Victoria: If you want dubstep recs look here, and stay away from Skrillex as he's a poor representation of the genre

03.31.11 | I'm just saying if someone wants to get into dubstep you don't say Skrillex you say "here, listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vYt9t3rKzg"
And then several months down the road when you've been educated then you say "hey, check out Skrillex. He's fun in a let loose in a candy store kinda way" |

03.31.11 | Deviant. knows more about dubstep and most electronica than anyone on this webbsite, if you're gonna take rec's take
his. most of the dubstep i listen to i got from him |
TMobotron
03.31.11 | i get what you mean. And i can see it your way too. But skrillex has been helpful for me in getting people to cross over into dubstep when they only listened to house/trance and the like. I agree 100% its not the ideal representation of the genre but i think its easier for people to like on initial listen than a lot of dubstep is.
But idk the only people ive gotten into dubstep are my irl friends and they like really shitty stuff usually so when i try to get them into something i have to kind of ease them into it. like if i played them the breakage track you linkes they would just be like "wtf is that" and just disregard my opinion. My friends suck at music btw and i hate it. |
defjaw83
03.31.11 | same tbh |
Deviant.
03.31.11 | I see what you're saying TM and it's not like Skrillex myself I just loathe bringing him into a discussion regarding recs for someone looking to get into the genre. But in saying that, Burial is on this list so Victoria obviously has some idea what to expect |
TMobotron
03.31.11 | i wasnt sure if she had that because she liked it or just to represent that she wanted to get into dubstep. But yeah if she already likes that she can get into some better stuff.
i can empathize with you though because i dont really like that a lot of people only know one side of dubstep, or how many people ride skrillex's dick (not on this site thankfully). i have this annoying ass co-worker who thinks of himself as the dubstep king. He asked me what genre burial was once and i told him dubstep and he said "uhh, dubstep usually has wobble bass..." like i was a dumbshit for thinking that. he keeps asking me if ive heard skrillex and i keep telling him no (i enjoy skrillex). I hate him for other reasons too so i was predisposed to hating anything he said but i wouldve either way. |
Deviant.
03.31.11 | That's my main problem with people who think they know dubstep. You play things like Clubroot, Burial and what have you and all they say is "oh, that's trip hop". I even asked a local dj if he had ever heard of EL-B (one of the pioneers of dubstep) and he just looked at me blankly (he was playing dubstep btw) |
TMobotron
03.31.11 | haha yeah. i generally like that stuff more than what artists like bar9 are doing too, though that stuffs good sometimes too (i like bar9). i cant get enough of that reso mix i got from you though, thats incredible. I can tolerate ignorance to some extent, its when ignorant people act like theyre right and im wrong that i really cant stand. anyways im off to bed, peace. may or may not remember to check this thread tomorrow. |
Deviant.
03.31.11 | I have plenty of time for more "wubstep" stuff, even outside of the clubs because there's still a lot of great stuff to be found in the more bass heavy side of things (bar 9 being one of them). My only problem with that style is that it becomes a little monotonous, and it gets hard to distinguish. It all works in context though, like that Numbernin6 song on the Reso mix is insane live; I can dig just about any dubstep in a live environment. Except Mt Eden, fuck that guy.
In other news I came home tonight and found my girl lying on the bed with her feet up and some headphones on listening to Street Halo. Bless her cotton socks |
wabbit
03.31.11 | Anyone I know irl (with the exception of my two friends who like good music) who listens to dubstep only listens to it for "the drops"
Also when the fuck did "filthy" become a good word? |

03.31.11 | Came to rec 3. Great album and criminally overlooked here for whatever reason, even after the Radiohead hype died down.
The only other 2011 album I've got is Lykke Li's 'Wounded Rhymes', which is not too bad. This isn't really a rec though and I'm just talking to myself at this point. |

Skream
Flux Pavillion
Benga
Rusko
James Blake
Subvert

Foolishly, I am a little biased towards English artist. But I guess overall it's whether you like dubstep for the drops, the womp or the atmosphere. |

I hear Lykke Li's new record is killer but haven't listened yet.
The Weekend & Frank Ocean's LPs are worth checking out if you like r&b/groovy pop.

yeah same here. thats why i love what ive got from reso so much. i like bar 9 but listening to his discog is pretty difficult because its just back and forth between a normal section and then a fat drop and then the same normal section same drop etc. Some variation here and there of course but not enough. Midnight is my jam though. |

04.08.11 | 2011 dubstep to check out:

Objekt - The Goose That got Away / Tinderbox

Pangaea - Pangaea EP
Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo / Wet Look ( this artists has recently moved to more housey tunes, but hes top notch)
Sepalcure - Love Pressure EP (one of my favorites)
Hyetal - Like Silver / Phoenix (this guys synths are awesome)

04.08.11 | yup Fever is very good. Basically everything that's coming out on Hessle Audio (new compilation is gunna be so good), Punch Drunk, Swamp81, Night Slugs, Numbers, Black Box, 3024, Apple Pips, Skull Disco (RIP!), NonPlus+, Hemlock, Hotflush, Tectonic, and Tempa labels are essential for me.
Given that a few of these labels dip into other genres besides dubstep, or release stuff that are on the outside fringes of the genre.. Imo they are some of the best labels in the dubstep realm at the moment. |

Yes, if you were under the impression that throwing words like "dubtechno" around on a site like Sputnik would be useful, then sure......
Of course you can voice your opinion, as long as it doesn't involve making up irrelevant genre descriptors because you're too short-sighted, seeing as how you really only undermine the genre by doing that |
TMobotron
04.08.11 | yeah dude i dont hate you or anything but you're ruining the good tron name right now |

04.08.11 | I don't see how it is undermining anything. It's just a fusion of DUB music and Techno (I made an error in saying dubstep/techno = dubtechno). I don't know how you can write off such a genre name, i've heard more ridiculous ones, "post-dubstep" hahaha. Not like dubtechno is in any sense new. http://www.discogs.com/explore?style=Dub+Techno surely 182 pages of such crowned releases is quite the blogger's tag.... |
