| My Expansive Musical Adventure
I live in a tiny town of about 700 people and am currently a freshman in high school. I live in the Midwest and am surrounded by people who only listen to Country, Pop, and Mainstream rap. I am one of the few people who was a more expansive musical taste. Yes, I realize that makes me sound like a giant hipster/douche. And just like any good hipster/douche, I hate it when people criticize my music. However, I recently realized how often I criticize other people's musical taste too. And this is where my adventure begins. | 1 | | Anberlin Cities
I sent out a text message to about 25 people asking them to burn me a copy of their 5 favorite CDs. I got many 'Why's?' in return. And my reason was basically what I said in the list description at the top of the list. | 2 | | Sleeping at Last Keep No Score
This is where the clincher comes in. I told them I was going to give them a copy of my favorite 5 CDs too. All of the people I texted knew the kind of music I listened to and just said ok. | 3 | | The Dangerous Summer Reach for the Sun
I knew right away maybe five people would listen to the CDs I sent them. I didn't really care. I've gotten 55 CDs so far, and have listened to about 40 of them. | 4 | | Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
I've enjoyed about 7. I mean, I've 'enjoyed' most of the pop ones as a one time novelty, but I don't see me listening to them again any time soon. However, I've listened to them objectively, and so now I can say I don't like them, and actually have reason to back up my opinion. | 5 | | Copeland You Are My Sunshine
I'm planning on continuing this experiment for a while. In about a week I'm going to text the first 25 people and asked if they listened to the CDs I sent them. I know what the response is going to be, but hey, maybe someone will surprise me? | |

12.24.11 | tl;dr. I went from being a hipster/douche to being a hipster/douche with a very pretentious project.
List is CDs I sent out | Blackbelt54
12.24.11 | neat project
but seems like a waste of time listening to albums you're not interested in | spillingmercury
12.24.11 | Oh man, 5. I got into them just as they were planning to break up, even though I knew about them for two years or so. Memories. First time I craved going to a concert.
It's a shame you're so conscious of this "hipster/douchebag" label just because you're into music. It's nice that you're trying be less judgmental and actually try to reason out why you like or don't like certain things. For some reason this stigma of elitism only applies to "hipsters," and yet being closed minded or pushy when it comes to music encompasses a broad horizon of people.
I'm actually really surprised you were listed back CDs though, because everyone I know seems to only listen to singles unless they're the type who becomes noticeably excited about music.
have fun with it though. | Fortheloveofmusic
12.24.11 | Blackbelt: I think I'm not interested in it, but sometimes choices surprise me. I got an Ellie Goulding CD and actually loved it, which surprised me.
Spillingmercury: I don't actually consider myself a hipster/douchebag haha. It's the label that sometimes gets applied to me when I criticize mainstream stuff. That's what part of the projet was, to try and convince people to look past their stereotypes and realize they can enjoy listening to more than one kind of music.
And yeah, alot of people said they didn't really own CDs, so I gave them the option of just giving me some of their favorite songs. | tkxxx7
12.24.11 | Interesting list/idea/username | Acanthus
12.24.11 | I can empathize, hometown of 500/600 here. | spillingmercury
12.24.11 | Well, yeah, I don't see you so far as someone who views themselves as that sort of person, more so one who's been subjected to being grouped in as such. But I get what you're trying to do, and I think it's pretty sweet. Good luck with it, hopefully you get a few willing to play along. I've had a few friends who've been willing to listen and share music with me, and slowly we've been opening up to each other because of that. It's always nice to see progress being made. | Fortheloveofmusic
12.24.11 | Well it seems even more now people are grouped according to music, style, a mixture of both. There are hipsters. scene kids, preps, hicks, wannabe-crips (there are sadly many of these at my school), the list goes on and on | spillingmercury
12.24.11 | I didn't realize there were Crips in the Midwest to emulate. the more you know. | Eko
12.24.11 | albums in the list rule, at least youre sending them good stuff | Fortheloveofmusic
12.24.11 | Haha well the Crips in the midwest are wannabe crips too, so I guess the correct term would be wannabe wannabe crips. But now I'm just confusing myself.
And thanks Eko, it was hard picking just 5 to send out | DinoX
12.24.11 | Cool project I also come from a very small town where everyone only listens to country, pop or mainstream hip-hop | clercqie
12.24.11 | Cool idea, might start something similar :) | Jones
12.24.11 | Very interesting project, what albums did you enjoy? | Fortheloveofmusic
12.24.11 | Well as I already mentioned, I really enjoyed 'Lights' by Ellie Goulding. The other four were 'Take Care' by Drake, The Band Perry's album (can't remember the name right now), 'Songs About Jane' by Maroon 5, and 'Where the Road Parts' by Chase Coy (can't see myself replaing that one much, however) | Adabelle
12.24.11 | That Maroon 5 album rules, but yeah, cool idea man. | Vespiion
12.24.11 | Very neat way to possibly find a band or two, and share the music you love with those who would likewise never hear them. | Vespiion
12.24.11 | Oh, and I've been jamming 3 a ton lately. Good stuff. | Hopeland
01.30.12 | This is a really awesome idea. My best male friends listen to metalcore and dubstep and my best female friends listen to country or nothing, so I don't think I'd really enjoy their top 5 cds. Cities and You Are My Sunshine are 2 of my favourites of all time, so good choices. Although, I actually like In Motion is Copeland's best.
Also, I've been a fan of Chase Coy for a long time and Where the Road Parts is actually a nice album. He doesn't get any recognition around here so it's nice to see someone else diggin' that album. |
