| 10 Songs That Define You
These are 11 songs in no particular order that changed my life in some way. What are yours rsputnik? what songs made you into who you are today? | 11 | | Brand New Deja Entendu
Okay I Believe You but my Tommy Gun Don't. I actually like Devil and God a whole
lot better and depending on the day, Sowing Season could be my favorite song by
Brand New. That being said, Tommy Gun played a pretty huge role in developing my
musical taste and writing style. It seems like each instrument gets their own time
to shine and each new piece adds something interesting to keep the song alive. I'd
be willing to bet that everyone who listens to this song can't help but think about
something they used to love every time they hear it. How could you not? | 10 | | Animosity Animal
You Can't Win. I'm not sure if this is the first or second Death Metal song that I
ever heard but it sure made one hell of an impression on me. Right from the get go,
You Can't Win is just batshit insanity. Leo Miller is just one of those vocalists that
has it all. Piercing shrieks, menacing growls and even terrifying battle cries
apparently. To cap it all off is the legendary, curb-stompingly good breakdown. | 9 | | Sylosis The Supreme Oppressor
Turbulence. I still remember the first fucking time I heard this song. I was in 9th
grade seminar, bored as all fuck, listening to my ipod on shuffle. I had downloaded
the album at the recommendation of Metalstyles but the sound just didn't really
click with me and I had never made it as far as Turbulence. When this song came
on I had no idea what it was and it blew my fucking mind. Sylosis instantly went
from being some shitty band I had on my iPod to one of my favorite metal bands.
So much so that I reviewed The Conclusion of an Age mere days before Metalstyles
was going to and hijacked his spot (teehee) | 8 | | La Dispute Somewhere At the Bottom of a River...
Damaged Goods. Like many of the songs on this list, this was the song that brought
me to the band. I was pretty disappointed that they didn't play this live when I saw
them but it was such a legendary show that I couldn't really complain all that
much. Damaged Goods is basically a fucking how-to guide on how to write a shit
ton of awesome riffs. The schizophrenic vocal battle never ceases to give me chills.
In addition to bringing me to La Dispute, Damaged Goods also brought me to
hardcore in general and opened the pathway for bands like Defeater and The
Carrier. | 7 | | Katatonia The Great Cold Distance
Deliberations. This is the song that got me into Katatonia. I now have five of their
albums which I rotate on a very regular basis. As a musician, their sound has been
instrumental in my writing process. Deliberations is the perfect mixture of haunting
industrial soundscapes meshed with energetic riffing and vivid lyricism. | 6 | | The Gaslight Anthem Handwritten
Biloxi Parish. Not the album version, the live demo that they performed before
releasing the album. I'll never for the life of me understand why the took out the
best verse in the song and replaced it with a silly bridge that completely bails on
the rest of the song's narrative. I'll never get over it. Though this song is a lot
newer than the others, the lyrics hit me right in the feels. There is a girl out there
who I feel pretty much exactly this way about. Sigh. | 5 | | Fireworks All I Have to Offer is My Own Confusion
When We Stand On Each Other We Block Out the Sun. This song will always have a
special place in my heart for as long as I live. When I was younger, my two best
friends and I used to go exploring the Italian countryside on foot. While roaming
about, we'd usually explore the old WWII ruins and abandoned houses that were
scattered among the fields. I can't listen to those opening lines without thinking
fondly of those days. That and just a few months ago I saw Fireworks live and I
climbed on stage, sang "Fuck this world I'll take mine" with Dave and then surfed
away into the crowd. It was pure Nirvana. | 4 | | Edguy Vain Glory Opera
Out of Control. I first encountered Out of Control when I was playing a shitty flash
game called Drakojan Skies when I was about 11. That song stuck in my head for
years and years before I finally bought it when I was 14 or so. Since then, Edguy
has become one of my all time favorite bands and I'm not ashamed to admit that I
have 125 of their songs. I still listen to Out of Control frequently and that dueling
solo is one of my favorite musical moments PERIOD. | 3 | | Darkest Hour Deliver Us
Demon(s). Though I initially hated Deliver Us when I first purchased it, it has come
to be one of my favorite melodeath albums. Deliver Us is easily the best Darkest
Hour album, highlighted by tasty riffs and gut-punching lyrics. Demon(s) was the
first song off of the album to really click with me. Kris Norris is a bad ass and for all
his sweep picking, Mike Carrigan will never live up to him. | 2 | | Wolfchant Bloody Tales of Disgraced Lands
Revenge. Wolfchant is one of those bands that is just consistently disappointing.
Nothing they released prior to Bloody Tales was very interesting and nothing they
released after it was even remotely good. That being said, for a brief period they
hit the folk metal nail right on the hand. With all kinds of jangly folk instrumentals,
blissfully cheesy samples and rollicking metal grooves, Bloody Tales is simply a
fantastic album from start to finish. Revenge is the best example of this, featuring
an impressive vocal performance, a sweet solo and the catchiest fucking chorus in
the history of metal. | 1 | | Wolves in the Throne Room Two Hunters
(Honorary mention): Behold the Vastness and Sorrow. Two Hunters was probably
either the first or second black metal record that I ever acquired. I was about
fourteen at the time and the entire concept of black metal completely foreign to
me. Wolves in the Throne Room was an excellent starting point for me, introducing
me to black metal without overwhelming me with satanic imagery and shit-tastic
synth breaks. Though I don't spin this album regularly anymore, I still find myself
going back to Behold if only for the gripping guitar outro. | |
