Slashs October 2016

I...I did listen to a lot more music this month than usual. Hm.
1Mick Jenkins
Pursuit Of HappyNess: The Story Of MickalasCage

Chicago-Hop// So, this was definitely a step in the right direction for Mick. It's less cringy, the audio quality is less sketchy, the concepts begin to be more fleshed out, but i don't know. There is just something missing here. Mostly, it's beats and self-awareness. //3,5/5
4 Fingaz

Bullshit// Sometimes I'm curious and listen to the very first project a musician puts out. This time, it was a mistake. I mean, everybody has to start somewhere, I guess, but did it need to be HERE? If it wasn't for some serviceable flows, this would be hands down one of the worst mixtapes I ever listened to in my entire life. //1,5/5
3Various Artists (Metal)
Grind Madness at the BBC

Grindcore// Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic compilation, but the main reason why grindcore-albums work for me is, because they are so short. This is over 3 hours long. See my problem? Still, this is a good introduction to grindcore for people who are curious about the genre. //3,5/5
4Lil Uzi Vert
Purple Thoughtz Vol.1

Trap// Another case of terrible first project. His flows are okay, he says "YUHH" way less, but it's also wayyyyy more misogynistic and way less charming. Good early Charlie Heat beats, though. //2/5
5Lil Uzi Vert
The Perfect Luv Tape

Bubblegum-Trap// Yeaaaaah, this was trashed a lot, and I completely get why. This still has some legitimate bangers (Money Mitch) and some charming vocal performances. It really isn't great, though. //3/5
6Various Artists
Choro 1906-1947

Marchinha, Choros// Beautiful, touching and uplifting music from the early days of music recording in Brazil. Do yourself a favor and check this out now, because this is such a colorful, lively and relaxing compilation. You'll be hard-pressed not to smile at least a little bit. //4,5/5

Sadboi-Times// A definite step up from LaH, with way more skill at display, better production, better lyrics and better themes. This dude beats most sad-times-rappers with eaaaaaaaase. //4/5
Dorm Session

Sad-Rap// It's too short. It's just too short. //3,5/5
Telerand EP

German-Rap// A talented rapper from my hometown, but he still needs to find his voice and flow. Has some very charming ideas and lyrics, and from now on, i will also ask anyone "What's growing?" instead of "What's up?" //3/5
10Various Artists
Shona Mbira Music

Shona Mbira// Very soothing music from Zimbabwe, mostly made up of cyclical patterns in rhythm and harmony and almost virtuosic singing on top of it. The second you understand the rhythms they are going for, this turns into a magical experience. //4/5
11Vince Staples
Hell Can Wait

Slap// Way too late to the partyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. //4/5
12P.M. Dawn
Jesus Wept

Transcendence// A very heavenly, very philosophical, very existentialist and very melodic project by one of the most legendary rap-duos to ever exist. If you can get past the fact that there is just one song on here, on which Prince Be actually raps, you will have a grand time with this. //4,5/5
Night Life

New-Jersey-Hop// Super fun and hard-hitting release by a very underrated group from Newark. They do bite Busta Rhymes a little here and there, but this is still original enough and has little duds. Also, the Rah Digga verse on here is perfection. //3,5/5
14Junior Senior
D-D-Don't Stop the Beat

Dance-Punk// If you ignore the fact that most of the songs on here are basically only half-finished, this is one hell of a ride. The is almost The Hives meet Nu-Disco, and it's absolutely glorious. "I'M A MAN, MAN, I DON'T NEED NO CHICKS." "AND I'M A MAN, MAN, I DON'T NEED NO *Whistle Sound*" //3,5/5
15Danny Brown
Atrocity Exhibition

Experimental-Hip-Hop// This shit is wild, man. //4,5/5
Bis das Leben applaudiert

German-Rap// Best german rap album of the year, hands down. The lyricism on this alone is a solid 4/5 and the features and beats just help push this album further to it's limits. ASK is one of the most personal and thought-provoking rappers active in Germany, and he even comes from my hometown. I respect this dude so much. //4,5/5
17Cashmere Cat
Mirror Maru

Instrumental-Electronica/Hip-Hop// Super fun and super short collection of inventive and imaginative beats. No fat to be trimmed, no enjoyment to be lost. //4/5
18Cashmere Cat
Wedding Bells

Wedding-Beats// It's the same as before, but not as cohesive and not as good. //3,5/5
19Ty Dolla Sign
Hou$e On The Hill

R'n'STOP// This could be one of the least promising starts to a decently talented singers career I ever witnessed. Nothing on here is catchy, clever, emotive or atmospheric, instead opting to go for every R'n'B-cliche that was ubiquitous at that time. //1,5/5
20Ty Dolla Sign

R'n'SLAP// This is way better. He still has a consistent dud-record, but the good songs are SO. GOOD. Special shout outs to the Charlie Heat remix of the title-track, that shit is stupid fire. Also, there is some weird political shit going on in the backgound? //3,5/5
Link Up & Suede

Sample'n'B// This is a solid EP by the duo, but not really anything special. Did make me interested in their album, though. //3/5
Yes Lawd!

R'n'Sample// Yeah, this is fire. I've seen people calling it the "Madvillainy" of R'n'B, but that's bullshit. It is, however, a well-samples, well-structured, well-performed and well-written effort by a very interesting duo. Anderson .Paak is the man of the year for me. //4/5
Aus dem Jahre Schnee

Austrian-Rap// So, the beats are nice and the concepts are good, but the raps is kinda bland and lifeless. very nice to see this kind of rap coming out of Austria, though. //3/5
24Gucci Mane

WIZZOP// This is icy beyond believe, but I still like Everybody Looking a fair bit more, though. Money Machine is the JAM though. Bling Blaww Burr is heaps of fun, too. Also, Love Her Body is a surprisingly reflective song, which you would never guess from the title. //3/5
25Mick Jenkins
The Healing Component

Love-Rap// This wore off me quite a bit, but there are a lot of great themes and beats to sink your teeth into. Just remember to ~~~~LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~~~~ Strange Love is the song of the year. Yeh, I got another one. //4/5
26Bon Iver
22, A Million

Wankery// The literal definition of "Pretentious". Also, the audio quality is horrendous. This isn't the worst thing ever, but I never wanna listen to this ever again. //2/5
