09.04.13 | Obviously I realize Envy doesn't fit in this at all, but it's the most relevant band I listen to and you have to have 2 things. |

09.04.13 | You gotta listen to The Pillows. Any of the six albums between 'Please Mr. Lostman' and 'Thank You,
My Twilight' will work. If it helps, their biggest influences are The Pixies. |

09.05.13 | I second Dir en Grey and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Toe is awesome, seeing them in concert October second and I'm pumped. :) Also, try Cornelius for awesome Jrock production, Shiina Ringo (incredibly awesome in every way, Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana is a must have), An Cafe is fun oshare kei dance rock, and Tujiko Noriko for some pretty weird, glitchy avant-pop. |

09.05.13 | ok let me flowchart you this shit in textform man
First you listen to Utada Hikaru's Deep River because it's dope as fuck and the easiest on the western ear out of all the things I'll recommend you. You dig that? Well you better do because it's fucking amazing. Now you get Shiina Ringo's Karuki Zamen Kuri No Hana. You listen to it and obviously 5 it. Now, was that easy listening for you? Go for one of Kyary's albums. Was it too much for you? Listen to more Shiina Ringo until you're ready. Somewhere in between? Try Etsuko Yakushimaru's Radio Onsen Eutopia.
If Kyary still is easy listening to you then you can go to the highest level of j-pop craziness which would be Momoiro Clover Z's The 5th Dimension.
If you listened to all of that you pretty much have listened to the most relevant 2000/10s mainstream pop albums. Avoid anything by Perfume, Capsule... basically anything that I didn't mention. It's all terrible.
J-Rock is basically impossible to flowchart because there is just way too much stuff. A couple great entry level bands are Number Girl (post-hardcoreish indie rock, very influential), Ling Tosite Sigure (god tier post-hc/indie), 9mm Parabellum Bullet (same vein as Ling Tosite Sigure, only their first album gets my sign of approval), mass of the fermenting dregs, asobi seksu, tokyo shoegazer, that mikgazer compilation (shoegaze), midori (obnoxious/abrasive jazzy rock), toe, té, world's end girlfriend, yodaka, mono (post-/math-rock), mouse on the keys, jizue (rocky jazz, jazzy rock), ...
barely scratching the surface with that but you can go on from there on your own.
and don't listen to dir en grey. |
