04.09.14 | thought I would have had trouble enjoying the anime since I'm generally not a fan of episodic anime but the stories were extremely beautiful and the art/soundtrack was ++
Ginko's one of my favourite protagonists but I do wish there was an episode where he questioned his morals. maybe season 2

04.09.14 | i just read a summary and im somewhat skeptical to watch
how many episodes should i watch before i realize i wont like it? my usual rule is three episodes but thats when i have no one to ask |
silentstar
04.09.14 | hmm, can't answer that for sure. what part of the summary is making you feel skeptical?
like, if you looked at my ranking, I put episode 2 as one of my favourites, so I would say that the quality of the episodes is pretty consistent (it's not like they start out bad and get better as time goes by)
since it's episodic, every episode has a different story but the main vibe is that there are these supernatural beings called Mushi which can influence human life in pretty crazy (and definitely interesting!) ways. the story is about this Mushi-scientist who goes from place to place and helps resolves Mushi-related issues. it sounds kind of plain but it's more about peoples' lives and not about solving some mystery.
I thought the first episode gave a good introduction to what the show is about, but if you don't like what is going on at all, I'd say not to bother with it. |
Rhyme
04.09.14 | i was skeptical because i didnt really understand the summary i read and it was kinda vague so it just made me confused~ but i definitely understand now based on your summary
if the first episode is a good indicator, then ill definitely give it a shot |
silentstar
04.09.14 | yeah, summaries + artwork are some of my worst enemies, since they're the only quick resource to getting an idea about the anime but they generally never do it justice.
I would have missed out on some pretty amazing anime (Uchouten Kazoku, Kemonozume, Steins; gate, Mushishi, Spice and Wolf) however, if I just based it off the summary. |
Rhyme
04.09.14 | good point, that's how i normally choose what i'm interested in watching but i know that i'll miss out on some great anime based on summary+artwork (never would've given madoka magica a chance that way). i don't always have the time to watch three episodes of an anime so asking someone who knows is the best way to know tbh |

04.09.14 | sounds sweet, will have to check it out after exams |

04.09.14 | "Ginko's one of my favourite protagonists but I do wish there was an episode where he questioned his morals."
biggest turn off in anime is when protagonists stand around and question their morals for 3 episodes straight while things explode in the background and ninjas are lobbing each others heads off like factory cattle
anyways i watched the first episode of this a while ago and wasn't sold, seemed like it was kinda boring and twinkly |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.09.14 | btw kemonozume or whatever is next on my list of things to watch
cuz its the same animators as tekkonkinkreet (best anime film of all time) and mind games (most fucking weird anime film of all time) |
Deathconscious
04.09.14 | im not big on most anime, theyre filled with annoying characters and childish dialogue geared at teenagers. but there are a handful of animes that i like and this is definitely one of them. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.09.14 | thats kind of a retarded overgeneralization tho |
Deathconscious
04.09.14 | lol its really not. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.09.14 | if you really think that then your entire life is a fallacy
i mean i agree that some anime has annoying characters and childish dialogue geared at teenagers but saying 'most' based off your narrow little perspective on what you've seen of an extremely massive medium yeah its a pretty retarded overgeneralization.
saying things like that about any medium is bound to come off as a retarded overgeneralization. |
Deathconscious
04.09.14 | most deathcore contains shitty songwriting and boring one-note chug-fests. i think thats a pretty accurate generalization as well. sorry, but some generalizations are true. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.09.14 | further reenforcing that your life is a fallacy. first off your saying that subjective generalizations can be 'true' or 'false' at this point and secondly your trying to narrow the breadth to a point that is ultimately untranslatable to anime. if you want to compare the anime to a genre like that, then you can use metal, not one of its sub genres. both have immense breadth, deathcore does not so its a much worse analogy. and their are many subgenres of anime as well. you can compare deathcore to chibi style anime bullshit for sure and then id agree with you but you are generalizing an umbrella term which is, as ive told you several times, remarkably retarded. |
Deathconscious
04.09.14 | "first off your saying that subjective generalizations can be 'true' or 'false'"
oops, sorry, forgot i have to say "imo" after every statement, this is the internet after all. oh yeah, dont forget the melodrama, theres plenty of that in anime. |

04.09.14 | "biggest turn off in anime is when protagonists stand around and question their morals for 3 episodes straight while things explode in the background and ninjas are lobbing each others heads off like factory cattle"
haha, that wasn't what I meant though. the show is not about blatant rights and wrongs - it's not an issue of saving the world or anything of that like.
I mean, you said you only watched the first episode, so you probably didn't get a good grasp of what the show is going for but were you to finish the season, you would probably understand what I meant by "questioning his morals" - not much context is given behind the way he acts and since things ~generally~ tend to go well, I never felt like the protagonist was challenged mentally or was put in a situation where he had to act against personal intuition.

silentstar
04.09.14 | and it would definitely make sense that the artist for Mind Game did Kemonozume - the animation is extremely slick and flowy.
He also made an anime called The Tatami Galaxy - not sure if you'd like that one since it revolves around stories and dialogue rather than action but just figured I'd give you a heads up. |

04.09.14 | new series is gonna rule, hope that book girl comes back in it. |
silentstar
04.09.14 | have you seen Kino's Journey yet? you might want to give it a try - it's quite different in some ways (I'd say more philosophically inclined) but the main idea is generally the same. there's a traveller who goes from town to town and experiences the intricacies of that environment (in Kino's Journey, it's more about the different societies) |
Pheromone
04.09.14 | Back when I used to watch anime quite a lot I was going to watch it but I forgot it existed tbh, I'll check it out soon cheers! You ever watched Bartender? It's not an adventure anime but it's a really layed back anime about this bartender who solves peoples issues with cocktails. |
silentstar
04.09.14 | haha, sounds interesting! will put on my plan-to-watch list
I started Infinite Ryvius yesterday - it's apparently the Lord of Flies turned into anime. the premise seemed interesting but the characters are extremely bland and follow way too many cliches, so I don't know if I'll stick with it. |
Pheromone
04.09.14 | I haven't seen a new series in way too long. I was so interested in that new Ace Of Diamonds series but my mate dropped his crunchyroll subscription and I lost time to watch it and dropped it. The last show to interest me heavily is Texhnoylze which I just had to continue. |
silentstar
04.09.14 | right, you told me about that one. will probably be watching it this summer after exam time~ |
Pheromone
04.09.14 | I remember telling someone about it, you'd probably enjoy it. |

04.09.14 | Cool list. Most of the ones you noted were great (well really all of them were). My favorites are maybe the mail one (because it's the cleverest instance of worldbuilding), the rust one (sheer uniqueness of the concept), and the scribe one (I like her as a character). But yeah pretty much all of them are great.
I don't think having Ginko question his morals is necessarily the way to go, but I think in general more two-episode specials would be pretty cool. I really liked the OVA, and ones like the rebirth episode could have used more time. Having a few hour-long episodes where Ginko faces conflict, not in terms of his morals but because of his morals, would be pretty cool.
@People who want to watch this show, each episode is pretty much a self-contained vignette. It's kind of like House in that the MC is solving a problem each episode, but deals with strange situations due to the Mushi that seems reminiscent of the Twilight Zone. It always maintains a contemplative tone which makes it great to unwind on a Friday after classes end and before Friday night starts (in my experience) |

04.09.14 | "Having a few hour-long episodes where Ginko faces conflict, not in terms of his morals but because of his morals, would be pretty cool."
hmm, yeah, I could definitely see that working.
I think the main reason why I wanted an episode or two involving some uncertainty on Ginko's part was to show some character weakness - due to Ginko's role in this show, he never really reaches a point where he ever questions himself and I would have liked to see him face such a challenge - it would have been an interesting change of pace.
and @sleepdirt, you definitely should! it's filled with extremely interesting and thought-provoking episodes and it's easy to keep the anime on hold and come back to it, since they're episodic and don't follow from each other. |
toxin.
04.10.14 | Yeah I get what you're saying. I can agree a chance of pace is good, but I'm just not sure that the best way to implement one is through questioning Ginko's morals. The philosophy of the show is that mushi exist and humans should grow civilization around that fact (an environmentalist commentary I'm pretty sure) and Ginko's philosophy represents that and the show supports that. You can take that philosophy into question (esp. if you put something personal at stake where his philosophy would end up causing him personal harm, not that he really has any attachments) but unless you're going to do a thematic 180 you know exactly where the answer is ultimately going to be.
But yeah it's an excellent show but if I were to name a single flaw, it's that it can be same-y at times |
