You pay a certain amount of money (it's never too expensive, don't worry) and get a multitude of games from all sorts of genres, and the money goes to charity. The majority of the games are online, such as my personal favorite Dungeon Defenders |

Acanthus

02.25.13 | Well late-2012 games, good benchmark games are Dishonored, Darksiders II, Blacklight Retribution, Planetside 2.

SIMBOLIC
02.25.13 | @Calc
provided you have a decent keyboard and mous and monitor, prob 1000-1200 depending on your motherboard, cpu etc., but you'd want at least a nvidia gtx 660 card to run 2012, maybe 660 ti or higher
If you want it to last years with minimal upgrading you want a motherboard with at least 4 slots (graphics card takes 2) and a power supply that can run sli

02.27.13 | 'League of Legends'
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA
DotA, SC2, and Rift is probably the best MMORPG out right now. Their class system is unparalleled, and makes for excellent gameplay (definitely a game that exists for the endgame, though). TERA was pretty okay; jaw-dropping graphics, and an interesting combat system, but really rather grindy and repetitive with a passable class system at best. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | League of legends is decent |
Winsomniac
02.27.13 | League of Legends is to DotA 2 as an ugly overpriced escort is to dating a nympho supermodel.
Seriously. Without even getting into how embarrassingly simplified and one-dimensional the gameplay is in comparison, completely ignoring the steam workshop system and that DotA 2 lets the community support the scene whereas League outright pays organizations to hold tournaments of their shoddy game as opposed to other ones, doesn't have an in-client replay and live game viewer, DotA 2 gives ALL gameplay-relevant content out at the start for free, and gives players the chance to get almost all cosmetic items for free, whereas League makes you pay for everything.
Do you have an Invoker? Do you have a Meepo? Chen/Enchantress? No. you have stale, repetitive gameplay with balance patches that aim to make every FPS-zombie-turned-sudden-tactically inclined wannabe strategist middle schooler feel like they're not doing anything wrong so as not to hurt their feelings and keep milking their parents' money.

Tyrael
02.27.13 | DotA, SC2, and Rift is probably the best MMORPG out right now.
Rift is a weak WoW clone with a worse community, yeah the class system is nice but fuck the grind.
SC2 is a nice game but blizzard refuses to fix its biggest issue: the zerg are horribly overpowered. This unbalance makes for a really frustrating multiplayer experience if you're not playing zerg. |
NationalRadio
02.27.13 | Runescape. Duh. Haha |
Winsomniac
02.27.13 | Have you seen HotS? Lol. Widow mines. Oracles. Zerg isn't imba. Also: KT.Flash.
RIFT's class system is completely unparalleled, and the community is what you make of it. The raiding guild I ended up progressing with was world-first competitive, but still very fun to be around outside of raiding hours. And what grind? 1-max took a week and a half, two weeks tops to get to Tier 1 raid-level gear, and from then on its all sweet, sweet endgame content.
@Hyperion DotA 2 is fun because it's mechanically easy, but challenging. SC2 is hard. I could play LoL with two fingers on each hand at a competitive level. That's not just easy; it's stale.
But seriously Tyrael. Flash. DROPS. DROPS MOTHAFUCKIN EVERYWHERE. |
Hyperion1001
02.27.13 | "1-max took a week and a half, two weeks tops to get to Tier 1 raid-level gear, and from then on its all sweet, sweet endgame content. "
thats not fun thats called grinding |
Winsomniac
02.27.13 | As opposed to WoW, where none of that existed? |
Hyperion1001
02.27.13 | you can turn literally any MMO into a grind by hitting level cap in a week |
Winsomniac
02.27.13 | I'm not sure you played any of the REALLY grind-intensive games to compare...
And if you want to be that nitpicky, almost everything is a grind; disguised in one way or another. SC2 laddering can be considered a grind, acquiring the skills needed to reach GM can certainly be tedious, to say the least. To me, at least, a true grind is when a single level takes well over 100 gameplay hours(korean grinders, man...).
So I guess its a matter of perspective? I'd definitely argue that almost all MMOs have at least some element of grinding that's implemented, if not integral. |
Hyperion1001
02.27.13 | if you hit level cap in a week youre not having fun its as simple as that
i got a cleric to about 40 in rift and it was fun (this was over the course of about 2 months) but after warhammer online died i just cant put energy into an MMO anymore |
Winsomniac
02.27.13 | I'm fairly sure that hitting level cap in a week means I was very much having fun, but just having it faster and harder than you were ;)
Also, it was summer break for me when I leveled, so I had very few commitments to attend to at the time, and a lot of free time. Maybe I would have gotten impatient otherwise? I tend to go very srs bsns when I mentally commit to doing something. If I decide to play something, I decide to play the absolute shit out of it.
|
Hyperion1001
02.27.13 | i guess that sounds reasonable, but that just sounds like it sucks the fun out of any game to me. i guess just different play styles
i want to get back into an MMO because college is a joke and i have money and a lot of free time but nothing really looks appealing

Tyrael
02.27.13 | Hyp I can recommend you GW2 even though Arenanet can't fucking balance their game
the PvE content is really fun, the combat is fluid and the world looks and feels amazing |
Winsomniac
02.27.13 | I've heard great things about DAoC, so should be cool. I had friends that were impossibly amped on GW2, convinced it was going to be the next great game, play it and get bored within 2 weeks.
Hyp: I would recommend you to spend your free time wisely. Dabble in whatever seems interesting(gaming or otherwise), commit to what you really enjoy, and see if you can get a feel for what brings you the most satisfaction. That way you'll know what specific traits you value in games (as well as life, really). I would really save as much money as I can though. As someone who spent too much and left too little in reserve in the past, it's really valuable to me. Which I guess is why DotA is such a good fit for me. I spend no money on it, have essentially earned a little chunk of digital assets I can sell for real money with the time I've spent doing something I enjoy in my free time, and type like a maniac now. |
