2015 - 1/2 (Songs)
Some of my favorite songs so far this year. Not in a particular order, just throwing them out there! |
20 | Lupe Fiasco Blur My Hands
Gotta love the chorus of this song. So damn catchy.
Honorable mention: Mural |
19 | Prurient Christ Among the Broken Glass
Getting some Have a Nice Life vibes from this. Great music for a dark morning right before the destruction of earth.
Honorable mention: Jester in Agony |
18 | Bjork Lionsong
This song is pure class.
Honorable mention: Black Lake |
17 | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Piss Crowns Are Trebled
The beautiful climax to this great album.
Honorable mention: Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’ |
16 | Sufjan Stevens All of Me Wants All of You
Tough to pick a favorite, but this one has some lovely melodies that I just love.
Honorable mention: Fourth of July |
15 | Susanne Sundfor Memorial
While the album as a whole is probably her weakest album, this song is just gorgeous. Definitely a highlight for her.
Honorable mention: Fade Away |
14 | Steven Wilson Routine
For the most part I think the songs on this album are just good and few go higher than that, but Routine is something special. The highlight of the album and a lovely song.
Honorable mention: Ascendant, Here On... |
13 | August Burns Red Broken Promises
Just love how this song grooves.
Honorable mention: Ghosts |
12 | Faith No More Matador
This song really is just as good as the classic FNM highlights. Definitely a fine addition to their catalog.
Honorable mention. Separation Anxiety |
11 | Viet Cong Death
Gotta love it when an album ends on the highest note, with the best track.
Honorable mention: Silhouettes |
10 | Amplifier Mosaic
This feels good enough that it could have been an A-side on the debut or Insider. I really love Amplifier and this is another gem from them.
Honorable mention: Teen Vogue |
9 | Attalus Death Be Not Proud
The big climax of this wonderful album, and the track where it feels like everything is coming together. Just beautiful.
Honorable mention: Safe |
8 | Mew Rows
Amazing song and another strong epic by Mew. My only complaint is that the song goes on unnecessary long. If this had ended right after the beautiful keyboard-part around the 7-8 minute mark where it feels like a M83-styled blissful synth paradise, but instead the song kicks into gear again and has another minute or two with unnecessary upbeat rock stuff. Had it ended with the keyboard-part, I would have considered this on par with Comforting Sounds.
Honorable mention: My Complications |
7 | Sun Kil Moon This Is My First Day And I'm Indian And I Work At A Gas Station
Kozelek doing his thing, and the biggest highlight of the album for me. Classic Kozelek strumming his guitar, describing events of his life that has changed or impacted him, but may sound like small meaningless events to us. As great as the song is, my favorite part is the spoken word outro. Just love it.
Honorable mention: The Possum |
6 | Death Grips On GP
Not just the best song on the album, but probably my favorite DG song overall. Did anyone hear that piano cover on youtube? Immense shit.
Honorable mention: The Powers That B |
5 | Kendrick Lamar How Much a Dollar Really Cost
The whole album is awesome, but this is definitely my favorite.
Honorable mention: These Walls |
4 | Between the Buried and Me Memory Palace
Hard to pick a favorite on this album since I like it so much, but Memory Palace is a really great "final epic" on the album, and probably my favorite stand-alone track.
Honorable mention: Rapid Calm |
3 | mewithoutYou D-Minor
The combination of the great instrumentation and splendid lyrics makes this one a stand-out, but it's really the haunting melodies that gives this an edge for me.
Honorable mention: Birnam Wood |
2 | Vennart Infatuate
Probably the catchiest chorus of 2015 for me, this song pretty much has everything going for it.
Honorable mention: A Weight in the Hollow |
1 | Kamasi Washington The Message
A toss-up between this or The Magnificent 7. Both are amazing, but I just love how The Message perfectly closes the 3 hour journey that is The Epic.
Honorable mention: The Magnificent 7 |
