hop, psychedelic sounds, and the occasional masterpiece of a pop song. A SEVERELY underrated gem. It’s on Youtube. Go listen to it.
How do you think?, sometimes i breathe, marshland, vow

10.09.24 | nice
gave 9 a cursory check a while ago and it kinda bounced off me, might revisit. 1 is on the list, super cool band | myri14
10.09.24 | I love 10 and 9, I like 8. Recently I've been on an unintended 1999 kick as well (just a coincidence), with Pinback's self titled, and Bogdan Raczynski's Samurai Math Beats and Thinking of You | oisincoleman64
