Sethdavid's Top 20 Of 2012 |
20 | | Freelance Whales Diluvia
Way less immediate than the first album, but definitely a good listen. |
19 | | Sleigh Bells Reign Of Terror
Not bad, but it can't hold a candle to Treats. |
18 | | Crystal Castles (III)
I often feel conflicted by this band. Half their tracks are awesome, half kind of
make me want to punch myself in the face. They can be a bit grating. |
17 | | The xx Coexist
Honestly, this album was a little bit disappointing. Again, not a bad album but their
debut had a bit more going for it. |
16 | | Susanne Sundfor The Silicone Veil
The first of this years ?discoveries? for me, this album is pretty boss, the sounds
that she uses are awesome and her voice is very unique. If you haven?t listened to
her, check out ?White Foxes? and ?Among Us?. |
15 | | Lana Del Rey Born to Die
People love to hate Lana Del Rey and this album or whatever, but I think it's catchy
and well done. |
14 | | Holy Other Held
Sounds like a mix between SBTRKT and How To Dress Well. I dig. |
13 | | Best Coast The Only Place
Simple. Good. |
12 | | Bloc Party Four
I found this album to be pleasantly surprising. I was on the fence when they
released Octopus, but songs like Kettling and Real Talk really make this CD. |
11 | | Marilyn Manson Born Villain
When I first heard this album I was like "MANSON MAKES A COMEBACK", then I
listened to his earlier music again and was like, "Well, not quite, but its still pretty
good" |
10 | | Gypsy & The Cat The Late Blue
"Do you know that youre going to be just fine today" ||
A nice progression from their first CD, still catchy, but added much needed variation
within the songs. |
9 | | Menomena Moms
"Now Im evolving from a child to an aging child" ||
Even with one band member leaving Menomena still makes music that is
simultaneously complex and catchy |
8 | | Two Door Cinema Club Beacon
"The devil will want you back" ||
Not quite as immediate as "Tourist History", thats not necessarily a bad thing
though |
7 | | Japandroids Celebration Rock
"Remember the night you were already in bed, said 'fuck it', got up to drink with me
instead" ||
There is something oddly romantic about this album, and Continuous Thunder may
be my favorite love song of the year |
6 | | mewithoutYou Ten Stories
"I dont know if I know, though some with certainty insist no certainty exists" ||
I personally loved Its All Crazy... but it is nice to see a bit of energy infused back
into mewithoutYou. This CD met my expectations pretty precisely, its damn good
because so is everything mewithoutYou has done. When a band gets to this point
in their career and theyve always put out quality music its hard to imagine that
they?ll stray from that. |
5 | | How To Dress Well Total Loss
"Waiting for the day when you could say safely 'I have my place, I have my home, I
have my future" ||
This album is just as good as, if not better than, Love Remains. Solid. |
4 | | Amanda Palmer Theatre Is Evil
"I would have told you if you'd only asked me" ||
I was rather surprised by my love for this album as Ive never really gotten into
Amanda Palmer before, but this has made me start listening to her past work and I
must say Im definitely a fan. This album has a lot going for it, its infectious
(Melody Dean) and emotional (The Bed Song). Im also a huge fan of the
production for this album, John Congleton you ARE the man. |
3 | | Graph Rabbit Snowblind
"I stand where I lie, my shoes untied, my name has changed and it sounds so
strange" ||
HELLO, YOU, READER, CHECK OUT THIS ALBUM! Graph Rabbit is by far my favorite
music discovery of the year. This is one of those albums that when Im listening to
it I dont really want to do anything else, I just want to imagine myself in the
snowy dream filled landscape that Graph Rabbit so effortlessly conjures. Seriously
check this album out, I want this band to get well known for two reasons: 1) They
are good and they deserve it, 2) I really want this album to get pressed on vinyl.
For fans of: Radiohead, Bon Iver, Nick Drake. |
2 | | Cursive I Am Gemini
"All of our sins are rising again, like skeletons" ||
I'm in love with this album. Cursive's seventh full length and they still manage to
reinvent their sound. Its a lot of fun. And Tim Kasher tries to trick the listener into
thinking that he actually wrote an album that isnt about himself but IMHO, it so
totally is. |
1 | | Fiona Apple The Idler Wheel...
"Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key" ||
This album is flawless and Fiona Apple is a magnificent human being. I have nothing
left to say. |
