First you listen to Utada Hikaru's Deep River because it's dope as fuck and the easiest on the western ear out of all the things I'll recommend you. You dig that? Well you better do because it's fucking amazing. Now you get Shiina Ringo's Karuki Zamen Kuri No Hana. You listen to it and obviously 5 it. Now, was that easy listening for you? Go for one of Kyary's albums. Was it too much for you? Listen to more Shiina Ringo until you're ready. Somewhere in between? Try Etsuko Yakushimaru's Radio Onsen Eutopia.
If Kyary still is easy listening to you then you can go to the highest level of j-pop craziness which would be Momoiro Clover Z's The 5th Dimension.
If you listened to all of that you pretty much have listened to the most relevant 2000/10s mainstream pop albums. Avoid anything by Perfume, Capsule... basically anything that I didn't mention. It's all terrible.
J-Rock is basically impossible to flowchart because there is just way too much stuff. A couple great entry level bands are Number Girl (post-hardcoreish indie rock, very influential), Ling Tosite Sigure (god tier post-hc/indie), 9mm Parabellum Bullet (same vein as Ling Tosite Sigure, only their first album gets my sign of approval), mass of the fermenting dregs, asobi seksu, tokyo shoegazer, that mikgazer compilation (shoegaze), midori (obnoxious/abrasive jazzy rock), toe, té, world's end girlfriend, yodaka, mono (post-/math-rock), mouse on the keys, jizue (rocky jazz, jazzy rock), ...
barely scratching the surface with that but you can go on from there on your own.
