05.03.12 | AS much as I hate to admit it, 4,5 and 7 were some of the first heavy bands i listened too lol.. At least it was a start.. Alexisonfire-Watch out! was the first album to get me into heavier and non mainstream music and it's still an amazing album. |
CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | For reason reason the summary keeps adding typos when I swear I'm not doing it.
Ohhhh fuuu- I forgot Alexisonfire, that was a big thing for me as well. The girl possessed!!!! |
Deviant.

CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | 15 is still a solid 3
Yeah I still like them |
YankeeDudel
05.03.12 | 15 still slays and 1 is way too drenched in nostalgia for me.
My metal adventure from when I was a kid went like this:
1) Typical Classic Rock/Metal: Led Zep, Van Halen, Nirvana, Maiden, Sabbath, etc.
2) Nu Metal: Korn, Linkin Park, SOAD, Papa Roach, POD, Limp Bizkit, et.c
3) Thrash: Big 4, Pantera, etc.
4) Metalcore: Killswitch, LOG, AILD, Shadows Fall, Unearth, ATR, etc.
5) Melodeath: In Flames, Opeth, Soilwork, Children Of Bodom, Amon Amarth, etc.
I pretty much stayed with that kind of stuff for a little while but then bands like Emperor, Neurosis, and Death opened
me more up to Black, Post, and Death metal. Now I can enjoy all kinds of it, although I still prefer a little melody and/or
atmosphere. |

05.03.12 | this is one of the most horrific lists ive ever seen. |
CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | @YankeeDudel Nice list man, it's sad that I never really grew up with most of those bands (class metal) but I have the rest of my life to listen to them. :p |

I know *hangs head in shame* |
YankeeDudel
05.03.12 | Well if you were a kid in the late 90s it was impossible to avoid Nu Metal. Much like it is for kids now to avoid metalcore.
Cept Nu Metal was 10x more mainstream. Obviously alot of it sucked ass looking back now, but its crazy nostalgic and Im
loyal to my past musical companions. Some of it still gets a spin once in a while for the mems.

JohnnyoftheWell
05.03.12 | I remember when I thought that Her Voice Resides from 22 was the heaviest song I'd ever heard. Lol |
CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | I couldn't escape nu metal nor metalcore, haha.
I didn't even know how to find bands except for "heaviest breakdowns" on youtube etc
At least I didn't listen to 'crunkcore' |
YankeeDudel
05.03.12 | System Im with you on that. Like I said Nu Metal was much more mainstream in the late 90s than metalcore is now. Any form of metal is always going to pale in comparison to pop though. Im just saying for kids into metal these days its pretty hard to avoid metalcore since its the dominant metal subgenre. |
YankeeDudel
05.03.12 | Not really. Like System said the vast majority of people we know only listen to pop, bad hip hop, dubstep/dance music, or mainstream rock. Id be stoked if I ran into somebody who liked Killswitch Engage. You cant ever expect death or black metal to all of the sudden become mainstream. They will always be underground and there will always be slightly more commercial heavy music whether it be glam, grunge, nu, or core. |
YankeeDudel
05.03.12 | Well without that sad stuff alot of us wouldnt have gotten into "better" stuff. I owe alot to some of those bands. We just has to be smart enough to dig a little deeper and not stay listening only listening to Breaking Benjamin. Alot of people dont get past the mainstream rock stage at all.
Its like your love for that ginger in Eve 6. The biggest reason you like them is because of the nostalgia. I used to jam to "Anytime" and "Open Road" in middle school too baby. |
CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | Agree with Yankee, if it wasn't for being exposed to terrible music, I wouldn't have gotten into the better stuff. |
dixoncocks
05.03.12 | "I found these guys on Sumerian Records. I thought The Faceless was bad but this was true metal. The first two songs are still decent."
|
CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | Yep I can't believe I thought that, lol. |
Dimor
05.03.12 | From what i remember it was probably Metallica and Trivium. Im sure there were other bands aswell, just can't remember atm. |
CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | I used to think of it as experimental metal but I can't stand them anymore. |
YankeeDudel
05.03.12 | Im pretty sure most started with Metallica Dimor.
Thats why I cant hate on the Black Album, or even Load/ReLoad. Because Metallica going mainstream brought them millions of fans. Then those fans would go into their 80s shit and love it. Then they would start listening to all the other good 80s thrash bands. Then it would just spiral from there. The Black Album really helped metal as a whole.
Its the same with bands like In Flames now. People listen to em, then listen to their 90s stuff, then listen to all the other melodeath bands, then maybe get into more extreme stuff. So even if Metallica and In Flames suck ass now, it doesnt even matter as long as they're still bringing in new metalheads and those metalheads are smart enough to dig a little deeper into the genre. |
CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | Agreed. And I hope everyone knows I realize that this list is lolbad. |
CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | I really like The Jester Race from In Flames though. |
pand3m0nium
05.03.12 | I feel like I compiled this list, my gosh. |
KSK1
05.03.12 | 14 is still good. Anything else I would listen to from this would be only for nostalgia purposes. |
KSK1
05.03.12 | Also, my friend showed me that new Atreyu album like 2 weeks ago and it may be the worst thing i've ever heard. Not even kidding it was that bad. |
DrMaximus
05.03.12 | I used to listen to so much of this shit, its not even funny |

05.03.12 | "Well if you were a kid in the late 90s it was impossible to avoid Nu Metal. Much like it is for kids now to avoid metalcore. Cept Nu Metal was 10x more mainstream. CrimsonLies
05.03.12 | "and i dont really think i get the point of the list are you trying to tell us you were a faggot
cause thats ok"
No my point is that sometimes the generic stuff helps you along the way to getting into heavier,
more creative music etc. This is just me going through the motions to eventually ending up to what I
listen to today.
If it wasn't for sucky bands such as these, I wouldn't be listening to bands such as The
Contortionist, Neurosis and Dark Tranquility. I needed to start with something generic before I
worked my way up.

Hubcool
05.23.12 | Children of Bodom and stuff like Devildriver got me into heavier music, really early on I guess nu metal like Drowning Pool also had an influence. And obviously, loads of metalcore to get used to vocals. |
ITsHxCTOASTER
05.23.12 | Dethklok got me into metal |
CrimsonLies
05.23.12 | Yes, thank you for pointing that out MetallicOpeth.
I needed to listen to metalcore first to get used to the screams.
