Superior Tech Death

for big-brained individuals

Warp Zone

One of the few tech death albums with an actual jazz-fusion vibe, thanks to Daniel Mongrain, who wrote some of the best songs on From Wisdom to Hate (Unearthing the Past and the title track). Riffs also rules and it grooves hard. Probably the best tech death album tbh, save for the Mike DiSalvo esque vocals

Speaking of the man, this one goes hard too. The solos especially rule, Cold Hate Warm Blood probably has one of the best in metal.

Under a Stone With No Inscription

Nice and melodic but also groovy and spidery. Very fun album.
4Spawn of Possession
Incurso

SoP have pretty consistently delivered the better end of the very frantic style of tech death that owes more to the BDM scene than the rest. Neo-classical melodies and nice clear production do this one a lot of good.

The Scepter of the Ancients

Before this band became boring, they made this album, which was good and had riffs and other good things.
8Decapitated
Winds of Creation

Definitely the meanest and techiest album in their discography. Songs like Blessed and Human's Dust really put the speed on and the more fundamental death metal sound works pretty damn well.

Illuminance

Better orchestrated and more tonally varied than other tech death albums, with moments that enter much more uplifting territory juxtaposed to more traditional death metal without doing the obnoxious "dweedle dee into breakdown" shtick

Antithesis

This band gets some flack for their very dense and over-intense style but this album is really catchy and fun for all of its rampant technicality.
11Cognizance
Inquisition

This band does all the things that other modern tech death bands do, but more neatly and entertainingly. Nothing special formulaicly speaking, but very solid. Inceptum is probably their best but all round this band has the right mix of dynamics and groove.

Insomuch as this qualifies. Definitely one of the best dm albums out there regardless.

Onset of Putrefaction (Re-issue)

Much better than Epitaph because this isn't extremely boring. Some great riffs and a bit more bite.

Illusive Golden Age

This one actually rules much more than I expected. The riffs are there but it's also a lot more dynamic than most.

Trilateral Progression

This band is a bit generic but this album still rules.

Individual Thought Patterns

Think this is probably the Death album with the most overtly "techy" sound. Some real classics here as ever, main highlights are the fantastic basswork and the Andy LaRoque solos
17Gorguts
The Erosion of Sanity

One of the early signs of Gorguts' inevitable rise as a progressive death metal bastion, The Erosion of Sanity gets weird at times, but is mostly a very solid and meaty death metal affair with some extra twists and turns in the guitar work. Some great dissonance here without going fully into the territory that Obscura would tackle.

Hallucinations

A classic example of utilizing well calculated technicality on top of a traditional death metal template - churning, mid paced, evil riffs set against bursts of wild technical guitar work.
19Alterbeast
Feast

Comperable to The Black Dahlia Murder, but definitely faster and with a greater emphasis on technicality. Much like that band Alterbeast are still quite catchy and operate a pleasantly melodic template for their music.
20Beyond Creation
The Aura

I know Snox made it fashionable (briefly unfashionable as well) to hate this band, but The Aura definitely has a bunch of killer moments. The guitars definitely are not the stars of the show so much as the amazing basswork, dynamic tempos, and strong songwriting.
21Hannes Grossmann
The Radial Covenant

Essentially a straight upgrade of Obscura (the band), their former drummer really finds a good sweet spot between progressive songwriting and common sense grooves, with some devilishly twisty riffs mixed in with churning low end ones.
22Quo Vadis (CAN)
Defiant Imagination

One of the thrashiest tech death bands, Quo Vadis really excel at the more melodic aspects of the genre, with some great guitar leads and some very Metallica-esque chord progressions. Strong, and highly accessible.
23Capharnaum
Fractured

It's easy to poke fun at Matt Heafy but his declaration that Warp Zone was one of his favourite albums seems to have rung true because this album definitely exhibits many of the same features, with neatly arranged songs with some common sense songwriting. Not quite as elegant, but still a solid and riffy album.
24Blotted Science
The Machinations of Dementia

No vox on this one but definitely super techy thanks to a bunch of the most overachieving instrumentalists around. Goes hard on some tracks and goes WeIrD on others but all around a good time with some really varied work from Jarzombek
25Cytotoxin
Radiophobia

It certainly dweedles and dees but there's just enough restraint on Radiophobia to help it all fall on the right side of the line. It's mean, heavy, and sometimes insanely fast, but it's also a lot more melodic than expected.
26Vipassi
Śūnyatā

Weird cross between the very airy atmsopherics of some modern prog metal and tech death, not in the kinda cheap Fallujah way. Some great riffs too and pretty decent at raising the intensity.
