01.01.22 | WOW topical! here is some fresh pasta
God, this is depressing. I mean, it isn't really depressing, but it certainly isn't much good. When people say "this is depressing", are they ever really depressed by it? Does the continued success of The X-Factor really produce fits of anomie, do the Facebook updates of their friends send them to bed for a week? Even the election result last year didn't really make me depressed. True, on the morning after the count I sat in bed and cried, but that was more disbelieving hysteria than real sorrow, and anyway I had been drinking quite heavily. This isn't depressing because depression doesn't work that way, does it. It isn't an emotion conjured up by circumstance, it's more like a personality trait, or perhaps a physical characteristic, like being good with animals or having large feet. Some even say that depression is not incompatible with happiness. Somebody tells a joke, or pays you a compliment, and you laugh and feel happy but it doesn't make the depression stop any more than it makes your feet shrink. Perhaps they are right, or perhaps they are confusing depression with somthing else, like dissatisfaction or irritability. Anyway, I'm pretty sure it isn't possible to be happy while listening to this record, which is how you know it isn't making you depressed. Something else must be going on. I think it is sadness at the thought that for three months in 1998 everybody you knew listened to this, but listening to it now cannot bring back the feeling of being 19, because it is tired and worn out and so unambitious - a four to the floor beat, an ironic vocal sample, a James Bond hook - and at 19 you were neither tired nor worn out nor unambitious. Listening to it is like walking past your old school - it looks different and the same (have they done building work or are you just taller?) and you expect to feel something but all you really feel is "yeah, I used to come here." I don't miss being 19 - I hadn't any money and I made some bad choices and I spent altogether too much time fostering an image of unattainable mystery and not enough taking drugs and fucking strangers - but I miss having all that energy, and I miss the limitless supply of anger (though I wish it had come with a volume control). What's the opposite of nostalgia? God, this isn't depressing.

3. Devin Townsend - Seventh Wave: was expecting some prog nerdshit here, but it took until about 2 mins to really kick in hmm. Devin Townsend is such a genreblender creativ peacock for albums I know I will never listen to that I sometimes forget he knows how to write songs. this is a good song and agreed on the above, think the nu/alt-metal overtones on that main riff give it a strong centre of gravity 3.5
4. The Rational Academy - End of the Year: lmfao this album's rym page is hilarious, literally just doof and anat upvoting and a handful of e-ghosts tanking that avg.
The song's pretty cool I guess; their tones are the high point, noise is fun but didn't really feel like it was in dialogue with the rest of the song, vocalist hasn't found his place in this mix, chords/melodies feel v derivative of Sonic Nurse-era SY with a noizynoizy washout, but I like that album so I guess it can have a 3.2/5 |

Still confused about this album. It's kinda good, but also not very compelling? This song's a highlight for me. Vocalist's melodies do a great job of outlining the chord progressions while developing/resolving really well. Still missing a touch of undefinable spice for me tho. 3.7 |

01.09.22 | 6. Yves Tumor - Gospel For A New Century: my pretentious wank [of the not cool kind] radar always gave me red flags for this guy and I avoided him. Until now. Hmm, I have no regrets. 8. Knapsack - Katherine The Grateful: knew without looking that this was a Sloth song 3 seconds in lol. Hate to be an Ars, but I feel it lacks character hmm - but not energy! or passion! can you have passion without character. 3.2
9. Spellling - Little Deer: I remember peeping the first three songs of this album and "ummmmm meh nope"ing them at almost exactly the same time this got picked for the list. Enjoying it a little more this time and appreciating how the arrangement is probably very good, but the whole thing still feels soulless and willfully artsy in a glossy, overly pristine way that I majorly do not vibe with when it comes in anything close to baroque packaging; if Weyes Blood, for the most part, couldn't do it for me, Spellling sure as hell ain't gonna. Vocalist still reminds me of early days Allison Goldfrapp (on such songs as the far superior "Deer Stop" hawww) minus all the sexiness plus a circus megaphone that she sometimes forgets she's whispering into. 2.6

01.10.22 | 2. Peter Fox - Alles Neu - Hmm I feel like the outlier on this one. I don't think it is bad by any means but it fails to make an impression on me, it definitely reminds me of a 2000's style of pop rap that I never really took to. 2.6
3. Devin Townsend - Seventh Wave - Okay Devin let's go, this is the song that will make me finally stop resisting your music, let's go. I just don't think I like the way he sings at all, and this song so far has kinda showcased it, it feels like something I'd hear on alt-rock/metal radio stations that still play Theory of a Deadman. Like this is way better than that, but still it doesn't feel special. I actually quite like the chorus and the synths a ton, but this is doing nothing for me. I wish I could dig this so much more. 2.8
4. End of the Year - The Rational Academy - This one is a little more my speed. Fuzzy and sloppy guitar, dreamy vocals, melancholic mood, and a wonderful noisey bridge. I quite enjoy this one, feels like a really good song I'll forget about and then revisit and be equally impressed. 3.6
5. Lightning Bug - The Return - Cute. I should really finish this album at some point. 3.4 |
Minushuman24
01.10.22 | 6. Yves Tumor - Gospel for a New Century - pretty fun actually 3.3
7. Acoustic Ladyland - Sport Mode - Oh I didn't expect this, this is fun as hell. There's not too much to it, but the energy is high and it makes me feel happy. 3.5
8. Knapsack - Katherine the Grateful - ayyyye yea some emo punk let's gooo. Sloth knows the way to my heart, this is the best kinda 90's feel. Nostalgic while not being familiar to me at all. 3.6
9. Spellling - Little Deer - lmao I thought this was black metal for some reason. Not my favorite vocal inflections, but I quite enjoy this instrumentally. Why does this sound like a christmas song to me. Kinda silly, kinda cute. 3.3
10. Eartheater - Faith Consuming Hope - lol butt fart rocket sparklers 3.6 |

01.11.22 | 9. Little Deer: A bit too boring for my taste. 2.5
10. Faith Consuming Hope: Sounds strange. I feel like there was a long build up that didn't really lead anywhere but I kinda see how this fits on an album as a closer. I like the album cover. 3.0
11. Cascading Celestial Giants: Interesting. Atmospheric. 3.5 |
fogza
01.12.22 | 12. Gal Costa: Não Identificado - Impressive central melody and some good off kilter flourishes, but an unpleasant organ intro and maybe a little too loungey at times. 3.6 |

01.13.22 | 11. Drexciya - Cascading Celestial Giants: Is this 3033 or is it prehistoric secrethistory music from before there were humans HUH. Stegosaurus twerk 3.2
12. Gal Costa - Não identificado: This is nice. I [don't really] remember hearing this about three years ago and thinking it was boring. It's not boring! That makes it the Most Improved Song of the Month. 3.5
13. Null - The Clearing: oh garas you make me chuckle this is so silly. Americans playing black and/or folk metal will never not be funny 2.3 |
Demon of the Fall
01.13.22 | 'Never felt the need to listen to the rest of the album after this opener. Song is only 2:30 but it pretty much feels like an eternity' - whaaaaa?
Seriously stoked it was picked here though and maybe people actually checked it? Hoping for some additional Living With A Tiger ratings in the near future!
I'll think of something. |
garas
01.13.22 | Interesting reactions for my song, but I accept your opinions.
However, Johnny got the essence of it: "oh garas you make me chuckle this is so silly" - that's it! Lovely! |
Demon of the Fall
01.13.22 | Esthero - Breath From Another
idk it's warm and fuzzy but cool and nice, plus it seems suitable for this because a) low no. of ratings and b) it is not just an opener but the t/t too and c) it should appeal to like more than one user, maybe. So yeah please enjoy (or not).
Probably doing it wrong. |

It's riffy metal, not my thing. End soon please, thanks.
2/5
“End of the Year”
Buried in the background vocals, must be shoegaze. Not bad, but also whatever.
3/5
"The Return"
Chill guitar. This is nice. Kinda country, kinda dreamy. I guess country dream pop is a trend now. Children of Mazzy Star.
3.7/5
"Gospel for a New Century"
Exciting brass so far. Not too into these vocals though. I've heard Safe in the Hands of Love and found it boring, so this is definitely a step in the right direction. The briefness works in its favor as well.
3.4/5
"Sport Mode"
Good guitar groove and good saxophone. Short, sweet, and fun.
3.9/5
"Katherine the Grateful"
Awful pop-punk vocals and decent bass, weird combo. Now the vocals are even worse. I hate this It's so melodrama and whiny.
1.8/5
"Little Deer"
I've checked this song before, but I don't remember it. I love the strings and ethereal vocals. Wow her voice is weird as fuck, but I like it? I'm not sure. I'm mixed on this, but maybe I'd feel differently if I checked the album.
3.5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
01.14.22 | "Faith Consuming Hope"
Trippy vocals and string, hmmm. A bit minimalist, but it's pleasant and weird so I don't know how to feel. Good enough song.
3.8/5
"Cascading Celestial Giants"
Repetitive and almost 9 minutes...2 and a half minutes in and I'm not feeling it, but let's see. Fucking hell 7 minutes in and it's hardly changed beyond adding a small element here and there.
2/5
"The Clearing"
Fancy piano, fancy folk guitar, and RAAAAAAWR. Extreme folk metal never ceases to be lame. Now there's a flute that sounds like it's being played by a faun. Eh, I guess it's not the worst?
2.2/5 |
MiloRuggles
01.14.22 | Frank Turner - I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous
Song could've been close to bad if the vocalist didn't put in such a solid innings to sell it! Good progression, solid opener 3.2 |
fogza
01.14.22 | 14. Frank Turner: I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous - It actually reminds me of a C-list (to borrow from the song) Piano Man. I dunno, not enough going for it in the melody and finale stakes. Strings are a bit cornballs at the end. 2.5 |

01.16.22 | 16. Starflyer 59: Blue Collar Love - Feels like your go to meal at a franchise restaurant that you don't love or hate, but are frequently invited to. Serviceable, just wish it had more moments like the short sleazy guitar line at the end. 3.4 |

16. Starflyer 59 - Blue Collar Love
Yo, this cool! Nothin too special. I used to abuse the shit out of these very same chords, but I sounded far far worse. 3.5
17. The Hotelier - An Introduction To The Album + Lyrics
I-is that the track name? I don't mind this album, even though it's a cursed genre for me. Song is very well-paced with good payoff, pulls you right in and leaves you wanting more. 4 |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.17.22 | 14. Frank Turner - I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous: idk why I never had a Frank Turner phase he has probably the only good accent in the greater Anglosphere. his song is also good 3.7
15. The Dear Hunter - Ouroboros: So um I like the Dear Hunter and I used to adore them and this is probably their best album and the song is one of the best story moments, but I always thought it was by far their most underwhelming Act closer muzically so it fails this theme v miserably and imma subtract an entire 1pt. I do like the second half though :[ 2.2
16. Starflyer 59 - Blue Collar Love: protodeftones [123] but it doesn't sound like popping a zit so an instant improvement. felt like a tease tbh, I want more. gonna dl this album now, meant to do it last year and forgot oops. hope the rest is gazier 3.5
17. The Hotelier - An Introduction To The Album: iconic track, haven't jammed this in a while. i feel that listening this in isolation is Not Okay bc it's probably more of an opener than a standalone song, but whatever, still got that magic 4.1
18. The Drones - The Cockeyed Lowlife Of The Highlands: who rec'd this oh lol porc hi porc this is porccore. evil noise shitblues uh yes this goes 4.0 |

01.19.22 | 19. Melt Yourself Down: Fix My Life - This sounds like everyone spontaneously starting making music in the kitchen with pots and blenders and stuff, but it also doesn't because it doesn't sound like anyone is playing the blender. It's fun though. 3.6 |

01.20.22 | 20. Women: Eyesore - Great closer, there's a part of this record that loses me a bit, but this is a strong return to form. Always thought this song had a slightly different vibe to the rest of the album, like a slight romantic edge. 4.5 |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.20.22 | hot take China Steps thru Venice Lockjaw is ez the strongest part of Pubic Strain and Eyesore, while good, is the most overrated track by a decent margin maybe

But then there moments like the vocals at 1:48, and the crazy pomp and circumstance at very regular intervals. I cannot escape the Will Ferrell factor, like if Eurovision (which is a terrible movie that I could not finish btw) had been about some epic metal competition the movie song might sound like this. As always, disclaimer, this is just not my thing. 2.4 |

01.22.22 | i just wanna say that i'm not here bailing on this thing, just because i don't post ratings.
i usually listen to the full albums and then give soundoffs, but i don't want to post a quickie opinion on a song before i have a full soundoff for the album, which can take some time, so i'm then late on everything |

01.22.22 | Well it would be nice if you rated... But in practice only a third of the reccers ever rate anyway |
Minushuman24
01.22.22 | 11. Drexicya - Cascading Celestial Giants - Was not expecting much going into this one. I actually groaned when I saw how long it was, but god damn. This is some electronic music I can really vibe with. Repetitive in the right ways, immersive, cold, but catchy. Excellent stuff 4.0
12. Gal Costa - Nao Identificado - Validation time for Ars. This rules, of course it rules, nothing I can really say about it that we don't already know. 4.2
13. Null - The Clearing - There is a place..... deep in the forest" pan flute solo ends midtempo guitar time screaming* THERE IS A PLACE IN THE FOREST WHERE TIME STANDS STILL HERE IN THE CLEARING pan flute solo 2.7 |

01.23.22 | 23. Kenji Kawai: Making of Cyborg - It's a great movie and this works well with the visuals. On its own it's good but probably not something I would listen to as a standalone piece. 3.4 |

01.25.22 | Ok, I'm assuming there is no challenge to Johnny's request for Feb SOTD. I'm also assuming that Johnny did in fact request Feb as his response was typically cryptic and I don't necessarily speak ofthewell language. So JOTW is "tag, you're it" as of now! Love all the wailing and build-up. Good as opener, kinda incomplete as track. 3.5
21.Borknagar - Thunderous
Ticks a lot of boxes in my personal game of hokey metal bingo, plus kinda unfluid in its composition to boot. 2
22. I Feel Fine - Something New To Worry About
Instrumentally sound, tonally tasty, dynamically dynamic. Vocals a bit overcooked. Cool! 3.8

24. Thee Silvetc - opener
Intro is pure hearts. Bass got beef. As well structured/developed as the best of Efrim's works, and pretty great vocals to boot. 5555555555555555555555

20. Women - Eyesore: still not my Public Strain favourite but good. this band sounds like how your feet feel when they get cold and clammy and won't warm up no matter how many socks you put on 3.5
21. Borknagar - Thunderous: happy birthday this is a long song 2.4
22. I Feel Fine - Something New To Worry About: i worry about yolo and his achey break heart music, of which ig this is a decent example 3.4
23. Kenji Kawai - Making of Cyborg: yes excellent excellent mmmyes 3.9
24. Thee blahblah - Fuck Off blahblah: this is drunk tosser music i hate you phero. should have gone for closers and done BlindBlindBlind instead. Efrim Menuck's operatic punk bollocks have aged not very well at all but this is still a decent song and the last 2 mins are very good i guess 3.4
25. Lone - Coreshine Voodoo: this is more like it """""video game menu music vibes""""" bruh 3.8
26. Esthero - Breath From Another: yes yes yes lovely, really lovely, beautiful breaks good downtempo i want this album good month tbh 4.1
27. Zhrine - Utopian Warfare: predictable but satisfying, neat shit 3.6
28. Tom Waits - Ol' 55: much as it's easy to take the piss out of fogza for being v silly on tom waits, i've never spent much time with his early stuff (and not at all with this album). this song is fab! silly fogza. 3.7
29. Anberlin - Fin: this song was legendary when I first joined sput, but I did not hear it. i do not know what to expect. maybe it will be like Pavement's Fin (now there's a great closer!)? This guy reminds a bit of the guy from Dredg. They were a good band. awwwww yeah that choir part has aged so badly it hurts my soul. RIP alt rock i am so sorry. 2.8
30. Janelle Monae - BaBopByeYa: Janelle Monae has never grabbed me will this song change things it is 9 minutes long it had better. her voice suits this style well, nice arrangement nice noir mmmokay promising. is that a midway twist or a midway meander. agreed with fogza that it's engaging moment to moment but doesn't really rise above the sum of decent parts, or whatever. good 3.4
31. mewithoutYou - Rainbow Signs: I don't love listening to this song in isolation bc Pale Horses is the greatest album ever but it is not the greatest song ever. Or is it? No, it's not, it needs that album and its cryptic headache and longform greyscale haze behind it along with all the weight of that apocalyptic metaphor (now no longer just metaphor!) and parental baggage as developed so messily and wonderfully elsewhere, but on its own it's still pretty good fire n brimstone i guess. 5 obviously. |

"Ouroboros"
Not into these vocals. Reminds me oddly of Muse, but I can't place why. This percussion section towards the end is kinda intriguing though. Passible I guess.
3/5
"Blue Collar Love"
Why does this sound like a weird midpoint between MBV and Deftones? I don't like this at all. It's murky, it's insipid, it's background noise.
2.5/5
"An Introduction to the Album"
Oh wow, it's the worst vocals of all time, cool. Okay, I'm being dramatic, but I hate this style so much. Dude's gonna hurt his throat with all that ugly singing. Guitar part's catchy?
1.7/5
"Cockeyed Lowlife of the Highlands"
Cool riff. Not feeling the vocals, but they might as well be amazing compared to the last song. The music rules, but dammit those vocals. It's a no from m... a good fake-out ending? Wow okay, +.1 for that.
2.9/5
"Fix My Life"
Glitchy, and fun. I like the saxophone. The vocalizations are cool too and the drums. Very likable song and I would probably love the party this song would belong at.
3.8/5
"Eyesore"
Damn this is indie as FUCK. This is like the kind of indie that was made by people who love Lou Reed, but also don't wanna sound TOO much like him. I respect that and this is good for sure. Don't kill me, but this is also kinda like messier Foxygen.

bm I can dig. Nothing mental, but will probably check the album 3.5
28. Tom Waits - Ol' 55
One of those awkward songs that has a narrative, but only offers a lil set dressing. That or the subtle nuance of the lyrics is lost on me (he spent a night with someone special and feels good, which is cool, but maybe warrants a couple more stanzas?). Anyway, the chorus fucks and those vocal harmonies tickle me 3.5
29. Anberlin - [*Fin]
Expecting to hate this only knowing the band by rep. Hmmmm strong on closer vibes, which is cool, but weird out of context. Production falling flat for what they're shootin for here (particularly once the questionably necessary choir come and stand right in front of the band). Pretty great songwriting through and through though. 3.3
30. Janelle Monae - BaBopByeYa
Um yeah I'm not gonna unpack this at all but yesyesyes 4.2

Aw he sounds so young here. It's cute, but I don't like it as much as his grittier smoker voice stuff oddly enough.
3.6/5
"Fin"
Almost 9 minutes of whiny alt? Ugh. This is so boring that I can't even find it annoying.
2/5
"BaBopByeYa"
Finally, a song that actually deserves to be almost 9 minutes. Great horns nad strings with an underbelly of arty jazz lingering. Monae's voice is comforting, but the instrumentation is exciting. What a great closer to such an epic album.
4.8/5
"Rainbow Signs"
WHAT ARE THOSE VOCALS? He sounds like he's mumbling into a ceramic teacup: one filled with tea. The floaty guitar is fine though. Now that there are some non-silly vocals he's just post-hardcore crying. Bad bad bad song. It's a shame because it's musically engaging. And the mumbling is back. I hate this.
