03.17.12 | Some of your influences are pretty rad dude. I'd like to hear what comes from it. Maybe some In Rainbows sounding type stuff, haha. It's a great fucking album. |

03.17.12 | I meant to put The Smashing Pumpkins, too. And yeah the reason I made this list was because I couldn't come up with anything cool, so I didn't want to force anything. Usually guitar parts and lyrics will pop into my head while I'm in the shower, then I'll get out and write them down or figure them out. |
KotoFtw
03.17.12 | It seems like the majority of the advise here is do drugs and make metalcore. I played drums in a
genericore band for like 3 years, haha.
Edit: I spelled advice the British way. Weird. |
AsoTamaki
03.17.12 | Well, if you do certain drugs and try making metalcore, it might turn into prog. You never know. |

03.17.12 | You've got some good stuff here, it's good to see you mentioned the Smashing Pumpkins.
I've found it's better to become extremely tight as a band before you start trying to write music, a great way to do this is learn covers from your influences. It works dude.

03.17.12 | I think the other guitarist and I are gonna split vocal duties, at least that's the plan for now. Thanks for all the encouraging words, everyone. And yeah I don't know what I was thinking with the British thing... |
Trebor.
03.17.12 | Writing lyrics is hard because it makes me feel gay and I don't want anybody to see them |
twlight
03.17.12 | lots of cool influences here.
smoking weed really helps me write interesting and experimental sounding guitar riffs. But tapping into other emotions and truly enjoying playing instruments will make song-writing more natural. |
twlight
03.17.12 | Also, i've found that if you create a song as an instrumental first and then add lyrics afterwards, it
usually makes for a more interesting song from a musical standpoint because when you initially wrote
the song you were not relying on vocal lines or lyrics to make the song interesting, but rather cool
rhythms and and catchy riffs.
If want your band to be more focused around lyrical content and vocals then collaborating with the
vocalist is essential. Usually the instrument players in the band will need to read and understand the
vocals first in order to craft a sound and style that matches the feeling the lyrics are conveying. |
Trebor.
03.17.12 | Yeah I do vocals and lyrics when the music is finished |
KotoFtw
03.18.12 | For now I kind of just write a couple lines down and mess around with them, while also writing songs independently from that. Then I fit the lyrics over the guitar. |
Fossegrim
03.18.12 | Buy a music comp book. Write like crazy and sacrifice sleep, if you really want to take this a step further. Think of all the silly lyrics that exist. Think of the vocalists performing those lyrics in front of hundreds of people. But above all take writing slow, don't rush and you're bound to reach a point of success. |
taxidermist
03.18.12 | I think I might start writing lyrics for the hell of it, lol. Prob gonna suck ass at it. |
Shuyin
03.18.12 | trying to get a band going as well, but my guitar guy likes mostly metalcore and im a death metal dude.
deathcore would be outta the question so i asked him if we could writte some dark ambient metalcore with some doom influences, we're definitelly gonna need keyboards as well, so far so good.
most of our lyrics (written by me) are about religion or religious beliefs, my bro is handling the riffs, he goes from melodic to agressive tones and he can writte some sick stuff but right now he doesnt progress well, makes it too repetitive, we need more details on our notes when progressing the sound, etc.. hard stuff |
PuddlesPuddles
03.18.12 | If you do find a bassist who can sing, then you don't want him |
ChuckyTruant
03.18.12 | its all tricky Shuyin. I'm at the same place as your bro on guitar |
Shuyin
03.18.12 | i believe, but he's an extremely talented musician, you should see him throw some solos. while i doubt he can be considered as a damn good guitar player, if he works hard and keeps practicing im preety sure he will.
besides the guy is fucking crazy |

No I'm not an atheist you ignorant fuck, I'm highly spiritual and open minded - you're obviously a Catholic extremist, judging by the self-righteous, overly assertive sense of arrogance you possess. By the way, scum is singular, you fuck |

TheseModernThings
03.18.12 | hey what a coincidence, my friend and i have been writing music as well the past few weeks and the music i brought to the table reminded him of Mineral, and he recently wrote a Mewithoutyou/Manchester Orchestra influenced song. We're taking a more pop-punk approach since in our opinion it's easier, in terms of overall songwriting, and hoping to get a 4-5 track EP by the summer. I'd love to hear what you get out of it.
Also, I'd advise against doing drugs in order to write. It might sound like the greatest shit you've written but when you read it when it wears off it doesn't sound that great. You should study lyrics from bands and learn their writing process. |
KotoFtw
03.18.12 | @TheseModernThings I didn't plan on doing any drugs, not my thing really, haha. Your project sounds interesting as well. |
