Adabelle
05.11.13 | Yeah i imagine that would be pretty useful at Bristol, from what i saw of it haha |
NapalmCrusader
05.11.13 | If you need short novels you should check some works of Mario De Andrare or you could begin with the most famous work of Paulo Coelho ( the alchemist) |
Havey
05.11.13 | get some brazilian music on the go |
InfamousGrouse
05.11.13 | does a 3.0 even qualify as a 'dig'?
cidade de deus is incredible, definitely worth your money. |
Adabelle
05.11.13 | Oh I have the Alchemist on a table somewhere.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure liledman was on a Brazilian music hype on rym recently.. |

05.11.13 | You can listen to some Jorge Ben Jor albums, especially one called "A tábua da esmeralda" and "Transa" by Caetano Veloso, they're good. They're more on a psychedelic way of Samba mixing rock influences on the go, and both are classics. Tom Zé is also good, he had recorded even a live concert with Tortoise as his stage band.
On movies: Lavoura arcaica is great and epic. One my favorite movies is also "linha de passe" by Walter Salles.
Books: Any by Machado de Assis is great to start, so as the epic novels and short stories by Guimarães Rosa. |
Havey
05.11.13 | Transa is an amazing album but most of it is in english, is it not? Haven't listened to it in a while |
oubli
05.11.13 | Yeah, it is half in english... Kind of a bricolage of other music, but is cool because you have a bunch of classic brazilian songs (as Dorival Caymmi) within lots of classic english songs rebuilted (as The Beatles). Its somewhat, much like the way brazillian modernism worked: take outside things and built it in a brazilian way |
anarchistfish
05.11.13 | where are you from exactly, oubli? |
Dreamflight
05.11.13 | Portugal speaking...
Books: Try some Eça de Queirós. he's my favourite writter from the realism era. Among his works: The
Sin of Father Amaro, The Maias and The City and the Mountains.
People also seem to enjoy Saramago's work (I don't), so you may want to check his books as well.
As for films for instance if you're into horror stuff you should check Coisa Ruím. I'm sure there's
lots of stuff I'm forgetting right now..

oubli
05.11.13 | São Paulo - Brazil, lol! |
Dreamflight
05.11.13 | I second that Caetano Veloso rec, lovely voice.. |
anarchistfish
05.11.13 | Ah. I've been wondering where I'd go if I were to go to Brazil. Manaus and Saldavor da Bahia look very interesting and the inner geographer in me creams over Curitiba's sustainable development plans. What is São Paulo like? Apart from being very large. |
anarchistfish
05.11.13 | Also thanks for the recs everyone |
oubli
05.11.13 | Well, I don't live in the city of São Paulo, but in the state of SP, but I'm two hours from there. Well, it's very variated for sure, there are museums, bars, famous streets as the Augusta, or Paulista Avenue. It's a nice place to go for sure. There are problems, certainly because it's actually very Large. The interior of the state, where I live has a cool vibe, minor streets but with lots of things to see. Maybe a tour through some of these cities would be cool.
I also recomend you to go to the south of the state of Minas Gerais, baroque architeture and very cool people, Bahia is awesome too.
And if you like ambient eletronic music, and wanna try some brazilian stuff, take a look on my project! http://floema.bandcamp.com/

05.11.13 | Tropa de elite
theres some old portuguese movies but they're not that funny anymore, this is the best way to learn PT, check out this show:

anarchistfish
05.11.13 | I heard Tropa de Elite was massive, though its reviews aren't amazing.
Damn those Portuguese accents |
Shuyin
05.11.13 | go for PT!
Brazilians use allot of English/American words in their vocabulary |
anarchistfish
05.11.13 | It's the US influence. Same with Latin American Spanish. Apparently the Spaniards don't like that.
Portuguese pronunciation is closer to French than Brazilian is but I've grown into using Brazilian pronunciation and I prefer it now. It's smoother. |
Shuyin
05.11.13 | ah they can sound hilarious sometimes, but as a portuguese i prefer the way we talk here
anyway, except a few words its pretty much the same language |
Shuyin
05.11.13 | oh yea, if you wanna try some poems check Fernando Pessoa |
NapalmCrusader
05.11.13 | If you like power metal you could check Angra, also os paralmas do succeso is very enjoyable |
anarchistfish
05.12.13 | I hate power metal :( |
Dolving999
05.12.13 | Dude, just watch the "Balas & Bolinhos" trilogy... in the end, you'll be speaking fluently portuguese slang, which is the best kind of portuguese. |
Chrisjon89
05.12.13 | for music...
Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges - Clube Da Esquina
Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina - Elis & Tom
Nara Leao - Dez Anos Depois
tip of the iceberg cos there is some phenomenal shit from the late 60s and early 70s out of that country. but for films and books I can't help you. |
Dreamflight
05.12.13 | "Dude, just watch the "Balas & Bolinhos" trilogy... in the end, you'll be speaking fluently portuguese slang, which is the best kind of portuguese."
ahahahahahahahahaha :D |
Pennywise_M
06.13.13 | Hehe, balas e bolinhos. Shit movies even though the third one has some pretty funny moments.
Portuguese music? Da Weasel. By far the best Hip Hop/Pop Rock band in Portugal, ever. Some hints of Nu Metal/Hardcore on their early stuff too.
I know this list is kinda old now but oh well. |
anarchistfish
06.13.13 | Still relevant. I'm really gonna dig into all this stuff once my long summer holidays kick in in a few days time. Thanks |
Pennywise_M
06.13.13 | Cheers! |
RuanCSC
06.14.13 | All the recommendations of Brazilian music above were good, but were mostly classic, old stuff. If you want to check out a new musician, Silva is surely the best. Also try Clarice Falcão. But mainly Silva. Seriously, the guy is just... wow. That is, if you're into electronic/pop music. |
Pennywise_M
06.14.13 | There's also Seu Jorge. He's pretty good. If you're looking for some soul/funk and Brazilian pop music |
RuanCSC
06.14.13 | Yeah, Seu Jorge is summery, laid-back funk/pop. Fun enough. For someone who's trying to learn Brazilian Portuguese, it's great to learn slangs. |
Shuyin
06.14.13 | 'Portuguese music? Da Weasel. By far the best Hip Hop/Pop Rock band in Portugal, ever'
Dealema
|
Pennywise_M
06.14.13 | Well yeah, but Dealema is just hip hop. I meant they're the best band that fuses hip hop with pop rock. Anyway, they are my favorite PT band ever. |
