| My Top Five Movies
These are my top five favorite movies. It is difficult to rank any of these five above or below any of the others since they are all so great in my eyes. List is current digs. | 1 | | Protest the Hero Scurrilous
Inception-Not only did this movie keep me on my toes the entire way through (a feeling that remains the same every time I watch it), but it honestly changed my life. As a result of repeated views, my entire view of what love is and the nature of love have changed immensely. Also, I now have a new appreciation of life and the time we are given, as well as the power of imagination, inspiration, and willpower. I cried when I first saw the scene in which they are laying on the train tracks, and every time they do the "You're waiting for a train..." speech, chills run down my spine. From a technical perspective, the movie has great cinematography, perfect writing, amazing visual effects, near-perfect acting, perfect casting, and a great, minimalist score. People may say this movie is overrated, but I can't argue with the feelings that I get from it. | 2 | | Opeth Damnation
Crash-This was another life-changing experience for me. I'm sure I'll get flamed for being Christian and having faith in God and fate, but honestly I could care less. At the time when I saw this movie, I was at a point in my life where I was losing faith in God, fate, life, and humanity in general. This movie changed all of that for me, and I became a much happier, more faithful, and better person because of it. Now, whenever I am feeling down or losing faith, I put this in and realize that things are going to be okay. On a side note, the music is excellent in this movie as it strikes the perfect emotional chords throughout. As with "Inception" nearly every technical aspect of this movie is perfect. This is another movie that is "overrated", but again, it gave me a feeling that I have never experienced from a movie before in my life: hope. | 3 | | The Number Twelve Looks Like You Worse Than Alone
Donnie Darko-I bought this movie on a whim out of one of those $5.00 bins at Wal-Mart, and it was one of the greatest $5.00 purchases I have ever made. I won't go on about this movie because it essentially made me feel the same way "Crash" did, though with the added dimension of destiny as it relates to love. The religious undertones/overtones add so much to the movie as well. I have yet to see the director's cut because I have heard so many bad things about it and am scared that it will ruin the movie for me. Technically, this movie isn't nearly as good as the top two on my list, but the direction, story, and music are great. Some of the acting can be a bit awkward at times, the narrative can be confusing as you watch it, which can be frustrating to some, and much of the movie is ambiguous. A great aspect of the movie is its dark sense of humor. | 4 | | Kvelertak Kvelertak
Fight Club-This movie is excellent technically with perfect acting on the parts of nearly everyone involved, though especially Helena Bonham Carter, Brad Pitt, and Edward Norton in the lead roles. The cinematography is awesome, the writing and adaptation from the Chuck Palahniuk novel of the same name is great (though of course the book is better). The dark, black humor tone is amusing as well as foreboding. The anti-consumerist message that hits you with all the subtlety of a drunk semi driver has all the gravity that it should. The only reason that such a technically excellent movie is ranked so low is the fact that it didn't make me feel as much as the top three movies on my list did. | 5 | | Periphery Icarus EP
Pulp Fiction-This is another technically awesome movie, this time from my favorite director, Quentin Tarantino. Unfortunately, it is so lowly ranked because, like "Fight Club" it didn't give me anything to take away from it. It is one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen, however. This movie is exactly my humor from beginning to end: black as the night. Some of my friends give me shocked looks when I burst into laughter at some of the most violent scenes in the movie, but Quentin presents them in such a humorous context, I can't understand how anyone wouldn't find them funny. Obviously, with Quentin at the helm, the writing, direction, cinematography, production, and casting are pitch perfect. This movie is a modern classic, and, along with "Jackie Brown" are the only two of Tarantino's movies that I have yet to get on Blu-Ray (release them already, damn it). | |
