Maybe one on what determines our BNM or one on what determines the order of the album charts? |
macman76
02.28.18 | BNM?
The charts are easy, average of the album ratings, albums have to have 20 or more ratings. |

02.28.18 | @relinquished what did I say about using these pitches for comedic purposes? |
Frippertronics
02.28.18 | @macdaddy
Best new music. I know i've heard the explanation of how it has to have a 3.5+ mean from contribs/staff but i wanna know the nitty gritty of it (like how many of us need to rate it higher than 3.5 to get it made BNM) |
macman76
02.28.18 | Ahhh, I’m gonna have to interview myself, cuz I have a better tangent idea: what leads to the trending albums ordering? |

03.01.18 | wouldn't mind seeing the top 250 users app make a comeback tbh |

03.01.18 | Yeah I’d also love to see the top 250 users app return |

03.01.18 | The folk asked me to find the average age for Sput from the Sputnik birthday lists I made, and I said that's a job for MACMAN! u think you can work with it? |
macman76
03.01.18 | @dewinged I could do a mini post on it maybe, link me |
bgillesp
03.01.18 | So you know how objectivity is based on have a 3.0 rating average. Well what is the average rating for all albums on the site? Probably too much data to pull but I've always wondered |

macman76
03.01.18 | @bgil
I've answered this at some point, from the top 250 users data..
the average album rating (what you see as the sputnik score) among 35000+ albums with more than 15 ratings is ~3.6, and the distribution looks like this https://imgur.com/a/TwvbN
the average rating of all the ratings albums i scraped, which was 119000+ albums and 5,657,000 ratings, is ~ 3.7 |
bgillesp
03.01.18 | Oh neat. Then my suggestion is an app that scrapes the data of all the albums a specific user has rated (so like if i wanted to use it it would take my ratings) and find the average sput rating for those only, then compare the user's personal average rating to see if they underrate, overrate, or match the sput average |
neekafat
03.01.18 | Still think you should do the swearing per genre thing (; |
macman76
03.01.18 | @bgill i'll take it under consideration |
Aberf
03.01.18 | stats for users affinity. Like comparing 2 users rated albums and show the similarities and differences. |
macman76
03.01.18 | @aberf not a bad suggestion but... https://www.sputnikmusic.com/blog/2017/07/25/statnik-2-musical-neighbor-boogaloo/
theres a lot "simpsons did it" to this thread, lol |

03.01.18 | average proportionality coef between user comments and ratings? |
Frippertronics
03.01.18 | @bgill
ye |

03.01.18 | @SpaceMan, that sounds cool, you could throw in lists and reviews too unless that creates some divide by 0 error |
DarkTyler
03.01.18 | delete your blog |
macman76
03.01.18 | what would GoodTyler say? |
macman76
03.01.18 | @fripp sold, I have a plan to do something with review comments, when i get around to it i'll set up a quick interview between us
@space, you mean the correlation... and here they are, dont know how this will look, this is for the 2017 chart data but probably matches general ratings
Rating ratings reviews lists comments
Rating 1.00 -0.16 -0.07 -0.05 -0.08
specific to your question, the more you rate the lower Ratings you give (-.16 correlation) and same with the more lists, reveiews, and comments you do. |
DarkTyler
03.01.18 | he would ask for an interview |
macman76
03.01.18 | does either tyler have a good idea? |
TheSpaceMan
03.01.18 | yeah i guess i did, i aint no statistician. but interesting data |
macman76
03.01.18 | if you do it via rank order correlation, which is probably more appropriate since the count data is really skewed, its:
Rating ratings reviews lists comments
Rating 1.00 -0.29 -0.12 -0.16 -0.20
|
Demon of the Fall
03.01.18 | @bgillesp: that would be super-interesting (to me at least), I'd like to '2nd' that idea macman.
The issue with using 3.00 as the 'optimal' average for objectivity (apart from the fact 3 doesn't seem to be the universal average between users) is that if you mainly listen to highly rated albums then your average score is likely to be much higher (almost) by default.
And who in their right mind purposefully listen to rubbish to 'fix' their objectivity?... ok maybe Doof does. |

What about user activity averages? How long does the average user stay active (ratings and/or comments)? Has the average changed over the years? . . . Or something like that. |
