| Favorite Albums Of 2012 So Far
admittedly I haven't listened to a ton of stuff coming out this year but I
have heard some stellar stuff so here's my top 10 favorites so far. | 1 | | Old Man Gloom No
Initially at first when I heard this album I really didn't know what to make of it.It
was heavy as hell and mixed all these ambient-ish sounds into it that it really was
hard for me to wrap my head around but I came back to it after a couple of months
and now it's truly become one of my favorite records ever (yeah I went that
far).Just super heavy, intense, face smashing but also airy and spacious sounding.A
must listen for this year. | 2 | | Krallice Years Past Matter
So let the hate begin. If you actually have gotten past the first five words of my
previous sentence because you are open minded then let me explain why I picked
this one.I've never been a huge BM fan honestly because I feel like sooooo many
BM bands these days just stick to the same formula previous BM and influential BM
bands paved a way for and I just find that to be boring but with Krallice I don't get
that. With this album Krallice has progressed more with a lot more dynamics in their
song writing, great memorable riffs and solos, and this album is just easy to get lost
in and never loses my attention. | 3 | | Gaza No Absolutes in Human Suffering
A very intense and in your face listen and shows that Gaza is not an intense band
that just does what their good at every album.A lot of memorable moments on here
especially at the end of the song "In This We Celebrate" and a mix of influences on
here like sludge, grind, metallic hardcore and all that good stuff. | 4 | | Deathspell Omega Drought
Although it's not an album but an EP I thought it was one hell of a listen and one of
the best of this year.Deathspell takes their progression a step farther with alot
clearer sounding production and it feels like the intensity has one upped itself yet
again. Not to mention the drums on here are insane! | 5 | | Meshuggah Koloss
What can I say I'm a Meshuggah fan.Every one of their albums is a progression from
the last and this one is definitely one of their more interesting releases of the last
few years. | 6 | | Swans The Seer
Like pretty much all Swans albums this one was a bitch to get into and took me a
good few weeks to get into.Very dark, intense and mind bending album it's an album
that will take you on a very long and dark journey through the bizarre. | 7 | | Locrian and Mamiffer Bless Them That Curse You
For the most part I always really like Aaron Turner's projects and Mamiffer has
differently been one of his most unique and different sounding projects of late but
when you add Locrian into the mix you get a very spacious, dark and ambient almost
breathy album that is another album that you can get lost in and just let it wash
over you. | 8 | | Baroness Yellow and Green
So yet again let the haters begin ranting.Yes I thought this album was pretty good
sure maybe not their best in my opinion but the way Baroness's sound has been
shifting in the last few years it really does make sense to me that they took this
direction with this album.A lot of great song writing on here and variation and I
know I've said the word Variation and progression a lot in this list but I feel thats
the key to any great record, for me anyway. | 9 | | High on Fire De Vermis Mysteriis
I've always loved High on Fire's music and with their last album I thought it was
good but not that great because it sounded so clean. With this album all that went
went away with super fast and intense guitar, heavy and pounding drums, and very
nice and crunchy addition of bass on here. | 10 | | Pallbearer Sorrow and Extinction
Great band and a great album highly recommended.very heavy doom laden
atmosphere that just sounds so epic. | |

09.25.12 | You should check out the Agonist's newest release. | halloway
09.26.12 | I don't get 10. Thought it was super "meh."
| Betacra
09.26.12 | I've heard 2/3/4/5/9/10, none are in my top 5 of the year but I own a physical copy of 5 and 10, both are brilliant albums and probably make the top 15.
I think my favourite 5 of the year so far is as follows:
Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I
Between the Buried and Me - The Parallax II: Future Sequence
Dephosphorus - Night Sky Transform
Ufomammut - Oro: Opus Alter
Every Time I Die - Ex Lives | Sunn177
09.26.12 | @JokineAugustus haven't heard their stuff might check it out.
@halloway it's all about what appeals man.Admittedly it has fallen down in my rotations of this year.
@MichaelSnoxall I wouldn't consider 7 and 8 metal records especially 7 definitely check that one out for sure.
@Betacra I'm waiting for the new BTBAM reord to come out before I listen to it and I loved The Great Misdirect so I'm sure I'll enjoy this one.I need to check out the new Ufomammut album thought Oro: Opus Primium was pretty good so I gotta make sure I check out Alter. | ManintheBox
09.26.12 | sweet list, props for 1,9, and 10. | PaleCompanion
09.27.12 | "Also, anything that isn't metal?"
3, 6, 7 and 8 | Sunn177
09.27.12 | @PaleCampanion I would consider 3 to have elements of metal in it but i can't believe i forgot to mention 6 as not metal haha.
@mryrtmrnfoxxxy to each his own. | Spag
09.27.12 | Good list mate. Baroness overwhelmed me though. And Meshuggah's album was eh for me. I only ever returned to Demiurge unfortunately.
I do believe the new Cynthesis and Enslaved will destroy all the other albums I've loved this year though. Which means the new Ihsahn, Katatonia, Vintersorg and Anathema altogether.
:P | Evreaia
09.27.12 | Very good list, I see alot of my favs too! 1,3,4,6,9,10 to be precise | Sunn177
09.28.12 | @Spag yeah I for sure love the earlier Meshuggah stuff better but I found this to be a pretty good progression of the sound they've been messing with the last few albums.Enslaved are one of those bands I've been meaning to check out but have never gotten around to.What's a good place to start with them? |
