SgtPepper
05.22.12 | Piccadilly Circus, you dont know london if you havent been there, mate.
Also England is my home, but out all the other countries in Europe, its a fucking shithole with not much to see. |
KILL
05.22.12 | nope it sucks |
Eko
05.22.12 | we wanted to do Paris or Rome too but it was gonna cost way too much
also good restaurant recs would be appreciated cuz I hear they're hard to come by |
sifFlammable
05.22.12 | not much to see
great place to get drunk and banter at football games but the seasons over
especially not much to do in summer |
SgtPepper
05.22.12 | The thing about England is that it lacks a certain rich and appealing culture that is present in countries like Italy, Greece and Spain. And it doesnt have fun places to go like Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
But as far as food, England does not have good food or large variety. but like I said go to Piccadilly Circus, thats were all the stores, restaurants, and nightlife is.
|
sifFlammable
05.22.12 | seriously the thought of opting for london instead of say barcelona or florence is a clanger |

05.22.12 | CLIMBIN' UP ON SOLSBURY HILL! |
SlightlyEpic
05.22.12 | I live in London but I don't really know about touristy things to do here. Shows on the other hand, I'm not sure what you're into but Japandroids are playing here the 29th, Extra Life on the 30th, Cursive on the 2nd, Mazzy Star on the 3rd and Unsane on the 4th. |
Ballz3D
05.22.12 | I COULD SEE THE CITY LIGHT! |
DurzoBlint
05.22.12 | Could be some decent shows on, but as for stuff to see... unless you plan on going to some clubs or
bars, there is really not much to do. London is a shit hole for visiting for any other reason than
socialising / drinking / sporting events. |
Eko
05.22.12 | Oh sweet I might try and catch that Japandroids show maybe |
Eko
05.22.12 | we may go up into the countryside some too |
Adabelle
05.22.12 | You could go to the Epsom Derby haha, see all the gypsiesss. Or wander around London, there's some cool places, go to SouthBank and there'll probably be something going on. Or go to Camden. Or go to see Slightly. Or maybe do all the tourist-y stuff like London Dungeons, Windsor Castle, etc etc. Also the 2/3/4/5 is the celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee so there should be loads of stuff going on. I know that there's like a thousand boats going up the Thames on one of the days so London is gonna be crazy busy that day hahaha |
BarkHammer
05.22.12 | @Paperback; it has a culture it's just been buried under a shit ton of hatred and Impiricism. |
Adabelle
05.22.12 | I would also recommend getting fish and chips and eating them sitting on the beach, even if it is raining. |
Eko
05.22.12 | Forgive me, what is the Queen's Jubilee? |
MO
05.22.12 | Hyde Park |
Strider
05.22.12 | Go to Oxford, and Bath if you can, awesome places. London Dungeon is pretty fun if you have nothing else to do. |
anarchistfish
05.22.12 | London's pretty cool to just wander about. You can see quite a lot just accidentally even though it's a pretty big city (2nd in Europe bitch) |
MO
05.22.12 | ^ yea behind moscow which is a monster |
Strider
05.22.12 | Too bad you won't be able to see the Noting Hill Carnival though, that's something you have to do in
your life |
Adabelle
05.22.12 | The Queen has been on the throne 60 years so everyone is celebrating wooooooo |
thumbcrusher
05.22.12 | come to watership down, that's the only place of any fame near me. there's sheep, cows and some grassy hills to walk over. oh and andrew lloyd webber's abode. |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.22.12 | London has got a few tourist spots that you can probs see in like a day, but there may be some decent gigs (google it). I live in Edinburgh, which is much more of a touristy place |
omnipanzer
05.22.12 | How old are you Eko? |
StrangerofSorts
05.22.12 | "Go to Oxford, and Bath if you can, awesome places."
Yeh I'll buy this. Can't comment too much on Bath (though going to uni there next year if my grades are up to scratch), but Oxford's one of the best places in the country to just lie around doing bugger-all. Trains straight from London on a very regular basis, too. If you decide to go, look up a place called Turf Tavern.
Hardly ever go to London, so can't help you too much on that one. To me it's like every other fucking massive city but with some photo opportunities for Japanese tourists spotted around the place. |
anarchistfish
05.22.12 | damn scots |
TheJackal
05.22.12 | As far as music goes, Camden Town is the place to go
Loads of cool small venues and just a cool place to visit.
Camden market is pretty cool as well, and the whole area is sort of a hotspot for the alternative culture in London.
Careful at night though as its a pretty dodgy/rough area if you're not careful and wandering around alone etc. |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.22.12 | Lol Fish, I've only lived there for a few years (spent the rest of my life in England) and I'm not
buying the independence bullshit |
anarchistfish
05.22.12 | Camden's cool just don't buy anything there expecting it to work any longer than a few hours
and watch your pocket |
Sanders
05.22.12 | "I would also recommend getting fish and chips and eating them sitting on the beach, even if it is raining."
ESPECIALLY if it's raining |
Eko
05.23.12 | wow this blew up. I'll make note of these things and such.
@omni 17 so no clubs or things of the sort |
ffs
05.23.12 | why |
Eko
05.23.12 | also are there any cool art museums cuz I dig art museums |
phishing
05.23.12 | 'and I'm not buying the independence bullshit'
barely any scots actually support the referendum though? at least, everyone i know, myself included, is against it |
StrangerofSorts
05.23.12 | "also are there any cool art museums cuz I dig art museums"
Go to the Tate Modern if you want all the weird modern crap. London's got all the old stuff in spades, as well. I'm sure there's some tourist site somewhere that lists them.
A law you might like: it's legal to have half a pint of beer with a meal if you're 16+. If you're with your parents then you can definitely get away with a whole one - I don't know of anywhere that will actually ask for ID when your parents are there. |
anarchistfish
05.23.12 | Most people think the Tate Modern is a joke but I think it's free to get in, so...
haha, France never ask for ID ever
love France
actually I think that's the case for most European countries, except the UK. That's where the US influence comes in |
Eko
05.23.12 | Huh interesting I thought it was looser over there but I didn't know how loose. Drinking laws are pretty intense over here. I was at a concert last weekend where two kids got arrested for underage drinking.
Yeah cool I dig the modern stuff a lot. |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.23.12 | "barely any scots actually support the referendum though? at least, everyone i know, myself included, is against it" Yeah, I can't think of anybody I know that supports it |
anarchistfish
05.23.12 | Yeah the impression we get here is that the scots act all nationalistic and keep bashing the english but when given the option to gain independence they realise it would fuck them up and they crumple.
Unless it's only a vocal minority that act like the former but it gets pretty annoying |
Vesper
05.23.12 | 'also are there any cool art museums cuz I dig art museums'
The V&A is where it's at. Not so much modern stuff as the Tate, but it's a stellar museum.
You can also go to galleries like Saatchi or White Cube, if you're looking for more contemporary work.
I don't know why people are saying there's nothing to do in London. There's plenty, but, like any other place, it just takes time to find what you enjoy.
I'd be able to help you better if you were into gothic/deathrock culture, since that was pretty much my whole schtick while I was in London, but that's probably not your thing, haha.
Camden's cool, though, even if you don't buy anything, just to sift through all the weird clothing shops.
Portobello Market is worth a look too, if you're into things like really old books and vintage boxing gloves. |
Tyrael
05.23.12 | I'm jealous |
Eko
05.23.12 | cool. yeah I probably should have planned all this before now but oh well haha.
this might be a stupid question, but will british wifi work with my american macbook and iphone? |
Sirob
05.23.12 | lol you cant go to london for 10 days in a week is impossible |
StrangerofSorts
05.23.12 | Yeh underage drinking in the UK is mostly a case of knowing the shops desperate enough to sell you stuff. Otherwise fake IDs work a charm; they just want to be able to say that it isn't "their fault". Everyone does it though, we're a drinking culture. Must be similar in the US.
As far as the Scot thing goes. I reckon I'd want independence if I was living there. The UK has really been held back by its politics (as well as the heavy influence of US media + politics). I mean look at Scandinavia: the UK won't reach the standard of living in those countries for centuries due to an uneducated population and petty politicians. I would hope, if I were Scottish, to speed that up by removing the brutish, subservient tumour that is the rest of the UK. As it is I'm stuck being English. |
StrangerofSorts
05.23.12 | "this might be a stupid question, but will british wifi work with my american macbook and iphone?"
It is a stupid question. Do grab some adaptors (and possibly transformers if they aren't included) for chargers etc. |
Eko
05.23.12 | meant leaving in a week derp |
Eko
05.23.12 | yeah I did get some adapters
the US media has been so obsessed with the royal family since the wedding, went from like zero caring to paparazzi |
Sirob
05.23.12 | lol i figured |
anarchistfish
05.23.12 | "this might be a stupid question, but will british wifi work with my american macbook and iphone?"
oh come on our cultures aren't /that/ far removed |
anarchistfish
05.23.12 | "the US media has been so obsessed with the royal family since the wedding, went from like zero caring
to paparazzi"
that's funny cos most people I know don't give a shit about the royals |
Eko
05.23.12 | well I wanted to make sure cuz that would have been a super downer if it didn't work
theyre more like celebrities, the american media follows kate around. and a TON of people watched the wedding even though it was on at like 3:30 AM here. |
anarchistfish
05.23.12 | lmao
I know we have a reputation of being obsessed with royalty but most people are indifferent |
