Antiworld, The Birthday Party, and Cinema Strange in particular. |
Acanthus
06.23.11 | Thanks man, I've got a lot of compilation albums but not that many "pure" albums besides ones from Bauhaus. |
BallsToTheWall
06.23.11 | if goth rock isn't the most unpopular genre here I dont know what is, regardless I love it. |
ButcheredChildren
06.23.11 | One day I will get into goth rock, the closest thing I listen to is horror punk. |
Acanthus
06.23.11 | I started right in with the older artists, lead me to eventually get into Industrial and the like. I still like to throw on an album or two while I'm at home alone, blare that classic sound! |
ButcheredChildren
06.23.11 | Acanthus do you like Birmingham 6 at all? Found them a few days ago, I enjoy them. |

06.23.11 | Only listened to Bauhaus. They rule. |
Acanthus
06.23.11 | Balls that song actually is good, the remix they have on one of the Underworld Soundtracks rules!
@Butchered I've not yet heard them, will give them a looksee though. |

06.24.11 | Where's the Tiamat? |
Mewcopa0
06.24.11 | wheres teh Depeche Mode? |
Acanthus
06.24.11 | To me (ahem) Depeche Mode is not goth, too electronic. |
Vesper
06.24.11 | Not sure how much goth rock/darkwave you know, so if you haven't, you have to check out The Sisters of Mercy, old Killing Joke, old Fields of the Nephilim, Siouxsie and the Banshees (duh), and Alien Sex Fiend.
As for some that aren't always considered essential bands (unfortunately):
Trisomie 21 ("Last Song")
Weimar Gesang ("Like in a Mirror")
Ducks in Formation (these Australians only released this three-track, Darkness Falls, but it's excellent)
Angel of the Odd ("August 8th")
Skeletal Family (check out "Promised Land")
The Names ("Calcutta")
Funny that you put VNV Nation on a list for old school goth rock... talk about opposite ends of the goth music spectrum, haha. |
BallsToTheWall
06.24.11 | darkwave could fit into the conversation as well.
didnt aleady see that oops, i'ma real sucker for for the Renaissance-y and or classical new age stuff like Dark Sanctuary and All My Faith Lost. |
Acanthus
06.24.11 | Vesper I've heard of and have some of your first rec's stuff, it's wonderful too. I'm going to have to look into the rest of the stuff you rec'd though.
List is "somewhat related" so I went with it, they are similar to the EBM act I saw on Tuesday is all. Not meaning for this to be a pure goth rock list.

Vesper
06.24.11 | The classics are always good. :]
Although it isn't strictly goth rock, you should try out Peter Murphy's solo work - much more up-beat, but if you love Peter's voice as much as I do, it's good. Not to mention, he performs some Bauhaus songs at his solo shows.
Oh, also, if you like Siouxsie, check out Zola Jesus. She's like a modern lesbian baby of Siouxsie and Florence Welch.
Not that there's anything wrong with including EBM, haha, but I've met more trad goths that hate cybergoth shit than like it, so I was pleasantly surprised. |
BallsToTheWall
06.24.11 | Zola Jesus rules, good call, I was hoping to find more traditional gothic stuff like that but haven't. |
Acanthus
06.24.11 | Peter Murphy's solo work is insane, I love what little of it I have. I've listened to a bit of Zola Jesus before, need to revisit her though.
I like older goth, but sadly can't listen to it nonstop day after day like I can ebm and the like. |
Vesper
06.24.11 | Yeah, I recently stumbled upon a gothic/darkwave treasure trove in my religion professor at my alma mater, haha. I can ask her for more traditional stuff along the lines of Zola Jesus, if you like.
Peter Murphy live is insane. I can't believe he's 53 years old. He's held my hand twice - I was so proud, haha.
I know what you mean, though - I need to be in the right mood for gothic rock, as with a lot of genres, but it's easy enough to listen to electronic music every day for some reason. Easier to process, I guess, lol. |
Acanthus
06.24.11 | Yeah something along those lines at least. I just wanted an understanding on where the genre started before I really got into wearing the band tee's and such, got to know a genre's roots.
I've got to check out his latest album, surprised it wasn't reviewed on here actually. |
