CutMan
07.21.10 | Make sure to describe the music, but never go into too much detail. You need to right mixture of how the music feels, and what literally happens within it- I enjoy that. And don't go track by track, but talk about a good number of them. Discuss the high lights, and if there's a weak track or two, or many, bring those up.
And, don't make it too long. But also don't make it too short. I know that doesn't look helpful, but, like so many things in life, ultimately, all this advice comes down to finding balance.
Also, carefully avoid using the same words or phrases over and over.
There you go? |

07.21.10 | I want to review Rodriguez - Coming from Reality |
Sowing
07.21.10 | -be true to your opinions of the album, don't cave to expectations. if you think jane doe is a 2, then give it a 2. just be sure to back up your opinions.
-talk about the music. nobody cares if the title track is your favorite of the whooole album and reminds you of your ex-girlfriend. describe how it sounds, focusing on the contributions of each instrument and the atmosphere it creates for the listener.
-have a strong intro and conclusion. a lot of the time that's all people will read.
-be objective. if you like a song for personal reasons but know it sucks ass, don't make up phony reasons for defending it.
-spell check. i can't tell you how many first reviews i've read that would have been okay had it not ben fore all the splling mistaks
-re-read your own damn review, and not just once. after you are finished, walk away and eat dinner or watch a movie or something. when you return, check to see how it flows. think to yourself, if i were some random person clicking on my review, would i want to read this? |
Sowing
07.21.10 | oh and don't do track by track. divide your review into strengths and weaknesses or common themes.
there you go, sowing's complete guide to writing a first review. |
