Then, after you finish Light by them, check out Sins. It's so much heavier, but it's a good step into metal. From there, just go into whatever direction you'd like.

It's more accessible but its just not... start out with the ultra classics like Master of Puppets, Number of the Beast, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath etc. Then move on to Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer, Sodom, Exodus, Morbid Angel, and Death I guess. As far as more recent metal, Mastodon is some quality metal that's accessible as well.
