| The Boys ranked (so far) | 4 | | Morbid Angel Illud Divinum Insanus
S4 - This is pretty fucking far down on my list. For the first time in this show, it seemed to have a lot of filler, tons of pacing issues, and lazier commentary - it's not that the commentary had a very left wing slant or anything like that, it just didn't feel as clever as it did before. Also for a penultimate season, I needed a LOT more than just the final two episodes to really set the tension for the final season. The show always had gross out moments, but not to where it felt like they were dedicating entire episodes to those gags and moving at a snails pace with the shit that actually mattered. Still, episode 4 was one of my favorite episodes of all of the seasons and the last two eps were great. I just think this needed like several rewrites. | 3 | | Eminem The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)
S3 - If it weren't for the lack of payoff in the finale, this would definitely be my favorite season out of all four of them so far. The highs here were the biggest highs, but it's hard for me to get over the fact that the payoff was relatively weak considering what the build up felt like we were reaching towards. This was the kind of storyline that really warranted a major change in the whole series, or character death or SOMETHING. Still fantastic, I just have a grudge against it and rewatching it now just leaves me wishing it had more of a crushing finale. | 2 | | Eminem The Slim Shady LP
S2 - This season is also a banger. A+ villain in Stormfront, getting more into the nitty gritty of the characters, expanding the storyling, etc. This is just slightly below season 1 because it's not as tight imo, but it's a very minor complaint and it's basically tied with season 1 for me, but I had to pick one of these for the number 1 spot. | 1 | | Eminem The Marshall Mathers LP
S1 - Everything here works, and it's not just because it's exciting to see everything for the first time. The pacing worked, the commentary wasn't subtle by any means but it wasn't overly annoying yet and actually had some interesting things to say, writing was top tier for this kind of edgy show and actually better than the comics, etc. | |

07.18.24 | I do think Season 5 is going to be awesome, and basically at this point it should be all payoff.
I just wish I didn't have to sit through a season that was spinning its wheels for like 80% of the fucking time. | Gameofmetal
07.19.24 | I can't decide if the commentary is actually that much less subtle or clever now, it's hardly even a farce anymore since the reality of america is simply that dire and outrageous. Firecracker's propaganda show is not exaggerated in the slightest, that's just actually what far right conspiracy grifters say.
But yeah the season felt pretty uneven and the gore/gross outs was annoying. Too much focus on being shocking. I wasn't bored or anything though. | DarkSideOfLucca
07.19.24 | No it's definitely not less subtle, they were always basically telling you what they believed. But for some reason, it felt less obnoxious. I can't explain it beyond just "quality of writing" but the presentation was less annoying, even when I didnt personally agree with some of the politics even back in like season 1. It's hard to explain.
In terms of writing, even Sage's dialogue should have been way more articulate. She just talked like an average person, but her vocabulary/analogies and intellect should have been like Watchmen level dialogue for Christ sake, I didnt get "smartest person in the world" vibes from her lol
Agreed on Firecracker though.
Also what in the fuck are her powers? I just saw a whole season with her and all I know is that she can snap sparks. | Emim
07.19.24 | Haven't even watched the current season. 3 my interest was already waning hard.
Bring on Invincible season 3 🙏 | Gyromania
07.19.24 | It absolutely is obnoxious af. Just think back to the scene with the dude shouting “Abortion is murder” and Huey telling him to fuck himself. That whole scene was the most contrived shit I’ve ever seen in this show lol. Earlier seasons 100% mocked both sides, while clearly skewing left. I’ve seen a lot of people disagree with this and honestly think they’re just delusional. The politics were never exactly subtle, but they were displayed with a bit more wit and intelligence than season 4.
Ordering of this list is 100% accurate | Gyromania
07.19.24 | Also sage just seems like some cringe too-cool-to-care Reddit mod. Amping her up as “the most intelligent person on the planet” was a rly stupid move. When someone is touted as being the smartest in their universe, they better be written in a believable way. Look at characters like House, Sherlock, Hannibal: we never question their intellect because we believe they’re as smart as everyone says they are. Nothing about Sage says smartest person alive to me. Really awful writing on their part imo. | onionbubs

07.19.24 | This show seemed like it would be right up my alley but I peaced out after S2. Awful writing, no idea what to do with half of the characters. Borderline unwatchable garbage, the only 2 things it had going for it was Homelander was entertaining and it was the first time I considered Karl Urban an actual actor. I can only imagine how dumb this show has gotten in the past 2 years | Gameofmetal
07.19.24 | On the idea of them mocking both sides, in previous seasons the (loosely speaking) left wing critiques were like the unspecific union of both major political wings using supes for their imperialist purposes, killing terrorists etc. Im sensing that a lot of people would characterize their skewering of hollow, bad faith progressivism in the Vought products as liberal/left shots, which it shouldn't be. This is in fact a critique grounded in the left aimed rightward. | DrGonzo1937
07.19.24 | 1 is 1, the rest is hot trash | anotherdimension
07.19.24 | They're all great. If I had to put them in order it would be 4>3>1>2, but ask me again in a year or so and it might change. I thought the last few episodes of S4 were phenomenal and Gen V helps set up S4 and gives it an extra layer of storytelling. | Gyromania
07.19.24 | Game: fake corporate girl boss feminism is made fun of and exposed as a fabrication of vought. Did you miss that entire multi season theme? Ashley even said Disney is trying to hire her, and Voughtland is clearly a satirization of Disney and their exploitation of liberal values. There are some obvious parts where basically every girl hero on the show is fed up with being treated like some kind of puppet for corporate to play empowerment buzzwords and feminism with. Also I found that most of the A Train storyline makes fun of how the left and the corporate world especially uses fake BLM black power images and marketing but it’s all totally fake and profit driven just like the real BLM and Hollywood. If the response to that is that it’s just the right’s interpretation of the left then that’s a huge writing fail. | Ryus
07.19.24 | first season was stupid but kind of fun
i gave up partway thru season 2 | Gameofmetal
07.19.24 | Yeah but these aren't criticisms of ideological progressivism and feminism, it's a critique of the fundamentally ideology-less businesses that exploit them, see the later seasons where they pivot towards the far right. Disney doesn't have an ideology, it would appeal to fuckin nazis if they were the american norm.
I fear the acknowledgement that it's pandering yet also a true ideology cannot coexist. And I guess on the BLM point I think it's pretty bad faith to bring up the org as if it's the more important holder of that name than the broad, sincere social movement of literally millions of protesters against the shooting of unarmed black men. |
