Metal Genres ranked

Fight me, bro
14DragonForce
Sonic Firestorm

Power metal - Nerd metal for nerrrrddsssss (this is prob actually better than Industrial metal for me but I'm too lazy to copy and paste for the 9 millionth time)
13Pig Destroyer
Prowler in the Yard

Grindcore - I know that this is probably an unpopular opinion here, but this shit is more unpleasant to me than black metal. I love short heavy tracks, but not when its like fucking 10-30 seconds and just 1-2 riffs, random screeching (barely even a verse) and thats it times like 30 times per album. I just don't get it. Outside of Pig Destroyer and Napalm Death (both of whom I love) I just don't see the appeal at all. I hate when people say "metal is just noise" but grindcore is really just noise to me. First track - RUHRAHRAHHH, BANG BANGBANG done, next track AHHHH BANG BANG, done. It's like a fucking meme of metal, random yelling and banging and basically no actual songs.
12Darkthrone
A Blaze in the Northern Sky

Black Metal - I know I'm going to get shit for this, but I've tried with this genre like at least once a year for the past 20 something years. Some albums really REALLY stuck, like a couple of Darkthrone, Dissection, Emperor and Satyricon albums but for the most part this is like the opposite of what I enjoy. High pitched annoying vocals, pretentious bullshit and intentionally trash production. It's trve metal rawwrr I get it, but I just don't give a shit. It's such a struggle to sift through all of this unpleasantness.
11Fear Factory
Demanufacture

Industrial Metal - Strapping Young Lad and Fear Factory are some of my favorite metal bands of all time, but I basically only listen to like 4 bands in this genre. For that reason, I can't justify ranking it higher than this.
10Kalmah
Swampsong

Melodic Death Metal - Now when I have the itch for it, this genre really scratches it. And if I was in high school, this would be like #3 for me, but tbh the genre as a whole is a bit one note and I have to REALLY be in the mood to listen to it. I still do bump old Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility, Kalmah, Skyfire and some others, though.
9Korn
Follow the Leader

Nu-Metal - Outside of Metallica, Fear Factory and Slayer, is all I listened to in the 90's. This is all I really knew existed, so you can imagine the intense amount of nostalgia I have towards this genre. It's incredibly fun, but also mostly stupid outside of a few classics like LD50 and Toxicity. Even though it was gimmicky, I like that every nu-metal band basically had their own theme (sci-fi Powerman 5000, horror Rob Zombie, etc). It was basically the pro-wrestling era of metal. I often go back and bump nu-metal albums like Nothingface, Sevendust, Static-X, old Slipknot, American Head Charge, etc. Cheesy dumb fun.
8Moonsorrow
Verisäkeet

Viking/Folk metal - If there were more bands that I listened to in this genre, it would def be higher up. Even though I have zero Nordic genes, this shit makes me want to grab a sword and shield, head into battle and die for Odin.
7Botch
We Are the Romans

Metalcore - Now if you asked me in high school, I would scoff at you and say "pshhh this isn't REAL metal." But now that I'm not a metal-archives human incarnate, trying to prove to every non metalhead in the world how metal I am, I realize how much this genre has to offer. So much emotion, crushing breakdowns and an actual surprising amount of variety to be found. Have only been listening to this genre for about 5ish years now, but it's great.
6Dream Theater
Images and Words

Progressive Metal - My top 25 albums of all time have much more progressive metal in there than one would think, having this at #6. When it's good, it's some of the best music of all time. But when it's NOT amazing, it's 20 minute long songs of cheesy wankfest nonsense, often over an hour in length per album with really out there concepts. I don't have time to waste on 2 hour long concept albums that AREN'T some of the best of all time, so when this genre wastes my time I fucking feel it more than anything except for post metal. Points for expanding my mind beyond nu-metal, though.
5Judas Priest
Painkiller

Heavy Metal - So many classics here, of course. I don't listen to this as much as I used to, but goddamn do I respect it. Most of these acts really respected the craft and were at least semi-competent at their instruments. When you take into account the creativitiy this took in the 70s and 80s when nothing sounded like this, it's insane. Mad respect for many of these guys still rocking out live when they should be spending time with their grandchildren. m/
4Crowbar
Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form

Sludge/Doom - Now I just really started giving this genre a chance a year or two ago. At first the super slow nature of it made me think it wasn't really up my alley. Boy, was I wrong. I lift to this musc MUCH more than thrash metal nowadays. This shit makes me feel like The Mountain from Game of Thrones. This is basically shove protein in your face, start a BBQ and bathe in beer metal. In other words, one of my all time favorite genres.
3Megadeth
Rust in Peace

Thrash - Basically all of the best "classic" heavy metal bands imo. Even outside the big 4, you get shit like Coroner, Exhorder, Power Trip and Demolition Hammer just smashing your face in. The punk rock aesthetic just makes you want to punch your neighbor in the face but in the friendliest way possible. It makes you want to party and also mosh around, even if you're at work with a suit and tie on. We need MORE new thrash metal, goddamnit. MORE I SAY!
2Cryptopsy
None So Vile

Death Metal - At this point, it's been fucking decades of consistent perfection. So many fucking awesome subgenres within death metal, an uncountable amount of classics and just the most badass out of all the genres. I wouldn't even know what band to reference here, there are so many. 10/10 atmosphere, 10/10 brutal instrumentation, 10/10 creativity, etc.
1Meshuggah
The Violent Sleep Of Reason

Meshuggah - They're basically their own genre and it's the best thing ever. I know some people think their djent, but that wasn't even a thing until after I graduated college. None of the actual "djent" bands sound like these guys outside of them having 8 string guitars. Gods of metal right here m/
