Atari
10.29.19 | hope everyone's doing well today. remember not to spend too much time in toxic threads! recs welcome ofc, this is all from 2019 except for Run the Jewels 2 |
Calc
10.29.19 | listen to arthur moon's latest. |
Relinquished
10.29.19 | cheers back atcha |
peekatoad
10.29.19 | 9 is fun, what'd you think of their 3rd album? |
Divaman
10.29.19 | Come on Atari, get serious. What does Sputnik have to do with music? |
AsleepInTheBack
10.29.19 | will jam 2, always happy to hear some TFB type jams |
Atari
10.29.19 | @Calc, will do!
@peekatoad, I haven't heard their 3rd album yet. so far I'd rate the first one a 3, the second one a 4 and I'd give R.A.P. music a 4 and Cancer 4 Cure a 3.5. I'm getting slightly burned out on their stuff already but I'm open to other hip-hop recs!
@Ben! hope you've been well. I think you will love 2, let me know what you think! |
Divaman
10.29.19 | Never actually heard any of these, btw. But I see that your tastes run outside of some of the usual boundaries of the site, and that's something I respect. |
Atari
10.29.19 | that's nice of you Diva but this list is pretty sputcore honestly, haha. these were all discovered though this site ;)
that being said, I did try to include a few albums I feel are overlooked gems this year (like that Telethon which should have 100 votes by now, dammit) |
DamnVanne
10.29.19 | Run the Jewels is not for your children |
Divaman
10.29.19 | I saw a reference to country up there, anyway, and I know that's not exactly mainstream here. :) |
tectactoe
10.29.19 | the new Great Grandpa record is incredible. have listened to it four times in the past two days. |
dmathias52
10.29.19 | Loving 1 as well, really came out of nowhere! Good ole Spotify always coming through with the suggestions. Also wanna second the love for 3, the opener is one of my favorites of the year. And 6 of course. Guess I gotta check this whole list lol
Gonna rec the new Courtney Swain from this year, as well as Emily Scott Robinson's debut. Think you'd dig them both, especially Emily Scott Robinson! |
Atari
10.29.19 | ah... feeling like sputnik again |
SlothcoreSam
10.29.19 | Nice list my man, but you forgot to put
Stuck Out Here- Until we're each someone else.
Now that's an album that needs more love! |
MELONADE13
10.29.19 | props for giving 1 shine |
GhandhiLion
10.29.19 | bump for music |
Atari
10.29.19 | Forgot to give u a shout out for 2, sloth
Yeah people should definitely check that album too. This is just some albums I’ve been digging more the past few weeks but I’ll make a more expansive 2019 list eventually. Have received a TON of quality, under-the-radar recs from you so cheers for that |
dmathias52
10.29.19 | Seconding both the Stuck Out Here and Sam love |
Atari
10.29.19 | Hell yeah MELONADE, can’t get enough of that album. I have a feeling it’s going to blow up, and deservedly so |
dmathias52
10.29.19 | Are you (or anyone else) planning on reviewing 1 Atari? If not I might try and give it a go |
MELONADE13
10.29.19 | @atari you checked their first one yet? nearly a damn classic imo |
Atari
10.29.19 | @dmathias, no immediate plans to. feel free to write something up for it!!
I have not @ Melonade, but I plan on listening to it soon. cheers |
tectactoe
10.29.19 | i can't wait until Doof listens to 'Four of Arrows', hits it with a 2.0 and destroys the average in the early goings-on. |
peekatoad
10.29.19 | I think Run the Jewels 3rd album is average. It sounds similar to the first, but more of a mainstream vibe
Starlesscore (i think their name is) recommended FBG Dutchie for some hip hop. But i actually like FBG Young more than him. But he does have great collabs with Dutchie. But there is a whole crew of FBG people that are releasing some killer Hip Hop |
SandwichBubble
10.29.19 | Is Four of Arrows good?
All the actually decent indie on this site has like 10 ratings and a 3.4 average at most so I'm skeptical. |
tectactoe
10.29.19 | yes, it is super legit. imagine Big Thief with a better vocalist (imo) and a slightly more (chamber-y) poppy backbone. |
Atari
10.29.19 | "Gonna rec the new Courtney Swain from this year, as well as Emily Scott Robinson's debut. Think you'd dig them both, especially Emily Scott Robinson!"
yeah I'm listening to Emily Scott Robinson and it's great. cheers! another country pop album on par with Kacey Musgrave's Golden Hour that most the site won't listen to, ha |
WatchItExplode
10.29.19 | Will add 3 to the list and maybe give 2 another shot. Hated the first song on Devon Kay but the rest was pretty good.
Great Grandpa will be my AOTY almost without question. The soaring chorus of English Garden is closer to Jesus than Kanye could ever hope to be. The Big Thief comparison is a good one except they are simultaneously more tender and more rocking...like Big Thief + Hop Along but more realized than either. |
dmathias52
10.29.19 | "another country pop album on par with Kacey Musgrave's Golden Hour that most the site won't listen to, ha"
Ooh way too real. I love Kacey and that she got people to look past the "country" genre, but wish more people would give the rest of genre a shot. |
Atari
10.29.19 | to me Great Grandpa is like a mixture of Eisley, Hop Along and Phoebe Bridgers, but there are so many influences throughout without feeling contrived
@dmathias, yeah I was guilty of not really giving country a chance before honestly and Kacey was one of the artists who got me into the genre. but I just don't see what some people find so special about her in comparison to similar country pop artists |
WatchItExplode
10.29.19 | I hear a lot 90s alt in there too. Every time Bloom starts I swear it a Third Eye Blind song. |
dmathias52
10.29.19 | @Atari I think a lot of Kacey's appeal is she came at the right time. Good, optimistic pop music in a time of turmoil. Just such a good feel good album that nostalgia is already attached too. For that appeal, I'll definitely be grateful for her.
@WatchItExplode The 90s alt is one of my favorite things about it. I think the lyrics really give that vibe a lot, especially Bloom. |
SandwichBubble
10.29.19 | Will give 1 a shot then. I'm trustin' y'all. |
SlothcoreSam
10.29.19 | Will check out Great Grandpa ASAP.
You're welcome on the recs, by the way, it's just great I have a place where i can share my unique taste, get ridiculed and celebrated at the same time by such a diverse community. Prior to this, I'd force my family and friends to hear about all my new discoveries.
And for when you have a spare hour and a half, you need to listen to Telethon's 2017 apocalyptic rock opera, the Grand Spontanean. Laura Stevenson and Chris Farren sing on it as well. It will feature in my top 25 albums of the decade. You really need to pay attention to the story, it's about the end of the Internet, but has some great lyrics throughout, like the track Stillwave.
"that sentiment extinguished quickly
when i caught the sight of a 50 something crewcutted dad-looking guy
throw an empty garbage can through the window of a best buy
and carry out a flat screen
a couple sets of DVDs
of How I Met Your Mother
"Motherfucker! Put 'em down" I heard a disembodied voice call out,
and that guy got tackled to the ground
by a woman with a nametag and a bright blue polo shirt".......

WatchItExplode
10.29.19 | So their songwriting process is one of the most interesting things about the music. |
SlothcoreSam
10.29.19 | Telethon's 2017 album is more of a modern day rock opera, than a traditional album. I'm not good with words, otherwise I'd write a review for it and go more in depth. |
Atari
10.29.19 | I'll check it for sure, Sloth!!
glad people are digging Great Grandpa so much
edit: everyone except for Yotimi apparently, lol |
Slex
10.29.19 | Music sucks
I hate it |
budgie
10.29.19 | hey atari there's this too: https://nightflowers.bandcamp.com/album/eleven-songs
11 track "album" from 2017. opener track is among their very best |
WatchItExplode
10.29.19 | Prince Daddy and the Hyena just tweeted that Great Grandpa is AOTY so that should pretty much decide it, imo. |
Atari
10.29.19 | I love how they follow up "Bloom" with a minimalistic Chopin-esque classical track. sooo good. also the closer is just phenomenal.
cheers budgie, I'll definitely check that out |
Atari
10.29.19 | Now that I think about it I’m getting some Soccer Mommy vibes too with the whole 90s meets dream pop thing they have going on at times |
BlushfulHippocrene
10.30.19 | Really need to check six at some point. Been trying to get into country -- weirdly I like the general sound/aesthetic but often not the songwriting. |
mynameischan
10.30.19 | run the jewels 3 is their best album and one of the best albums of the decade |
ian b
10.30.19 | if no one calls dibs on the new Big Thief, i might give it a shot |
Dewinged
10.30.19 | I am working on a write up for Night Flowers. Big Thief is not as good as the other one but it's still pretty nice. |
sixdegrees
10.30.19 | even people who hate rap music are LOVING this guy |
WatchItExplode
10.30.19 | Blush you need to check out that great grampa it's definitely country leaning in half the tracks and has the kind of vocals are wiping mccafferty from my memory |
Atari
10.30.19 | @Dewi, looking forward to your Night Flowers review! I'm shocked their last album still never received one. definitely check Great Grandpa as I think they're actually pretty similar. "Bloom" in particular has a similar aesthetic as Night Flowers' music
@chan, looking forward to hearing RTJ3! I'm just taking a short break from their music so I don't get burned out on them too quickly
"that description for 7 sums up the entire sputnik hip-hop community"
hey, at least I'm trying! ;) |
Dewinged
10.30.19 | Yeah, man, their debut was so good. When it finally clicked for me I felt it was way too late to review it, but it definitely deserves a write up. "Cruel Wind" is smth else. |
Divaman
10.30.19 | It's never too late to review stuff, Dewi. |
Ecnalzen
10.31.19 | Only familiar with 4 out of this. Thought it was a goodun. |
