| 7 Concerts Of 2011- Best To Worst
Based on band tightness, crowd interaction, vocal ability, stage presence, etc. | 1 | Fair to Midland w/Dead Letter Circus at the Troubadour
Best show I've been to hands down. FTM and DLC both had great setlists (except DLC didn't play my favorite songs: Big or Here We Divide.) DLC's rhythm section were the most fun to watch and they were super chill when I talked to them after. I wanted to tell the singer in Dead Letter Circus how much I worship his vocals but he had so many chicks around him as he was probably trying to get laid that night.. I can't blame him because if I had that accent I would be doing the same. Fair to Midland had an amazing setlist (opening with Whiskey and Ritalin going right into Walls of Jericho). Darroh stage dived a few times and it's pretty unreal to have your favorite vocalist screaming Riki Tiki in your face. I got to talk to their new drummer and he thought it was cool how I was miming all the drum parts. Too bad I almost lost my keys in the mosh pit. 10/10 | 2 | Manchester Orchestra/The Dear Hunter/White Denim at the Glasshouse
Twas a great show. Manchester picked a solid set of songs ranging from all 3 albums. Everybody sang the words and there was "light moshing" compared to Fair to Midland. The Dear Hunter I've seen three times this year and this was the last time. Albeit I was a little annoyed that they pretty much played the same set each time so I was kind of sick of hearing the Colour Spectrum live (let's hear some ACT I or II, Casey). White Denim is insane live! Street Joy is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard and I had to tell the bassist how amazing that song is. 9.8/10 | 3 | Thrice/La Dispute/Moving Mountains/O'Brother at the House of Blues
Thrice is one of the tightest bands I've ever seen live. This is the House of Blues Anaheim so their home crowd was welcoming to say the least. Craziest crowd ever. La Dispute was too gay for me. Moving Mountains I thought had potential and a cool sound. O'Brother played a great 30 minute set and once again were grateful when I talked to them and bought some merch. 9.8/10 | 4 | Rx Bandits/Fake Problems/Native at the House of Blues
It's a shame Rx Bandits broke up or stopped touring or whatever. This show was insane. Native was a post rockish post hardcorish band with a bunch of kids who looked like they were from Dazed and Confused or Smokey and the Bandit or something. I talked to the drummer after and told him he killed it. Fake Problems were a lot more poppy than Native. I dug their sound and listen to their stuff when I want to hear something catchy. Rx Bandits owned my face that night. It got a lot more moshy than I thought it would but eating a pot brownie and moshing don't really mix so I went over to the bar area and watched the rest of the set. 9/10 | 5 | The Dear Hunter/Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground/O'Brother
Until this show I never heard O'Brother but they won me over with their proginess (exactly the kind of band I want to play in). O'Brother are some of the most down to earth musicians I've ever met at a show. Kay Kay was an interesting band and they had one song that absolutely floored me. The Dear Hunter did a lot of Colour Spectrum stuff but they did some Act III and a couple off Act II so it was all good. Me and my girlfriend got to meet Casey and tell him how much we loved his music. 8.5/10 | 6 | Dredg/The Dear Hunter/Balance and Composure at the Roxy
Balance and Composure's not my thing, too angsty. Great stage presence though. This was the first time I saw TDH and it was awesome (lot of ACT III and II) Dredg was great except too many Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy songs... Gavin was being funny that night and made fun of the concept of encores. Their last song was "The Canyon Behind Her", a real treat live. 7.8/10 | 7 | ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead at the Glasshouse
What the hell? They picked some shitty opening bands. All of said bands had an annoying indie 4/4 beat in every song. I nearly puked. Trail of Dead were good, not great, as much as their albums are amazing. Conrad Keely is known to be an "off" live singer and my friend who accompanied me that night was probably confused. They had great banter between songs though and they did pick a good bunch (such as Will you smile again, Weight of the Sun, How Near How Far) But I wish they didn't play so much pre-Source Tags material. Only the die-hard fans get a kick out of that. 7/10 | |

12.30.11 | I went to the 2 and 3 shows when they were in South Florida. Great shows, both of them, I was just mad that when I saw TDH with Manchester, they didn't play ANY songs off of Red. I shit you not....and I was literally selling my soul to the devil earlier to get a shot at seeing "Deny it All" live. Thanks a lot Casey.... | CrownOfMagnets
12.30.11 | looks like Casey denied it all after all. |
