The Ninth Hundred Shows

I've done monkey's paw'd myself. Too many shows. Too many. Here's the next hundred that covers 3 months of summer '22
1Corrosion of Conformity
Deliverance

Industrial Strength Tour
Palace Theatre, St. Paul, 04/05/2022

I legit accidentally told Pepper he couldn’t shit in the employee bathroom, didn’t realize it was him,, he was a champ about it.
2Melvins
Bad Mood Rising

Industrial Strength Tour
Palace Theatre, St. Paul, 04/05/2022
3Ministry
Moral Hygiene

Industrial Strength Tour
Palace Theatre, St. Paul, 04/05/2022

It never ceases to amaze me that racist rednecks find themselves at Ministry shows. Very strange stuff. Still by far the coolest ministry show I have seen.
4Eyehategod
Take as Needed for Pain

First Avenue, Minneapolis, 04/07/2022
5Clutch
Earth Rocker

First Avenue, Minneapolis, 04/07/2022

Neil Fallon is one of the most captivating frontmen in the scene
6Viagra Boys
Welfare Jazz

Amsterdam Bar & Hall, St. Paul, 04/09/2022

Truly unhinged.
7The Smoking Popes
Born to quit

The Fillmore, Minneapolis, 04/10/2022

So, the Fillmore has a problem. I don’t know if it is the acoustics which are naturally shit because the venue is built to look instagram pretty, or if the sound techs genuinely try to make the openers sound bad, so the main act would seem even better, but holy shit guys what happened here. I’ve seen Smoking Popes before, it is not their problem, but in the center of the crowd you could not hear the vocals whatsoever. It took me a minute to realize they were playing the Willy Wonka song. It was so terrible. Felt really bad.
8Dillinger Four
Situationist Comedy

The Fillmore, Minneapolis, 04/10/2022

Luckily D4 sounds like shit in the best possible way, so this set absolutely ripped
9Jawbreaker
Dear You

The Fillmore, Minneapolis, 04/10/2022

Again, I’m not sure, but this felt very flat. Like the mixing was going for a studio mix. It took the energy out of the songs. It was still pretty good, but a far cry from the first two times seeing Jawbreaker. It was still absolutely lovely to hear all of Dear You in its entirety (almost, why no Lurker????).
10Lizzie No
Vanity

Turf Club, St. Paul, 04/22/2022
11Adia Victoria
A Southern Gothic

Turf Club, St. Paul, 04/22/2022

Absolutely no knowledge of this artist prior to this set. I went into it expecting “current-core” or music that is heavily played on our popular local radio station “The Current” which plays a lot of standard blues rock, local bands, indie pop, etc. Think Alabama Shakes or Nathaniel Rateliff. Anyway, this is played on that station, however she actually blew my mind with how incredible this set was. Songs about murder, noise rock/shoegaze breakdowns, a powerful voice. Fantastic stuff right here, and truly helped with the burnout I was experiencing during this time.
12Robyn Hitchcock
The Man Upstairs

Turf Club, St. Paul, 04/16/2022

An entirely acoustic evening with Robyn. Pretty solid stuff, very kind bloke.
13Soft Kill
Dead Kids R.I.P. City

Turf Club, St. Paul, 04/17/2022

I really did not expect this to be such an emotionally moving show. It felt heavy, poignant, and from a place of passion. It kinda fucked me up. I was able to talk to Tobias for quite a while and it was pretty heavy. Straight up heart on the sleeve shit.

Always a treat to see LJG. Always a treat to be able to see some old school Against Me! tracks on an acoustic guitar as well.

Fine Line, Minneapolis, 05/01/2022
24Pig Destroyer

3 Floyds Brewing and Warpigs Present…
Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/03/2022

AH FUCK YEAH. Napalm Death fuckin’ wails.
26Fontaines D.C.
Skinty Fia

First Avenue, Minneapolis, 05/07/2022

Due to my position and my job security I will abstain from discussing much of my feelings on this show, but I will say that I am indeed a big fan of this band. Sidenote: I skipped Just Mustard opening because I committed to the bit that I hated mustard too much and realized while standing outside they are very very good.
27Destruction
Diabolical

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/07/2022

Anyway, halfway through Fontaines I left and I went down to see some dumb, kick ass thrash metal to feel like a teenager again.
28C.O.F.F.I.N
Children Of Finland Fighting In Norway

FIne Line, Minneapolis, 05/13/2022
29Upchuck
Sense Yourself

FIne Line, Minneapolis, 05/13/2022

Honestly maybe the highlight of this night
30Amyl and the Sniffers
Comfort To Me

FIne Line, Minneapolis, 05/13/2022

Chaotic blast of punk ‘n’ roll
31Moon Kissed
I’d Like to Tell You Something Important

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/14/2022
32Sir Chloe
Party Favors

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/14/2022

Putting my booking cap on, I found it extremely strange that not only was this show not booked all ages, which I suppose it didn’t need to go that far, but it was booked at a strictly 21+ venue. There’s plenty of fans that are old enough to go, myself included, but they also have a very strong base in the under 21 crowd. It was always strange to me. Great set tho
33Caroline Loveglow
Strawberry

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/15/2022
34Hatchie
Giving the World Away

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/15/2022
35Slayyyter
Troubled Paradise

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/16/2022

I would like to bring to your attention that the Turf Club is a 21+ Dive Bar in a dodgy part of town, I don’t know why these three shows were all here.

Anyway, I escorted her around the venue and bus, and actually got to chat with her for a good while. She was genuinely excited to play the Turf cause she’s used to erm, not wood panel dive bars from the 1940’s. She’s a really sweet and humble person, killer performer too.
36Infected Rain

44Metalachi

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/26/2022

This is a mariachi metal cover band. It certainly was… interesting. Not for the sober.
45Girl Talk

First Avenue, Minneapolis, 05/27/2022

Yo this was wild, this rules, go see Girl Talk. Maybe don’t go if you’re not a millennial actually.

48Midwife (USA)
Luminol

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/29/2022

Beautiful, solemn, kinda like Silent Hill vibes.
49The Body
I’ve Seen All I Need To See

Turf Club, St. Paul, 05/29/2022

Ugly, Noisey, kinda like the fucked up version of Silent Hill vibes.
Truthfully I was way too high for this, I remember staring at Chip King, bathed in a static red light, he’s wearing sweatpants and new sketchers, like a grandpa going to the gas station for a pack of parliaments, just wailing like a banshee into the microphone. I turn to my coworker and whisper to him “I feel like I’m being dragged through hell”. He responded, not knowing my distraught, with empty eyes, a smile, and a nod of acknowledgement and maybe something along the lines of “Hell yeah brother”.

I got my favorite hat at this show.

70Integrity

Fine Line, Minneapolis, 06/22/2022

Never thought I would get to see this band, it was brutal. Due to the headliner being a party-thrash band and due to me working the mosh pit this night, I had plenty of people complain to me about crowd killing, which sucks yes, but it’s an OG metalcore band and had to tell people that is just how these shows go. It was an interesting mix of crowds, probably a bad idea

Palace Theatre, St. Paul, 07/03/2022

Despite Puscifer being absolute dogshit, and despite the fact that I found out that maybe I say their name wrong, but I still can’t tell, because everyone seemed to be confused saying their name out loud for the first time because who the fuck talks about Puscifer, I gotta say… Super fun live.
