01.11.12 | Saw a list like this on some music site, it had Muse's "Feeling Good" as #1, thought that was a pretty decent pick. I like some of this list although I think the original is better than 5.
1 is good.
p.s. I hate any and all versions of "Sweet Dreams" so much. I really have an irrational hatred for that song. |

01.11.12 | Vader - Raining Blood, Death - Painkiller |
AsoTamaki
01.11.12 | Oh, you guys. Naturally, because he sounded like a broken old man, most of the lyrics would be fitting. That's really all there is to it. The performance isn't anything special. Get any 70 year old who can still sort of carry a tune to sing karaoke and it wouldn't be too far off. Cash's version is too clean. There's no dissonance like the NIN version had with the piano and that alone kills some of the emotional pull. It's cool that he got someone to direct such a fantastic video, but that's not what this is about. The music itself doesn't make it the best cover ever like it's often been labeled.
@Baseline: Indeed. That song is excellent.
@Spirit: See, that Raining Blood cover is one that's kind of cool, but I'd never have a reason to listen to. It sounds very similar to the original, just a little less intense.
@illmitch: Yeah, that one's pretty sweet too. The Cure has probably been covered the best out of any modern band. |
nowhereman1991
01.11.12 | All along the watchtower by Hendrix. |
iambandersnatch
01.11.12 | I mean, 9 is decent, but it's really one of their worst songs. I'm a big 311 fan and I don't even have it in my library. |
SitarHero
01.11.12 | I think that for a song to be a 'great' cover it can't just be the exact same song with the guitars louder and more distorted, but it needs to in some way convey the feeling of the song better than the original either through changing the mood or rewriting the music. That's why Metallica covering anything doesn't really count because it's...Metallica covering something. That's why Opeth's "Would?" or FNM's "Easy" shouldn't be on the list (despite the fact that I love the songs) because they're absolutely faithful to the originals, Patton's "Ewwwww!" aside.
As people have already mentioned, Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" and Cash's "Hurt" are probably the best covers ever.
Hendrix makes the song completely his own, his soloing is IMO the best of his career, and he perfectly accentuates Dylan's lyrics with his music in a way that Dylan could only dream of.
Cash strips "Hurt" down to its emotional core, turning what was a haunting song into one that's absolutely devastating. Even Trent Reznor agrees. |

01.11.12 | Where's Alien Ant Farm - Thriller, best cover ever. |

01.11.12 | 9 is fucking horrible
black betty by spiderbait is an amazing cover |
AsoTamaki
01.11.12 | You are thinking of Smooth Criminal and nope. It was good, but no.
Absolutely agreed about All Along the Watchtower. Thing is, no one even thinks of it as anything other than Hendrix's song now. On this list, I focused on songs that had been big hits or at least well-known for years prior to the cover version.
Re: Opeth and FNM: Those are examples of bands sticking close very to the original, but still adding their own identifiable touch.
Wow, so many haters of 9. Where were you guys back in 2004 to stop it from becoming such a success? |

01.11.12 | @AsoTamaki:
Don't get me wrong, I love both the original and cover versions of both "Would?" and "Easy", but I think the covers are close enough to the original to make them kind of superfluous. Might as well listen to the originals.
Also, Stanley Jordan's instrumental version of "Eleanor Rigby". Brilliant. |
Ire
01.11.12 | also 9 is lol |
AsoTamaki
01.11.12 | Nah, there are enough differences in instrumentation, new additions (guitar solos, etc.) and there's also a unique vibe due to how different the vocals sound. Compare those two to Vader's "Raining Blood" that someone mentioned earlier.
Sunn O))) is trash. |
