| DungeonBoy's top 10 of 2018
I probably don't dig as deep as half of you, but what can I say, I like what I like. Enjoy my unnecessary list of the top 10 of 2018 from A to the Z. | 1 | | Alkaline Trio Is This Thing Cursed?
Never thought I would dig a new Alkaline Trio album so much in 2018, but this album is just chock full of hits. It’s got that dark pop punk sound they’re known for but if anything they’ve only gotten better over the years. Great lyrics, great vocals, great album. | 2 | | Allelic The Smoke of Atavistic Fires
Very happy to see this project come to fruition and the fusion of folk and black metal ideas on this is really something remarkable. I’m 99% sure I’ve never heard someone play the spoons on an atmospheric black metal album.

Kauan front man/visionary's first solo album. Half of it was released as singles throughout the year, so I pretty much knew what to expect quality wise, and it certainly does not disappoint. Fans of Kauan should check as it has a similar atmosphere/style, but with a tad more intimate and subdued.
https://antonbelov.bandcamp.com/ | 4 | | Aorlhac L'esprit des vents
Near flawlessly executed French Melodic Black Metal.
https://ladlo.bandcamp.com/album/lesprit-des-vents | 5 | | Hit the Switch Entropic
Southern California melodic skate punk. You’ll either love or hate the high pitched layered vocals but dude’s got some great pipes. They call themselves melodic thrash punk… okie… they’re just very modern sounding old school skate punk, so if you like stuff like NUFAN, the Swellers, those kinda jams that makes you wanna bust out your old Nash board from your parent’s basement and rip a sick ollie over that curb, check it.

No introduction needed, As much as I loved Anareta I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say this is their best yet. melodic progressive OSDM fans rejoice.

best dark folk album of 2018. An excellent follow up to “O Camino..” intimate vocals, classical guitars, harps, and everyone’s favorite instrument, the hurdy gurdy. Great stuff!

So yeah it’s two songs, but this is the most beautiful 10 minutes of piano/keys/strings music recorded in 2018. If you dig bands like Hammock, Mono, Explosions in the Sky, you should check out Slow Meadow and in particular this EP.

Azathoth’s 2018 AOTY
https://sulphuraeon-vanrecords.bandcamp.com/ | 10 | | Vouna Vouna
Female fronted cascadian Black/Doom metal on the new Artemisia Records run by members of WITTR. Very natural sounding instruments with heavy keys that envelop the album. Nothing groundbreaking, but I really connected with the atmosphere, production, and flow of this. It’s also a short listen around 30 minutes, which helps with my oftentimes short attention span.

12.31.18 | @Archelirion yeah man, love those melodic trems and the vocals. Great album while pretty much doing nothing new m/ | lalchimiste
01.07.19 | oh man, can't wait to hear 3 (even though I still haven't jammed Kaiho thoroughly, what a shame..!) and 9. How does it compare to gateways?
Agree about 7, such a magical band. In the same vein, my EP of the year is Solstice by far. Easily the most captivating and well crafted | DungeonBoy
01.07.19 | Cheers dude! 3 is great in a very subtle and intricate way. Not as immediately moving as most of the greatest moments Kauan have done, but Anton Belov is such an excellent composer, and everything he does is gold.
9 has the typical dense lovecraftian vibe of the two previous releases, but IMO it's the best thing they've done so far which is saying a lot! Definitely worth checking it out.
Sangre de Muerdago are on a whole different level, such a unique atmosphere for dark folk.
I've been writing a ton lately for the new LP. I am very excited about how it's all coming along but I am still quite proud of how Solstice turned out and the enjoyment people have gotten out of it. Thanks for the kind words, gives me a little inspirado to keep plugging away (: | lalchimiste
01.07.19 | Damn will check both obviously.
Niiice, really intrigued to hear it!
As far as metal goes I think Vallendusk's latest was my AOTY. It just ticked all the right boxes for me, their compositions are really adventurous yet so memorable. | DungeonBoy
01.07.19 | Oh nice, yeah thanks for reminding me about that, still need to give that a proper listen. Also, need to respin that new Omnium Gatherum album from 2018. Probably a lot of good stuff that I missed. | lalchimiste
01.07.19 | Yeah I feel you, as I said I'm still catching up on stuff from 2017 | Elynna
01.07.19 | Nice list, I definitely need to revisit Aorlhac | lalchimiste
01.07.19 | Since Elynna dropped by, he made me a rec I think you could dig, Eneferens. I only jammed it like 3-4 times but it was really solid. | lalchimiste
01.07.19 | Also, 5's description makes me nostalgic. I feel it was long ago I was jamming some Millencolin/Bad Religion and shredding it in the streets. Started again last summer with a nice hybrid longboard/street deck, so much fun |
