08.17.11 | It's a cool list, but I wish it were longer. And no love for Porcupine Tree? Or Cynic?
Mine would look totally different, but 2 and 3 would both be on there. |
TheArkitecht
08.17.11 | wow dude you're missing loads of quality prog rock albums, and 5 isn't even prog rock... |
Yuma310
08.17.11 | 5... Yes, but thats not rock... 1... No way is Lateralus better then Aenima EDIT didnt see the 2000 so all is forgiven but still 5 is outta place |
EonblueApocalypse84
08.17.11 | Agree to disagree. I think dillinger is extremely progressive. They are even labeled progressive on this site.
I limited it to five because it makes the decision more difficult. Being completely honest I would probably put Bedlam and Goliath on there as well but I wanted to limit it to one album per band.
When I think of prog rock bands I think of bands that think outside of the circle *insert picture of hand on genitalia*. Bands that aren't afraid of exploring new areas in music and mixing genres when they need to. No one can say dillinger doesn't accomplish this regardless of your personal feelings about the band. |
TheArkitecht
08.17.11 | I'm a big fan of dillinger, and I would agree there are elements of progressive tendencies in their music, but they're not a rock band, that's why they're kinda out of place on this list. |
EonblueApocalypse84
08.17.11 | Saying it does not make it so... |
EonblueApocalypse84
08.17.11 | The Dillinger Escape Plan

08.17.11 | Opeth where are thee |
EonblueApocalypse84
08.17.11 | Ever since I saw Opeth live and the lead singer started the show by saying "This next song is truly a masterpiece" I hated opeth... The song wasn't very good... |
Emim
08.17.11 | And yet you have Mastodon on here. |
EonblueApocalypse84
08.17.11 | yes I do? |
Masochist
08.17.11 | "Seems everything is progressive these days..."
Turns out, all you need to be "progressive" nowadays is an odd time signature or tempo change somewhere in one of your songs. Also, according to Sputnik, there has never been a bad "progressive" album beyond the year 1990. |
EonblueApocalypse84
08.17.11 | I think the progressive rock title in itself is retarded... if I had my way it would all just be called "rock" and people wouldn't try so hard to label everything, but this isn't a perfect world, and people label music, so I am attempting to work within the confines of what is considered at this point in history "Prog" rock.
I think the gold standard for something being called prog is lots of arpeggios
For example: The receiving end of sirens- Considered progressive rock- take away arpeggios- Emo |

08.17.11 | I like to drink beer and rock the fuck out m/. |
benkim
08.17.11 | This is actually a great list but 5 really does look out of place. |
IrishJay91
08.17.11 | yea, whether they're progressive or not, TDEP aren't really rock at all
idk, it seems like progressive has just sorta become synonymous with 'not derivative and awful' |
OrangeHologram
08.18.11 | DEP are mathcore guise |
UnnamedOcean
08.18.11 | List needs moar Oceansize and Porcupine Tree. |
EonblueApocalypse84
08.18.11 | So, I understood that people would protest to me putting DEP on here, I kinda did it on purpose to force people outside of their traditional way of thinking of things.
It shares a lot of musical characteristics with Prog rock. I think if you made it an all instrumental group and just took out the vocals people would be fine with calling it Prog, but since there is a guy screaming on a lot of the tracks...
As far as porcupine tree and oceansize go, I limited myself to 5 spots and I like these albums more personally. |
RedRawPoetic
04.29.12 | I need something with less metalcore, more about the guitar and a great frontman, that's what a good prog band would sound like. |
