2013 Disappointments

This year has so many good releases, but there's always the ones that have so much hype and promise.. but end up failing miserably. There are more than 5 I could list, but these were some of the bigger ones for me.
1A Lot Like Birds
No Place

I heard a lot of hype for this and read so many good reviews on here once it came
out... but the spoken word and screaming just absolutely ruined what otherwise
could have been a 4.5 rated album for me. I'd love to hear an instrumental version
of this... or at least one with better harsh vox and no shitty spoken word. The
clean vox are good though, don't get me wrong.
2Eye Empire
Evolve

I've loved Donald Carpenter since his days in Submersed. When Eye Empire formed,
I was excited to hear him in the context of a harder rocking band. Impact is beyond
amazing and a hard rock album that could rival Alter Bridge. This though? Cliched
riffs and uninspired vocals. Seriously, Donald's vox just don't seem to settle into
any of the songs and there's no atmosphere like there was on the previous album.
I'll chalk this up to sophomore slump and give them a pass.
3Karnivool
Asymmetry

Holy shit where to begin with this album. I get that they didn't want to make Sound
Awake v. 2... but this is just a mess of an album. The mixing is terrible, most of the
songs seem like they were made around 'cool' drum beats, everything just sounds
bad. I think the only two tracks I can listen to without hitting skip are 'We Are' and
'Nachash'. This was my most anticipated album of the year and it let me down so
hard. Not cool Ian. Plus Birds of Tokyo's latest sucked too.. so two bad Kenny
albums this year. Ugh.
4John Mayer
Paradise Valley

I love John Mayer and don't care who knows it. Continuum is a masterpiece and I
greatly enjoyed Battle Studies and Born and Raised, but this just sounds like Bsides
from B&R. Just mediocre faux-country pop. You can do better than this John, come
on.
5The Safety Fire
Mouth of Swords

Crazy right? A djent band letting someone down. I'd heard a lot of good things
about this band (and somewhat enjoyed their first album last year), but this just
didn't click for me and I so want it to. The instruments are awesome, but the
vocals just don't seem to fit to me. Too many songs feel like you could switch the
vocal tracks and get the same effect. I'll just stick with Periphery (insert hate
responses)
