01.03.19 | give me console wisdom plz |
Underflow
01.03.19 | Persona 5 easily |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.03.19 | Reasons? |
Underflow
01.03.19 | -Well-written characters you'll fall in love with
-Game feels relevant to the times we're living in
-Bang for your buck. My first playthrough took over 100 hours. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.03.19 | Consistency, surely!
Anyway, I'm intrigued but for the sake of mutual intrigue what are your vibes on Nier? |
DORBUSCUS
01.03.19 | I havent played Persona 5 yet but I can strongly say that you'll be happy with either one of them. NieR is more action oriented, while Persona from what I've seen is more story driven. Honestly you can't go wrong with both |
DORBUSCUS
01.03.19 | Have you played Gravity Rush 1 and 2? They're both japanese action games and they're also great |
J() Alexander
01.03.19 | Persona doesn't let you do cool combos and it doesn't have 2B so Automata wins.
But tbh I haven't played any of those so... Eh. I liked NieR tho. |
J() Alexander
01.03.19 | Oh yeah, the Gravity Rush games are pretty cool too.
Or, if you haven't played them yet, you can buy some Yakuza. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.03.19 | Oh boy all the options coming out now
Haven't played Gravity Rush, do they have much of a narrative going on? |
brainmelter
01.03.19 | haven’t played persona 5 but I can definitely recommend nier automata |
SteakByrnes
01.03.19 | Both are phenomenal games, I'd say Persona 5 is the best choice tho |
DORBUSCUS
01.03.19 | Yea they have a solid story. There's tons of games i could recommend to you on PS4. Uncharted, God of War, A Hat In Time, Injustice 2, Titanfall 2, Spider-Man, I could go on forever |
J() Alexander
01.03.19 | Gravity Rush doesn't have a lot of narrative, it's just really fun videogames that I could play for a long time but if you aren't into that and want more narrative... Well, buy Persona. But if all you want is getting lost in gameplay, I hope you already have the best game ever made (talking just about gameplay, of course). |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.03.19 | Aha namely? Surely not Bloodborne [;
@DORBUSCUS Unchartered isn't my vibe (wasn't sold on the story, writing or characters and they felt like the main attraction), God of War looks awesome but also a little too close to the stuff I've been playing, and I'll have a look over the others |
Frippertronics
01.03.19 | Nier, by a country mile. Especially if you're concerned about story, Nier's story is more interesting than P5's, which starts out great then takes a nosedive 3/4ths into the game. Both have good replay value, although you can get a lot more done in Nier that will benefit you in the long run. |
J() Alexander
01.03.19 | Well the game with the best gameplay in the history of videogames so far is obviously and I don't know know why that's even a question DEVIL MAY CRY 4: SPECIAL EDITION WITH A TOTAL OF FIVE CHARACTERS AND EVERY SINGLE ONE HAS MECHANICS THAT ARE COMPLEX AND DEEP AS FUCK GOING FROM REALLY FUCKING DEEP TO "HOW THE FUCK IS THIS DUDE CALLED DANTE EVEN REAL" DEEP... The game wasn't finished in terms of levels and probably story so you fight against the same enemies a lot but WHO CARES ABOUT THAT WHEN YOU HAVE SOME HARDCORE GAMEPLAY BABY HELL YEAH!... But if you aren't into GAMEPLAY too much I guess you can just not play it... |
Frippertronics
01.03.19 | less obnoxious all caps please thx
also DMC4's gameplay is far inferior to 3 |
J() Alexander
01.03.19 | "less obnoxious all caps please thx"
Alright, alright.
"also DMC4's gameplay is far inferior to 3"
Excuse me, what? Like, I know DMC3 has more enemies, it is better designed and all that stuff, but DMC3 Dante is nothing compared to DMC4 Dante. |
Source
01.03.19 | You should buy
Just Cause 4 |
GreyShadow
01.03.19 | I just started Nier recently and it's great but P5 abducted my life. get that. |
DORBUSCUS
01.03.19 | Doom is also amazing, if you want no gameplay but an amazing story, Detroit Become Human is top notch stuff, Witcher 3 is great |
Gyromania
01.03.19 | honestly get either of them and then buy the other when you have the money. they're both masterpieces |
Frippertronics
01.03.19 | "Excuse me, what? Like, I know DMC3 has more enemies, it is better designed and all that stuff, but DMC3 Dante is nothing compared to DMC4 Dante."
Because 3 is better in every single way? Because the gameplay is far more satisfying? If you had an actual choice to give someone who hasn't played a DMC game, 3 would be the game to play, hands down. |
Gyromania
01.03.19 | how could anyone seriously argue that dmc4 is better than dmc3. that's like saying the witcher 1 is better than witcher 3 |
DORBUSCUS
01.03.19 | I like dmc4 in terms of gameplay more than dmc3 |
SteakByrnes
01.03.19 | DMC3 is the best in the series |
Space Jester
01.03.19 | DMC4 is clearly unfinished and overall a less satisfying game than 3 but there’s no way I’m not going to say that 4’s combat doesn’t improve on 3’s in a lot of ways. If 5 takes what they improved on in 4 even further and also y’know finishes the fucking game before they release it, it could easily be the best in the series |
J() Alexander
01.03.19 | Yeah, for starters 3 is the best option because they probably don't even know what jump canceling is and for them 4 is just an unfinished game that they can't play properly if they don't put a good amount of time into it. 3 is better than 4 in more than one way of course, but when it comes to gameplay and mechanics 4 is infinitely better just by having something as simple as style switching for Dante. |
J() Alexander
01.03.19 | Like if you think 3 is a better game overall that's cool but how can anyone even argue that 4 has inferior gameplay? |
Gyromania
01.03.19 | darius i will smack the shit out of you |
SteakByrnes
01.03.19 | |
Saros
01.03.19 | I'm going to say Persona 5 on the basis that I haven't played Nier: Automata yet (mostly due to me having so many other games to play). I've heard plenty of good things about it though and it seems plenty of people in this thread can vouch for me. |
killerK1
01.03.19 | I loved both, but gotta go with Persona. I think Nier had a better story, Persona's started going down a bit later on in the game but I enjoyed Persona's gameplay (yea i prefer a turned based rpg bite me) and I loved Persona's characters and social activities. So yea, Persona. Both were great games and worth a playthrough. |
SteakByrnes
01.03.19 | Both games slap massive dick, so I mean just get both tbh |
Saros
01.03.19 | Also while we're on the subject of Japanese action games, Yakuza 0 is great. It's pretty story heavy and the gameplay is standard beat 'em up fare with a fair amount of hype moves, but it's a story that you can get hooked on and leave you wanting more at every turn. It's probably the best story in the series and it's a prequel to the entire series so you can just jump into it with zero knowledge of Yakuza. Highly recommended. |
Gyromania
01.03.19 | keeping in line with japanese games, make sure to check out nba2k19 too |
Veldin
01.03.19 | definitely play both, but I enjoyed Persona 5 a lot more overall. Easily one of the best JRPGs ever. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.03.19 | Snagged a cheap copy of Nier but will definitely look out for Persona 5 in the future |
Minushuman24
01.03.19 | I wish that I could comment on this debate, but I have not played nier. I will say that persona 5 is incredible and worth the time you have to put into it. |
Demon of the Fall
01.03.19 | All I know is that although the story takes a while to get going & the ‘everyday nature’ of the tasks/real world can get tedious that Persona’s battle system & game-play mechanics seem highly nuanced/interesting after 20 hours. Maybe it’s just managed to confuse me into thinking that way because I don’t understand everything yet. |
Masochist
01.04.19 | Ultimately, you won't go wrong with either choice, so I'll say this: if you want what is without-a-doubt the best turn-based JRPG of this generation, with social simulation built-in and a huge cast of characters you're going to care about, go Persona.
If you want a game with superlative gameplay and ultra-slick fighting mechanics, that makes you feel like an absolute boss dodging and weaving and slicing and dicing, and a huge world to freely explore, go with Nier: Automata.
Either way, you're going to get one of the top 3 gaming soundtracks of this generation. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.09.19 | Well FUCK me Nier was a devastating final third |
Space Jester
01.09.19 | You went through that fast |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.09.19 | Wasn't the longest game but yes haha I did |
theacademy
01.09.19 | p5 ez |
Space Jester
01.09.19 | I just dl’d 2B in Soul Calibur 6 so now I’m gonna use her outfit and make a whole YorHa unit line |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.09.19 | Aww hell yeah |
Demon of the Fall
01.09.19 | Any good? I haven’t played Soul Calibre in soooo long. |
Space Jester
01.09.19 | It’s the best since 2 probs
Way better than the trash that was SC5 |
WatchItExplode
01.22.20 | By final third do you mean after the 9s playthrough? Cuz I'm a bit past that and things got super intense all of a sudden. My 9s turn was almost meditative. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.22.20 | Yup! Agree with the latter part as well - the 9S playthrough is like a chill way of reflecting on the 2B playthrough and getting into his character a bit more, then the plot hits the fireworks big time |
WatchItExplode
01.22.20 | I'll push through then. I noped out last night trying to get bugged out 2b to safety. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.22.20 | Oh.
You'd better strap yourself in. |
SteakByrnes
01.22.20 | Both games slap so hard |
WatchItExplode
01.22.20 | Just tell me if I can make it to the designated zone or something else has to happen please. I was getting punished repeatedly in my attempts. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.22.20 | You can make it! |
Observer
01.22.20 | I hated persona 5. Its long and has a good bit of depth and things to do, but the dialogue is repetitive and literally makes up half the game time.
I have Neir Automata but haven't played it yet. I do recommend divinity os1 and 2 if you havent played. |
Pikazilla
01.22.20 | Get Xenoblade Chronicles |
Demon of the Fall
01.22.20 | @Observer: yeah I really like certain aspects of Persona, but man is some of the dialogue getting to be a real drag by this point. |
WatchItExplode
01.22.20 | Divinity OS is fantastic. Waiting for a sale of OS 2. Love CRPGs in general. Tides of Numenara was one I recently enjoyed. Trying to get into Pillars of Eternity atm.
Thanks Johnny! |
Space Jester
01.22.20 | DMC3 on the Switch gonna have instant style switching holy shit |
SteakByrnes
01.22.20 | Persona 5 is top 5 game of all time for me |
parksungjoon

parksungjoon
06.14.20 | why not |

Gallantin
06.14.20 | U should use gog |
parksungjoon
06.14.20 | meh |
Gallantin
06.14.20 | I mean its the best launcher and game shop on PC idk why you wouldn't use it. Better sales than Steam, no DRM, Galaxy unifies all your gaming collections into one (including consoles if you have em), plus the widest range of old school PC games you can find these days. And most of em go on sale regularly for literal cents. Just last month I bought all the Legacy of Kain games and Daikatana for less than $5 |
parksungjoon
06.14.20 | yea idk why u think i dont know this
just dont game enough to care to switch to a different service at this point |
Gallantin
06.14.20 | Way to be a poser |
parksungjoon
06.14.20 | what can i say, i already put in my time when planescape: torment was fresh and game changing
dont have the patience anymore |
Gallantin
06.14.20 | What does that even mean
Don't have the patience for installing a game launcher that can unify all your games in less than ten minutes?
What does playing Planescape have to do with this
None of these launchers existed back then
You're killing my brain |
parksungjoon
06.14.20 | > Don't have the patience for installing a game launcher that can unify all your games in less than ten minutes?
dont have the patience to GAME much anymore
> What does playing Planescape have to do with this
just saying ive played more cult classics and hidden gems than anyone on this site probably. at least as far the pc platform it concerned anyway |
Gallantin
06.14.20 | Planescape aint even really a cult classic anymore, it's basically just a classic
You're not that unique because you played CRPGs in the 90s bro
Everyone's played those games
Anyway games are still cool and you should play them. That's why I recommend Disco Elysium, especially because you're into Planescape. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.14.20 | This Catherine full body game is coming to switch is it actually a good game or is it only a good game if you if ur a weeb ass pillow fucker who enjoys hentai dating sims |
parksungjoon
06.14.20 | > Everyone's played those games
yea thats why they barely sold a couple hundred thousand copies |
parksungjoon
06.14.20 | catherine isnt hentai afaik but i havent played it |
SteakByrnes
06.14.20 | I think Catherine Full Body is just an enhanced port but yea I'd recommend getting it, it's a fun puzzle game with that nice Atlus artstyle |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.14.20 | I didnt say it was |
Gallantin
06.14.20 | Yeah in the 90s they sold poorly.
The 90s were over 20 years ago my man, these games are all well know, well played, and all available on modern platforms. Planescape is on Nintendo Switch. Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the most hyped upcoming games. The age of obscure 90s gems going unnoticed is over. |
Gallantin
06.14.20 | I hear Catherine has some transphobic bullshit and honestly I have no interest in the puzzle bullshit. My weeb friend loves it tho and it seems to be beloved by most so idk if you dig the Persona games you might like it for the story and visual design. I am not interested in it tho. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.14.20 | I havent played persona games and I cant tell if they look good or wack af either lol |
SteakByrnes
06.14.20 | Persona games own |
Gallantin
06.14.20 | They have their ups and downs. Persona 5 is probs the most accessible but even that one has some really dumbass design choices that can actively harm the experience. The most annoying one being that if the MC dies in battle it's an instant game over, no chance to revive him with another character. And when enemies can attack first and One-Hit KO the MC after an hour of gameplay since the last save point, well...yeah that shit turns me right off. But Persona 4 just came out on Steam, commonly considered on of the best games ever, and it's cheap. Worth a go, I say. |
Gallantin
06.14.20 | BUT if you value your time, then be careful bc these games average like 100 hours in a regular playthru |
