| Ranking Fugazi openers
haven't seen anyone talk about their second favourite 90s phxc band uh olay | 7 | | Fugazi Steady Diet of Nothing
Exit Only
as with the rest of Steady Diet, I tend to forget about this one exists. the main groove is swag, but it chases its tail a fair bit. don't get the sense of Something Starting until those all too short bursts of power chords right at the end | 6 | | Fugazi End Hits
Break
just two minutes to set out End Hits' lackadaisical wavelength while teasing enough punk elbowwork to ensure you're listening in your blood as well as your brain? Break, uh delivers! to the letter! and then it is over. cool. the low placement feels inadvertent rather than deserved - this is a solid opener, just lacks the stature of the rest of the list (Place Position delivers this perfectly though, might have been fairer to consider the pair as one entry) | 5 | | Fugazi Repeater
Turnover
ever heard a punk track get out of bed, get dressed, skip breakfast and trudge to work resentfully? well, uh, that's one extra reason never to underestimate the trove of innovation post-hardcore made its name on! Turnover suffers from sharing its name with a mediocre emo band and from its sluggish verse/chorus combo building up more tension than the blowout in its bridge can meaningfully relieve, but then again the bulk of this album is built on leering coldly and constantly stepping sideways rather than delivering straight bangers - it's the story of fugazi trying a little too hard to prove they could be more than those, and, uh, they could! iconic track | 4 | | Fugazi 13 Songs
Waiting Room
catchy tune but it's no mr brightside | 3 | | Fugazi In on the Kill Taker
Facet Squared
stomps and slaps like a pissed mule dishing out high-fives, and even has the decency to include a short(ish) buildup: literally what more do you want from an opener? lacks a little character compared to the highest entries, but goes hard enough not to need it | 2 | | Fugazi The Argument
Cashout
this song is revoltingly slick and a worthy calling card for the Argument's mission to prove that those pasty no-good alt rockers could make real music and bring about real change if they put high school and their shitty first job behind them and learned to fucking groove for once, but then it spoils it all with a big sloppy chorus that conveniently blocks it from the top of the podium and leaves it to languish in silver medal shame. is this hyperbole? shut the fuck up, it's tough at the top | 1 | | Fugazi Red Medicine
Do You Like Me
yes the song proper is a sassy ripper (maybe picciotto's finest?) but that stupid lofi noise intro alone warrants top placement so | |

05.06.25 | you are welcome
next list in this chain must EITHER rank jesus lizard openers OR rank all unwound against all fugazi openers within their respective chronologies i do not make the rules | tectactoe
05.06.25 | Really the only thing that matters here is that 7 is 7 and you got that correct. The other six are all so QUALITY that the order is hardly relevant. Wouldn't or couldn't (and shouldn't) be mad about any hypothetic ordering of 1 thru 6, that's simply how good they all are.
Though if forced to split hairs, 1 would very possibly be my 1 as well. Turnover and Break would be higher, Facet Squared lower. But again, it's like... idk, ranking favorite M&M colors or something. | tectactoe
05.06.25 | and for the record, TJL:
1. Boilermaker
2. One Evening
3. Then Comes Dudley
4. Fly on the Wall
5. Blockbuster
6. Hide & Seek
7. Thumper
8. I Can Learn | JohnnyoftheWell
05.06.25 | bump Thumper to 4 tbh, huge song (and only the top 4 matter for TJL, just needed a same time/same discog length contender) | artificialbox
05.06.25 | +1 for Do You Like Me.
I think I’m gonna have a Fugazi marathon today | zakalwe
05.06.25 | 4 is clearly 1 | Flashmobba
05.06.25 | yea 4 has to be 1, 6 is too low, and did you call Cashout’s chorus sloppy? You deserve a paddling | JohnnyoftheWell
05.06.25 | 4 bangs but no way is it their best opener unless you're cruising on herd mentality. not in my thinking man's flagship hardcore band! | gabba
05.06.25 | 1 is 1 no doubt. But the placing of Break is criminally low imo, its short runtime is full of playfulness and variation, the bass-drum combo will never stop to put a huge smile on my face. I love Cashout, but as noted earlier somewhere, MacKaye’s Anthony Kiedis impression on the verses is too strong to be ignored. | CugnoBrasso
05.06.25 | People who think that Waiting Room is Fugazi's best song are the same people who think that Twin Peaks is the best thing David Lynch ever directed. | brendanissnaz
05.06.25 | Cashout is top. | widowslaugh123
05.06.25 | Break
Facet squared
Turnover
Cash out
Waiting room
Do you like me?
Exit only | CugnoBrasso
05.06.25 | Ranking Embrace openers:
1. Give me back | tectactoe
05.06.25 | Real ones know that Lynch's finest work is ERASERHEAD. (MULHOLLAND DRIVE and BLUE VELVET would also be acceptable answers, tho.) | CugnoBrasso
05.06.25 | tectactoe, you're talking with a proud Eraserhead bluray owner. | tectactoe
05.06.25 | The Criterion packaging is so nice. | Flashmobba
05.06.25 | no, Mulholland Drive is easily the best thing he ever directed. And I didn’t say it’s their best song, I said best opener. | DoofDoof
05.06.25 | So best Fugazi has the best opener.
Saying all that, I'd choose 'Facet Squared' or 'Waiting Room' as my favourite Fugazi opener. | JohnnyoftheWell
05.06.25 | broke: twin peaks
woke: mulholland drive
bespoke: twin peaks the return
eraserhead is acceptable recourse for anyone who lacks the attention span to read kafka ig | DoofDoof
05.06.25 | yeah, the answer to that one is Eraserhead | CugnoBrasso
05.06.25 | Red Medicine = 5th best Fugazi.
Inland Empire is a good movie. | JohnnyoftheWell
05.06.25 | Inland Empire is his End Hits yh | gabba
05.06.25 | Best Lynch opener is Pinky’s Dream (feat. Karen O), even though Trentemøller’s remix is even better than the original.
If we rank Lynch openers by their cinematic value, then it’d be Side A from the Eraserhead Soundtrack.
But if we rate his movies based on opening titles, then it’s Lost Highway with I’m Deranged. | tectactoe
05.06.25 | End Hits is a great album. Inland Empire is the result of a man surrounded by people who lacked the courage to inform him that his head had indeed gone too far up his own ass.
Eraserhead is superlative in so many ways. Peak set design. Peak sound design. Peak character (or whatever you want to call that fucking thing) design. Peak grotesque evocation of the anxiety and trepidation of entering parenthood for the first time.
Inland Empire is Lynch's version of late-era Woody Allen miscarriages like WONDER WHEEL or MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT - a once-great director desperately trying (and failing) to capture a joie ne se quois that very clearly departed from their arsenal many moons ago. | FowlKrietzsche
05.06.25 | 1 is 1, no notes | cylinder
05.06.25 | 2 is their best song | PitchforkArms
05.07.25 | idk, I am a patient boy is all time level intro line | JohnnyoftheWell
05.07.25 | your eyes like crashing jets >> | BMDrummer
05.08.25 | turnover all day |
|
